The difference difference makes

Learning from ‘What makes us human?’

From the Introduction to ‘What makes us human?’

“(Appreciation means) that we finally stop putting people into categories and enjoy the discovery of each other’s strengths: city and slum dwellers, saints and sinners, straights and all the others, the protected and the vulnerable, natives and…

Appreciation

As a way of introducing people to Jean-Louis’ book ‘What makes us human?’ people are being recorded talking about their experience of SALT in their lives. For good or ill, Anu Sieberk recorded my contribution this morning. In it, I talk about how the idea of ‘Appreciation’ has altered my life. You can see it at…

What makes us human?

Jean-Louis’ book is now out in English. The title of the book is ‘What makes us human?’ We have used this challenging question for a long time in the Constellation and it is, indeed, a fine title for the book. I don’t know if I should say this, but what I like even more is the sub-title for the book, ‘The story of a shared dream’.

The Constellation is truly the story of a shared dream. I suspect that for each of us there was a time when we saw that what the Constellation was…

Sharing PAR field experiences book

Dear all,

I am in the process of translating a book which I am really enjoying and I would like to share it with you. It is about Participative Action Research, about co-creation of knowledge and how to learn from the process.

I think that it has a lot to do with our core beliefs in The Constellation and I am sure it might be of help for many of you who explore how research can be done from the actions we undertake.…

The Story of our Shared Dream is out!

Dear friends,

Deep inside us, we know it: it is within our powers as global citizens to make life flourish. No one else will do it. The question is how.

“What makes us human?” offers a way forward. The book tells the story of the shared dream of the Constellation, the organisation founded in 2004 to stimulate and connect local responses to AIDS.  Thousands of communities mobilize their strengths to realise their…

Notre histoire est publiée en anglais!

Chers amis

SALT visit in a Methodist clinic in Diéké, very well known for its services to surrounding communities and elsewhere.

First, with the local facilitators, during the preparatory exercise of the visit, we found it very difficult to approach the staff. "What are we going to say to the medical staff?" "They know what is right, but we are profane." Many local facilitators have little hope for the success of the visit and to speak frankly, on the way they say, "When doctors realize that our questions are for supervision, they will not listen at us."

It was in this spirit that the members of the team went…

Reinventing Vilvoorde--One Volunteer at a Time

Picture this:  14 citizens of all ages (well, not really.  Most were aged 50 and beyond) and different backgrounds and social levels in a large room of the town’s large cultural center.  14 people who committed themselves for two full days, plus one evening, of learning about Community Life Competence Practices (CLCP).  When asked what brought them there, one middle-aged lady said:  “My feet.”  Others provided more content:  Wanting to learn something new; wanting to become involved; wanting…

The path to dream building (Part 2)

“Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do.”

The Regional Confidence Project (RCP) in Liberia & Guinea is moving

Today, the Regional Confidence Project (RCP) is taking a new step with the first training day for the local facilitators from Liberia. A group of 31 local facilitators selected from 8 communities, from 4 health facilities including the referral hospital, from two district offices and from the Christian Health Association of Liberia (CHAL), have come together to learn about the SALT/CLCP in order to undertake community discussions around restoration of the confidence between…

THE POWER OF DREAMS-The path to dream building (Part 1)

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

Eleanor Roosevelt

I reached the centre for my “Card making workshop with kids” and the centre was closed. The keeper forgot to open the centre and he was unreachable. I stood outside with the five young girls and informed them that we shall wait thirty minutes and if the keeper…
