Let's go to Northeastern part of my country, India. A remote, beautiful village with paddy fields, surrounded by hills- Tinkonia Part one, Bongaigaon, Assam. This is the location of my story where we are working on immunization.
For the past three months our CNES team has been doing home visits in this community. On 5th June, we gathered different sub-groups in the community to discuss what is their dream for healthy children in the village.
Then next day on 6th June about 40…

Anu Sieberk, a journalist from Estonia, who interviewed me writes:
"Mohamed Rafique is an Indian doctor and a senior citizens' care home owner. He encourages communities to dream: "We should not be shy of dreaming. Always go for the uncomfortable and the unachievable dream." When visiting communities, he has found that there is an unexpected gap between what you thought you should be looking for and what the members actually wanted to share. Rafique believes that there (in that…

4 July 2017: Ajinlal Joseph parked the vehicle in a corner of the shuttle badminton court in what he said was called New Harijan Colony in Peroor Village hardly a couple of kilometers from Ettumanoor Town. The badminton court had on its four sides a spacious Community Hall, a large Banyan tree with small idols forming a temple, a large concrete stage, a couple of…

My colleague Tutumani and I did a SALT visit to a group of people in May 2017. This is a remote village called Hatipota part 1, Mazbat block in Assam, India. The group we met included 5-6 women, one man and 4-5 children. They are daily wage workers who often get to work in tea gardens nearby.…

Local response- in the Constellation we define a local response (am citing Philip Forth from our blended learning programme)- A community can take action to deal with a challenge that it faces. These actions form a 'Local Response'. They contrast with a solution imposed on a community by experts from outside the community.Last week, Phil took us for a SALT visit in his town Ilkely, United Kingdom. Here is what I observed on the local response.
15th May…

With a view to learning from the good contribution of the Mayor and his staff for the proper use of Health Services.
The story from the meeting:
The Mayor and his executives have repeatedly said that they consider all the health structures of the commune as their properties. This is the reason why they take part in all meetings related to health and they are sometimes present at the monthly or quarterly meetings of the sub-prefectural and prefectural…

When Arthur and Edward from Health Nest Uganda (HENU) picked me up at my hotel the day after our SALT visit to Katabi (see Ubuntu on the bus) they had exciting news. Both had independently started their day with the yoga exercises I had shared with the Katabi group! This was so encouraging that we repeated these exercises during the…

Back to Molenbeek . . .
. . . This time on a smaller, but certainly not less important scale!
During one of the follow-up meetings on the Molenbeek initiative, there was a new face in the circle: Karim Azemian, a co-founder of ASBL Repère, an organization that seeks…

First, with the local facilitators, during the preparatory exercise of the visit, we found it very difficult to approach the staff. "What are we going to say to the medical staff?" "They know what is right, but we are profane." Many local facilitators have little hope for the success of the visit and to speak frankly, on the way they say, "When doctors realize that our questions are for supervision, they will not listen at us."
It was in this spirit that the members of the team went…
