Stories about Response (2,349)

I'm coming out

I want to share how I grew up because I want people to know so that, it would be beneficial to all of them. As an elder son I had a lot of responsibilities and unexpected burdens. Being an MSM this had doubled. I did not have the skills to handle them or address them. At that stage with my orientation, I took sex work as my profession. My sexuality and profession exposed to my friends and I saw their hardships, the exploitation and violence by local thugs, clients and the Police men. I also met… Continue

I am a Supermodel!

We were organizing young people as Peer Educators in urban poor communities in Metro Manila as part of the PRRM HIV/AIDS Prevention Project. At some point, we wanted to measure how far they have achieved in terms of peer education work. The challenge was to create an assessment tool that would be highly appropriate among gang members, young girls, young MSMs and sex workers. It was agreed that the tool would be self-defined, meaning the indicators for progress would come from our young… Continue

Sustained action in PNG after projects come to an end

This is Regina from Genoka settlement in Goroka, Papua New Guinea. Genoka is one of the most notorious settlements in the country. No NGO has entered before, mainly due to safety concerns. Only occasional volunteers distribute condoms. Genoka is now one of the exemplary communities striving for AIDS Competence. Former criminals turned into community facilitators, people take action on their concerns and Regina is making ‘bilungs’ (woven bags) and hats… Continue

Starfish at Indonesia:

Weeks ago Laurence has sent us a format to update the status of National Facilitation Team (NFT) at Indonesia. What is the name of the NFT? How many members, how big it is? So on and so forth. This blog hopes and intents to reply her questions.

Formally ACP has put its first foot print in Indonesia in 2006. I believe long before that knowingly or unknowingly Indonesians were practicing SALT in their day to day lives. UNFPA embarked… Continue

It's difficult to understand when it is just said and written, we all need to see it "in loco"

More than what I expected happened in a few days visit to some communities in Maputo (south of Mozambique - capital), Manica and Sofala (Central Region). A team of the ACP coachers and some of the Mozambique facilitation team plus me (of course not yet trained) paid a visit to some of Disabled people organizations implementing the ACP and some that are not.

On my first thought would have been a kind of refreshing training by the constellation coachers to the national team in an… Continue

PHA CAN WORK IN COMPANY WITHOUT WORRY TO BE FIRED

One of the workers of a botling company at Surabaya was detected as HIV positive two years ago. Soon after the case detected an Executive briefing was initiated by NGO, Mulia Abadi Foundation in collaboration with human and resource development of that company. During the briefing, basic information of HIV/AIDS, the ILO code, national as well as regional regulation regarding HIV/AIDS had been discussed.

Now I am a confident Woman - Happy Women's Day

Dear Forum

Happy Women's Day

Women are more vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. It is scientifically proved that HIV is transmitted 8 times more efficiently from men to women than from women to men.

I am a 22 years old; I got married at 19 years old with a truck driver. We had good relations for six months. After that he passed away with severe symptoms of AIDS and it’s transmitted to me. What I have to do now? I am a 22 years old and I am a HIV positive? I am a Young… Continue

Continue

KITCHEN GARDEN

COMMUNITY STRENGTH

Kitchen Garden

During our last Salt visit to Agai Community we were impressed by the strengths the community has. In most cases when we go out for such visits we assume the community will ask for handouts from us. This is not the case in that community.

From one of our community conversations 1 support group of PLWA’s had a story to share with us and others across the country and the world. The story of the Kitchen Garden. The group has… Continue

The Power Of Transgenders In Jakarta

Background

If we talking about youth, its not limited only in common youth that separated into two differences based on sex, which are female youth and male youth. CONCERVONS TOUJOURS NOTRE PHILOSOPHIE : Concertation Yolo

« Tout changement de mentalité a toujours été difficile. Il ne s’opère pas du jour au lendemain mais avec un peu de volonté et de persévérance, on y arrive toujours »

Il y a environ deux années aujourd’hui, quelques ONG, écoles, associations et autres organisations à assises communautaires de la commune de Yolo dans la ville de Kinshasa se sont décidées, grâce au Salt, de créer une concertation des structures pour la compétence face au sida. Elles se rencontrent tous les premiers… Continue

I am a last wicket but need some more Runs - A Granny

Dear Forum,

The HIV/AIDS pandemic in India is making the children and aged more vulnerable with middle generation succumbing to AIDS. Hence this has a long-term impact on national and state economic scenario. The current challenge for the nation is “Orphaning” of the children where the 55% grannies are taking care of them. The emotional bond between the grannies and grand children is making them mutually dependent and supportive.

Herewith i am adding the few of the voices… Continue

The Caribbean Context

Sun, sea, sand, hospitable people, a tourist's paradise...That's only part of the story. The other part is of a region uncomfortable with open discussion on sexuality. This has made grasping HIV by the throat, rather difficult. A highly conservative region with a proliferation of religions, this Region bears the excesses permissible at Carnival time but is uncomfortable with discussion on the right to quality health care of its soi-disant hidden populations - sex workers, men who have sex with… Continue

My experience at the knowledge Fair (IKF) Chiang Mai, Thailand

I am so glad that I was able to make it to the International knowledge Fair (IKF) because it was a great eye opener for me. I used to think that I care for the community I work with. Here I learnt that I need to care for humanity. Though at intellectual level I am aware of it, I understand I need to go long way to be into it. The IKF gave me a firsthand experience to witness it in reality and to be a part of that experience.

When I reflect on my bonding with my community I see many… Continue

Red shirts prevent gay pride from taking place in Chiang Mai.

This was supposed to be the opening speech for the Chiang Mai gay pride march that was canceled by force by so called Red Shirt supporters of the ousted and exiled Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra .

The confrontation does not bode well for QGBLT rights in Thailand or the supposed rule of law as dozens of police stood by and did nothing as the gay community were intimidated by the thugs who prevented the peaceful march of community solidarity to take…
