হরিজন জনগোষ্ঠী আটটি কাস্টে বিভক্ত। যার কারণে এক কাস্টের লোক অন্য কাস্টের ঘরে যাওয়া-আসা বা খাওয়া-দাওয়া করে না। হরিজন জনগোষ্ঠী যেমন সমাজের বাইরে থেকে বৈষম্যের শিকার হয়, তেমনি সমাজের ভিতরেও বৈষম্যের শিকার হতে হয়। হরিজন সমাজের এই ভিতরের বৈষম্য একেবারে সমাজের গভীরে প্রোথিত। নিজেদের ভিতরে বৈষম্য থাকার কারণে তারা এখনো পিছিয়ে রয়েছে। এই কারণেই জনগোষ্ঠীর অধিকার আদায় ও উন্নয়নে বাধাগ্রস্ত হতে হচ্ছে।
