A Latent Talent: Yousuf’s Journey of Self-Discovery

Every human is born with immense potential, yet many cannot fully realize it due to a lack of opportunities. Sometimes, a few encouraging words and some motivation can awaken a person’s hidden talents. I have a story that reflects this idea.
Four months ago, Yousuf joined Bangladesh Rural Economic Development (BRED) as an intern. He completed his undergraduate and master’s degrees in International Relations from the University of Dhaka and is undoubtedly talented. When he first joined, he would come up to me and say, “Apu, please give me some work; what should I do?” He would only complete the tasks we assigned him. Gradually, as we reduced the tasks we gave him, he would simply come to the office and wait for the day to end without showing much initiative. This went on for about two months. During that time, I made it a point to regularly speak with him, trying to understand his challenges and identify his skills. I encouraged him to apply his abilities to his work.
Yousuf’s internship at BRED was initially set for three months. As that period came to an end, we were unsure whether he was ready for a permanent role. However, regular conversations using the SALT approach helped him recognize the need to apply his skills meaningfully. One day, he said to me, “Apu, I know a bit about social media. Maybe I could help to manage BRED’s Facebook page and other platforms.” I also learned that he had a good command of writing and had been involved in various volunteer activities at university, among other skills.
Later, when we visited the Asian University of Bangladesh to form a volunteer team, Yousuf volunteered himself, saying, “I have a camera and know how to take good photos. I’d like to join you.” He actively participated and supported us in all tasks during the visit, and we noticed a shift in him. He started coming up with new ideas and would work on them independently, with us assisting as needed. It was through our conversations that he realized he could achieve a lot if he wanted to. We decided then to offer him a permanent role at BRED.
Recently, Yousuf joined us on a field visit to Pabna. Though it was his first field visit, he took on an active role, effortlessly connecting with locals, talking to them, and documenting the experience through photography and videography. During this trip, we decided to cook our own meals, and Yousuf was also helpful in that task. At night, when we would sit and talk, Yousuf participated enthusiastically. We spoke often throughout the trip, building a good rapport. Through these interactions, I could help him see the depth of his potential and abilities, sparking a genuine realization within him. I saw a profound transformation in him—he now understands himself better and has a clearer view of his many talents.
In truth, if we can help awaken someone’s hidden skills and talents, there’s so much they can achieve. Yousuf is a great example of how the SALT approach, simply through meaningful conversations, can help bring out the best in someone.
