Stories about Response (2,394)

SALT visit in a Methodist clinic in Diéké, very well known for its services to surrounding communities and elsewhere.

First, with the local facilitators, during the preparatory exercise of the visit, we found it very difficult to approach the staff. "What are we going to say to the medical staff?" "They know what is right, but we are profane." Many local facilitators have little hope for the success of the visit and to speak frankly, on the way they say, "When doctors realize that our questions are for supervision, they will not listen at us."

It was in this spirit that the members of the team went…

Reinventing Vilvoorde--One Volunteer at a Time

Picture this:  14 citizens of all ages (well, not really.  Most were aged 50 and beyond) and different backgrounds and social levels in a large room of the town’s large cultural center.  14 people who committed themselves for two full days, plus one evening, of learning about Community Life Competence Practices (CLCP).  When asked what brought them there, one middle-aged lady said:  “My feet.”  Others provided more content:  Wanting to learn something new; wanting to become involved; wanting…

The path to dream building (Part 2)

“Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do.”

Pope John XXIII

As i announced the ending of the card making session i observed the girls. They…

The Regional Confidence Project (RCP) in Liberia & Guinea is moving

Today, the Regional Confidence Project (RCP) is taking a new step with the first training day for the local facilitators from Liberia. A group of 31 local facilitators selected from 8 communities, from 4 health facilities including the referral hospital, from two district offices and from the Christian Health Association of Liberia (CHAL), have come together to learn about the SALT/CLCP in order to undertake community discussions around restoration of the confidence between…

THE POWER OF DREAMS-The path to dream building (Part 1)

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

Eleanor Roosevelt

I reached the centre for my “Card making workshop with kids” and the centre was closed. The keeper forgot to open the centre and he was unreachable. I stood outside with the five young girls and informed them that we shall wait thirty minutes and if the keeper…

In Sankuru: Mobilising our own resources first

“We mobilise our own resources first” is an important principle in the community life competence process. This principle helps to ensure that a community uses its full strengths in working towards a dream, a shared vision. Members of the community mobilise all human and financial resources in their reach to achieve their own success.

I am therefore delighted about latest developments in Sankuru, RD-Congo.

Dream building for an organization

Dear all,

I facilitated a few months ago a great Dream building exercise for a 70 people organization in Singapore. The small group dreams came out extremely well.

I was cautious of hierarchies, but actually had the team leaders facilitate the various groups and share their dreams in the end. That worked well. I briefed them separately before the event took place and shared relevant questions to ask during the exercise.

Each group presented their dream on stage and…

With SALT, my kids now have a say! (on behalf of Pastor Edmond)

In October 2012 I was part of the local facilitators trained by Mr. Sangaré of the Constellation from Bamako. It was my first time hearing about this approach. At first we thought we might become experts, but in reality and in practical terms, it was very simple: SALT was rather a simple way of seeing others and a rewarding way of doing with others. At the end of the training we were required to experiment with a group of people. I decided to do it in my first grassroots community:…

On the spot improvisation of SALT with children

Before the session started Mr Autry Haynes approached me and asked what were these 5 children doing. They were the children, nephews and grandchildren under 10 years of age of the women coming for SALT and they would be spending the next one and a half hour drawing all by themselves. My Haynes suggested that along with my friend, Jessinee, we improvise a session with the children.

We started the session asking the…

A short story on local response in the UK

Last week myself and two other learners started the blended triad programme facilitated by Rituu and Claire.

In our opening session we were asked to consider the phrase "local response" and what it meant to us.

The following is a short story from my experience.

A few years back I worked as a community development officer in a coastal town in the UK. It is a…

‘Active listening’ in the family

Background: In the Systemic participatory action research project by Institute of Development Studies for Freedom Fund and Geneva Global we are using SALT with four organisations in the states of Bihar and UP in India. We have noted that facilitators from the NGOs are observing transformation in their own personal lives through SALT. Here are stories from my team mates at PGS  from UP who have started paying more attention to listening not only to the communities but also to their family…

Learning Festival’s contribution to Community to Community transfer

In marketing we learn that when a customer is satisfied, that excitement is shared with on average 6/7 persons. That happens naturally! When a community share common experiences and learn from those experiences they too would share their learning. The sharing could happen naturally or influenced. A Learning Festival is a tool allowed for conscious sharing and learning (^_^). During the Learning Festival held in Mauritius in April 2016, 30 foreigners from 13…
