Exposure Visit Experience: Arshirbad Organisation to ECDO

We from Arshirbad Organisation went on an exposure visit to ECDO. Usually, exposure visits are designed as organisation to organisation learning exchanges, but our visit was completely different. This visit was inclusive women, men, youth, and persons with disabilities all participated together.

This exposure visit was not for evaluating, competing with, or supervising any organisation. Rather, it was an opportunity to observe different experiences and initiatives closely, to learn, and to exchange knowledge.

If I share my personal feelings, this visit touched me deeply. It reminded me of the discrimination I once faced, and how I now work to remove discrimination for others. Through this visit, the dream building goals of our Cohort were also fulfilled.

Planning the Visit

We planned to take members of our own community along with us. Since Dalit and Harijan communities function through a panchayat system, and since panchayats follow their own norms, we decided to visit a community where such a system is active.

We visited ECDO to build a network between the panchayat leaders of the Patro community and our own community leaders.

Even before we reached Sylhet, ECDO kept in touch with us regularly. Their care felt like a family relationship at no moment did it feel like we were visiting another organisation.

Arrival in Sylhet

On our first morning, the Director of ECDO personally came to our guest house to receive us and take us to their office. His respect and sincerity touched us deeply.

At the ECDO office, our community members were welcomed warmly with flowers and heartfelt greetings. We then learned about ECDO’s work through a presentation.

Visit to Daldali Community

Afterwards, we visited the Daldali community something I had been eagerly waiting for. They feel like my own people, my soul relatives. I am one of them.

We will never forget their extraordinary welcome and the unique tea leaf chutney.

Through the SALT and CLCP approaches, we observed how deeply the community takes ownership of its own development. Arshirbad and ECDO communities shared their stories with each other. I felt like I was watching a movie so beautiful and alive.

If not for this visit, I would never have understood the depth of real community life. It felt like lost families were reunited. The Daldali community speaks both Hindi and Bangla; a mixed population lives there Been, Harijan, Dalit, Munda, and other groups. Discrimination and social problems are deeply rooted in Sylhet, often in ways many people do not even know.

Lunch and Visit to Patro Community

After lunch, hosted by ECDO in a beautiful restaurant, we went to the Patro community. In Bangladesh, the Patro population numbers only three to three and a half thousand. They have their own language, culture, and traditions.

We first met a young woman inspired by SALT conversations. She has started working for children’s education in her community. One powerful learning from her deeply touched me:

When she saw that children were not focusing on study, she talked with them and tried to understand what they actually loved doing. They said they loved art. So she began teaching them art.

That is the beauty of SALT unlike other theories where we impose our own ideas on children. SALT is like a microscope that helps us see the desires and strengths inside a person.

We visited another Patro group where the community is preserving their language through songs using SALT and CLCP. Women there are organised and open to learning and teaching.

I truly salute the panchayat leader there. If I had not visited myself, I would never have believed how supportive he is toward women’s empowerment. The panchayat leaders of both communities felt inspired by each other something they shared during the AER session.

After gathering many experiences and receiving immense love, we returned to the guest house. Everyone went to their rooms to freshen up.

AER Session

Then we began the AER session. Everyone spoke openly sharing their feelings and learning. No one remained silent.

Time flew it was already 9:30 PM. The session ended and everyone went to their rooms.

But I stayed back with many thoughts, emotions, and questions. Tears gathered in the corner of my eyes not from pain or discrimination but from joy and honour. I felt proud that I could give the same respect and love to my community members that I once wished for myself.

A Painful Memory From the Past

I must share something personal. Once, I went to another organisation for training. I asked their management where we would stay at night. Smiling, someone told me, “Hotel Radisson.” I was so happy. I had seen that hotel before in Dhaka beautiful and international.

But at the end of the day, when I asked when we would go to the hotel, he laughed again and said:
“Hotel Radisson? Do you think you deserve to stay there?”
He said it mockingly, with the same smile I can never forget.

He told us to stay near the Mahakhali rail line in cheap hotels because they “had no budget.” Three of us stayed in one small room. Safety was questionable. I cried the entire night.

Was my fault that I am Dalit? Or that I am poor?

That night I made a promise to myself:
If God ever gives me a chance, I will never discriminate against anyone.

Later, I was honoured by GFC when Ritu and Nawaz bhai arranged proper accommodation for me. Again, during the South Asia Convening, we all stayed together there was no difference based on religion, caste, wealth, or anything.

This is GFC. This is what makes GFC donors and representatives truly special something gifted by God.

Another beautiful aspect of GFC is the flexible fund. Flexibility builds deep trust. Without it, we would have been forced to follow rigid budgets and would have ended up doing a very small, symbolic exposure visit possibly with inequality.

Remembering my own painful experiences, I made sure every community leader and person who travelled with us received utmost respect same accommodation, same meals, same care. ECDO also treated our people with the same dignity.

They returned to their community and shared their learnings and stories with everyone. For this, I am grateful to GFC.

Departure and Another Painful Reminder

The visit ended and the next day we planned to return, but everyone requested to visit the Srimangal tea gardens. Since we were already there, we agreed.

Then another memory struck me. My younger sister lives in Sylhet. But since I married into a “lower caste,” her mother-in-law instructed that I should not visit their home.

I was in Sylhet, in the same city as my sister, but I could not go to her house only because of caste.

When will society free itself from this discrimination?
Schools, roads, latrines, economic development yes, these are important.

But have we ever thought about how to change the heart of a human being?

I have thought about it because I am a survivor.
And I have found the answer: SALT and CLCP.
Everything can change, but unless the human heart changes, nothing truly changes.

That is why I have decided whenever possible, I will go to every marginalised group in Bangladesh with SALT and CLCP.

With all these experiences, learnings, and stories, we returned to our home in Mymensingh, to Arshirbad Organisation.

If possible, I will go again from one horizon to the next.

Arshirbad Organisation থেকে আমরা ECDO সংস্থায় এক্সপোজার ভিজিট এ যাই। সাধারণত এক্সপোজার ভিজিট সংস্থা টু সংস্থা যেভাবে হয় , এই ভিজিট সে রকম ছিলো না। এই ভিজিট ছিলো সকলের অংশগ্রহণে অন্তর্ভূক্ত, নারী, পুরুষ, ইয়ুথ, প্রতিবন্ধী ব্যক্তি। আমাদের এই এক্সপোজার ভিজিটটি কোনো সংস্থাকে মূল্যায়ন, প্রতিযোগিতা বা তদারকি করার জন্য নয়। বরং বিভিন্ন অভিজ্ঞতা, উদ্যোগ ও শেখার বিষয়গুলো কাছ থেকে দেখার এবং পারস্পরিক জ্ঞান বিনিময়ের একটি সুযোগ ছিল। আমি যদি আমার ব্যক্তিগত অভিমত প্রকাশ করি তাহলে এখানে আমার ইমোশন ছিলো কিভাবে আমার সাথে হ‌ওয়া বৈষম্য আমি অন্যের প্রতি বৈষম্য দূরীকরণ কাজ করেছি। এছাড়াও এই ভিজিট এর মাধ্যমে আমাদের Cohort এর ড্রীম বিল্ডিং পূরন হয়েছে । এবার ভিজিট প্রসঙ্গে বলি। প্রথমে আমরা পরিকল্পনা করি , আমাদের কমিউনিটির লোকদের নিয়ে এক্সপোজার ভিজিট এ যাবো। যেহেতু দলিত ও হরিজন কমিউনিটি পঞ্চায়েত ব্যবস্থায় পরিচালনা হয়। পঞ্চায়েতের নিজস্ব নিয়ম-কানুন আছে তাই এমন একটি কমিউনিটিতে যাবো যেখানে পঞ্চায়েত ব্যস্ততা আছে। আমরা ECDO পাত্র কমিউনিটির পঞ্চায়েত লিডারদের সাথে আমাদের কমিউনিটি লিডারদের একটা নেটওয়ার্ক তৈরি করার উদ্দেশ্যে ECDO তে গেলাম। সিলেট পৌঁছানোর আগে থেকেই তারা আমাদের নিয়মিত খোঁজখবর নিতে শুরু করেছেন। এটা সাধারণত একটা পারিবারিক সম্পর্কে ক্ষেত্রে হয়। কোনভাবেই মনে হয়নি আমরা অন্য একটি সংস্থায় যাচ্ছি। সিলেটে আমাদের প্রথম সকাল। ECDO পরিচালক আমাদের রিসিভ করে অফিসে নিয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য হাজির হোন আমাদের গেস্ট হাউজের সামনে। খুবই আন্তরিকতা ও সম্মানের সহিত আমাদের নিয়ে যায় ECDO অফিসে। সেখানে ফুলের অভ্যর্থনা সহিত আমাদের কমিউনিটির সকলকে স্বাগতম জানানো হয়। আমরা ECDO সংস্থার কাজ সম্পর্কে একটি প্রেজেন্টেশনের মাধ্যমে ধারণা নেই। তারপর দলদলি কমিউনিটিতে যাই। যেখানে যাওয়ার জন্য আমার মন ও প্রাণ ব্যাকুল হয়েছিল। ওরা তো আমার আত্মার আত্মীয়। সত্যিই ওরা আমার আপনজন। আমি ওদের‌ই একজন। দলদলি চা বাগানের অসাধারণ স্বাগতম ও চা পাতা তৈরি ভর্তা আমরা কোনদিন ও ভুলবনা। এর পর SALT ও CLCP এপ্রোচ এর মাধ্যমে কমিউনিটি কিভাবে ওনারশীপ নিচ্ছে তা সত্যিই প্রশংসনীয়। আশির্বাদ কমিউনিটি ও ECDO কমিউনিটি একে অপরের কমিউনিটির গল্প গুলো ভাগাভাগি করে নিচ্ছিলো। আমি অবাক হয়ে দেখছিলাম ও ভাবছি কোন সিনেমা দেখছি। তবে কমিউনিটিতে যে জীবন থাকে তা এই ভিজিট না হলে এত গভীরভাবে অনুধাবন করতে পারতাম না। মনে হয় হারিয়ে যাওয়া কিছু মানুষের মিলন ঘটলো এই ভিজিট এর মাধ্যমে। কারন দলদলি কমিউনিটি মানুষ হিন্দি ও বাংলাতে কথা বলে। এখানে মিক্সড সম্প্রদায়ের বসবাস। সিলেটে রয়েছে বীন, হরিজন, দলিত,মুন্ডা, জনগোষ্ঠী। এখানে বৈষম্য ও সামাজিক সমস্যা একেবারে গভীরে মূল এ আঁকড়ে আছে। অনেকে হয়তো জানেই না এদের সমস্যা কত প্রকার ও কি কি। শুধু চা শ্রমিক হিসেবে অর্থনৈতিক সমস্যাটা চিহ্নিত করা সহজ হয়। এরপর দুপুরে খাবার যা আমাদের সৌজন্যে ECDO আয়োজন করে সুন্দর একটি রেস্টুরেন্টে। সেখান থেকে খাবার শেষ করে আমরা চলে যাই পাত্র কমিউনিটিতে। বাংলাদেশে পাত্র জনগোষ্ঠী তিন থেকে সাড়ে তিন হাজার। তাদের রয়েছে নিজস্ব ভাষা কৃষ্টি ও কালচার। আমরা প্রথমে এখন একটি ইয়ুথ মেয়ে সাথে স্বাক্ষাত করি , যিনি SALT কনভারশেশনের মাধ্যমে উৎসাহিত হয়ে নিজের সমাজের শিশুদের শিক্ষার জন্য কাজ করছেন। শুধু তাই না এখানে একটা গভীর শিক্ষনীয় বিষয় ছিলো যেটি আমাকে আরেকবার ভাবিয়েছে। মেয়েটি যখন দেখলো ছোট ছেলেমেয়েদের পড়ার প্রতি মনোযোগ কম তখন তাদের সাথে গ্রুপে আলোচনা করে ওরা কি করতে পছন্দ করে ওটা চিহ্নিত করলো। ছোট ছোট ওই ছেলেমেয়েরা আর্ট করতে পছন্দ করে। তখন ওদের আর্ট শিখানো শুরু করলো। একটাই SALT এর গুন আর অন্য থ্রিওরি থেকে আলাদা। আমরা সাধারণত কি করি নিজের চিন্তা শিশুদের উপর চাপিয়ে দেই। আমরা মনে করি আমরা ভালো জানি। তবে SALT হচ্ছে সেই অনুবিক্ষন যন্ত্র যা দিয়ে মানুষের মনের ইচ্ছা জানা যায় ও তার ভিতরে শক্তি কাজে লাগানো যায়। আমরা পাত্র কমিউনিটি আরেকটি দল ভিজিট করি যেখানে SALT ও CLCP এপ্রোচ এ কমিউনিটি কিভাবে গানের মাধ্যমে নিজেদের ভাষা সংরক্ষণ করছে। যা সত্যিই প্রশংসনীয়। সেখানের নারীরা সংগঠিত। তারা শিখতে ও শিখাতে উন্মুক্ত। সেখানে পঞ্চায়েত লিডারের প্রতি আমার কুর্নিশ। পঞ্চায়েত কিভাবে নারীদের সহযোগিতা করছে এগিয়ে যেতে আমি সেখানে না গেলে বিশ্বাস করতাম না। কমিউনিটি পঞ্চায়েত লিডারা একে অপরের কাছ থেকে অনেক অনুপ্রাণিত হয়েছেন। যা তারা ভিজিট পরবর্তীAER বলেছেন। অনেক অভিজ্ঞতা, ভালোবাসা নিয়ে কমিউনিটি থেকে ফেরত আসলাম গেস্ট হাউস। সবাই ফ্রেশ হতে রুমে চলে গেলো। এর পর শুরু হলো AER সকলে তাদের মনের কথা,লানিং, শেয়ারিং করলো। কেউ আর চুপ নেই। অনেক সময় হলো রাত ৯.৩০ । এখানে শেষ করতে হলো। সবাই আবার নিজেদের রুমে চলে গেলো আরাম করার জন্য। আমি বসে র‌ইলাম অনেক প্রশ্ন, আবেগ আর ভাবনা নিয়ে। চোখের এক কোণে জল উঁকি দিয়ে বলছে এটা কোন কষ্টের জল না , না কোন বৈষম্যের। এটা অনেক আনন্দের ও সম্মানের। যেই সম্মান ও ভালোবাসা আমি আমার সাথে নিয়ে আসা কমিউনিটির লোকদের আজ দিয়েছি। শুরুতেই বলেছিলাম না এখানে আমার আবেগ কাজ করছে। এখন বলতে বিন্দুমাত্র লজ্জা বা কষ্ট নেই। আমি যখন অন্য একটি সংস্থাতে একটা প্রশিক্ষণের জন্য গিয়েছিলাম তখন আমি সেখানকার মেনেজমেন্ট কে জিজ্ঞেস করেছিলাম আমরা রাতে কোথায় থাকবো, মেনেজমেন্টর একজন হাসিমুখে বললেন হোটেল রেডিসন। আমি অনেক খুশি। কারন অমি যখন ঢাকায় আসছিলাম হোটেল রেডিসন দেখেছি। এটা ইন্টারন্যাশনাল। অনেক সুন্দর। সারাদিন প্রশিক্ষণের ফাঁকে আমার হোটেল এর কথা মনে হচ্ছিলো। আমি আমার সাথে থাকা অন্য মেয়েদের বলছি আজকে হোটেল রেডিসন এ থাকবো। প্রশিক্ষণ শেষে যখন আমি জানতে চাইলাম আমরা কখন হোটেলে যাবো তখন তিনি আবার হেসে বললেন কোথায় থাকবেন হোটেল রেডিসন। আপনি কি এখানে থাকার যোগ্যতা রাখেন। অনেকটা নেগলেট করে বললো। তাও আবার হাসতে হাসতে। যে হাসি এখনও আমার চোখের সামনে ভেসে উঠে। যান মহাখালী রেললাইন এর পাশে কিছু হোটেল আছে থাকেন । কম দামে। আমাদের বাজেট নাই। ছোট একটা রুমে আমরা তিনজন। নিরাপত্তা এটা প্রশ্ন বোধক? তবে আমার সেই দিনের কান্না আমি সারারাত থামাতে পারিনি। আমার দোষ কোথায় আমি দলিত, নাকি আমি গরিব। তবে আমি মনে মনে প্রতিজ্ঞা নিয়েছিলাম ঈশ্বর যদি কোনদিন সুযোগ দেয় আমি কখনো কারো সাথে বৈষম্যমূলক আচরণ করবো না। আমি সম্মানিত হয়েছিলাম GFC থেকে, যখন রিতু ও ন‌ওয়াজভাই আমাকে প্রথম একটা হোটেলে রাখলেন। আবার যখন দ্বিতীয়বার সাউথ এশিয়া কনভেনিং এ সবাই একসাথে থাকলাম। এখানে কে কোন ধর্মের কোন কাস্টের কে ধনী গরীব কিছুই ছিলো না। ছিলো একটা মিলন মেলা। এটাই GFC. এটাই GFC ডোনার, ডোনার প্রতিনিধি স্পেশাল গুন। যা ঈশ্বর থেকে প্রদত্ত। GFC আরেকটি ভালো দিক হচ্ছে ফ্লেক্সিবল ফান্ড। এখানে বিশ্বস্ততা রন্ধ্রে রন্ধ্রে মিশে আছে। আমরা যদি ফ্লেক্সিবল ফান্ড না পেতাম তাহলে আমাদের ও ডোনারদের চাহিদা মোতাবেক বাজেট করতে হতো কিংবা এমন বাজেট হতো যেটা দিয়ে আমরা এক্সপোজার ভিজিট নামমাত্র করতাম। এখানে কিছুটা বৈষম্য হতেই পারতো। তবে আমি আমার জীবনের ঘটে যাওয়া ঘটনার কথা মনে রেখে আমার কমিউনিটি লিডাদের ও যারা আমাদের সাথে গিয়েছিলেন তাঁদের সর্বোচ্চ সম্মান দিয়েছি। একসাথে এক‌ই গেস্ট হাউজে থাকা খাওয়া-দাওয়া সবকিছু। ECDO থেকেও একই ব্যবহার পেয়েছে আমাদের কমিউনিটি লোকরা। তারা তাদের কমিউনিটিতে এসে এই ভিজিটের লানিং শেয়ারিং এ গল্প ছড়িয়ে দিয়েছে সকলের মাঝে। এটার জন্য GFC প্রতি ও কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করছি। আমাদের ভিজিট শেষ এখন পরেরদিন চলে আসা। সকলের অনুরোধে আমরা শ্রীমঙ্গল চা বাগান হয়ে আসবো। এতদূর এসেছি। আরেকটি বৈষম্য মূলক কথা মনে পড়ে গেলো আমার ছোট বোনের বিয়ে হয়েছে সিলেট। কিন্তু আমি ছোট কাস্ট বিয়ে করেছি । তাই আমার বোনের শাশুড়ি বলেছে আমি যেন তাদের বাসায় না যাই। সিলেট আছি । এই শহরে আমার বোন। শুধুমাত্র কাস্ট এর কারণে আমার বোনের বাসায় যেতে পারবো না। সমাজের এই বৈষম্য কবে কিভাবে দূর হবে? ভেবেছেন। স্কুল করে দিবেন, রাস্তা করে দিবেন, ল্যাটিন দিবেন সব দিবেন। অর্থনৈতিক পরিবর্তন আনবেন। ভালো কথা, মানুষের ভিতরের পরিবর্তন কি দিয়ে করবেন একবার ও ভেবেছেন। আমি তো ভেবেছি, পেয়েছি, কারন আমি ভুক্তভোগী। তাই আমি SALT ও CLCP এপ্রোচ নিয়ে এত উৎসাহি। সব পরিবর্তন হয়ে গেলো। মানুষের মন পরিবর্তন না হলে লাভ কি? তাই আমি সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছি সুযোগ ও সময় হলে বাংলাদেশের সব পিছিয়ে পড়া মানুষের কাছে হাজির হবো SALT ও CLCP এপ্রোচ নিয়ে। এই যাত্রায় অনেক অভিজ্ঞতা লানিং শেয়ারিং নিয়ে চলে আসলাম ময়মনসিংহ নিজ জায়গায় আশির্বাদ সংস্থায়। সুযোগ হলে আবার যাবো দিক থেকে দিগন্তে ।
