ব্যাসপুর দক্ষিণপাড়াতে যাই মা অভিভাবকদের সাথে তাদের বাচ্চাদের পড়াশোনা বিষয়ে খবরা খবর আনতে। তার আগে প্রথমে আমি একটু বলে নেই তাদের সাথে সল্টের শুরুতে তাদের যে পরিস্থিতি ছিল। গল্প করার সময় তারা বলেছিল সন্তানদের মঙ্গল কামনা তারা সর্বদা করেন। তবে কোমলমতি শিশুরা পড়াশোনা করে কিনা, কোথায় যায়, কাদের সাথে মিশে খেলাধুলা করে এ নিয়ে তাদের কোন মাথা ব্যথা ছিল না। একক সল্টের মাধ্যমে তাদের কিছুটা অনুপ্রাণিত করা গেলেও গ্রুপ সল্ট এর মাধ্যমে তাদেরকে অনেক বেশি অনুপ্রাণিত করতে সক্ষম হই। তারপর থেকে তারা নিতে শুরু করে বিভিন্ন ধরনের পরিকল্পনা ও তার উপর কাজ। তারা নিজেরা মিলে মৌসুমিকে টিউটর হিসেবে খুজে নেয় পড়াশুনা করানোর জন্য, কারণ এলাকায় ভালো শিক্ষকের অভাব। নিয়মিত বাচ্চাদের সেখানে পাঠানোর দায়িত্ব নিজেরাই নেয়। মায়েরা মিলে সন্তানদের বিষয়ে আলোচনা করে। যে যখন পারে মৌসুমীর বাড়িতে গিয়ে বাচ্চাদের খবরা খবর আনে। আমরাও মাঝেমধ্যে মৌসুমী এবং অভিভাবকদের কাছে গিয়ে তাদের বাচ্চাদের কতটা উন্নতি হচ্ছে সে বিষয়ে দুই পক্ষের সাথেই আলাপচারিতা করি।
তবে অত্যন্ত আশ্চর্যের বিষয় হলো অভিভাবকরা নিজেরা মিলে এতটাই সচেতন হয়েছে যে তাদের সন্তানেরা ঠিকমতো লেখাপড়া করছে কিনা বা কতটা শিখছে সেটাও এখন তারা পরিমাপ করা শিখে গেছে। যেহেতু সামনে মৌসুমির এসেসসি পরীক্ষা, সে এখন একটু কম সময় দিতে পারে বাচ্চাদের। তাই চলতি বছরের শুরু থেকে তারা মৌসুমীর থেকে ভালো গৃহশিক্ষক খোঁজা শুরু করে এবং পেয়েও গিয়েছে তারা। লক্ষ্য বা উদ্দেশ্য তাদের একটাই ছেলেমেয়েদেরকে সুশিক্ষায় শিক্ষিত করা। আগের পরিস্থিতিতে তারা হয়তো বলতো, মৌসুমির পরিক্ষা, পড়াবে না, এখন আমরা কি করবো। কিন্তু তারা নিজেরা সমাস্যা সমাধান করে ফেলেছেন।
এই যে তাদের মধ্যে মনের পরিবর্তন, চিন্তাভাবনার পরিবর্তন তা আসলে সংখ্যার হিসেবে পরিমাপ করা কঠিন। কিন্তু এই পরিবর্তনের গুরুত্ব অপরিসীম। যা নতুন প্রজন্মকে আলো দেখাতে বিরাট বড় ভূমিকা রাখবে বলে আশা করি। আজকের অভিভাবকদের সাথে গল্প করে আমি তাদের মধ্যে এই আমূল পরিবর্তন লক্ষ্য করেছি যেটা আমাকে অনুপ্রাণিত করেছে। এখন তারা আগের থেকে অনেক বেশি সচেতন হয়ে উঠেছে ফোনও খুব সতর্কতার সাথে নিজেরা ব্যবহার করছে যাতে করে তাদের সন্তানেরা মোবাইল ফোন থেকে দূরে থাকতে পারে। সকালে আরবি শিক্ষা তথা মক্তবে যাওয়া এবং বাংলা প্রাইভেট পড়া। তারপর ১১ টার মধ্যেই স্কুলে যাওয়ার জন্য তৈরি হওয়া এবং ১২টার মধ্যে স্কুলে চলে যাওয়া। ১২-৪:১৫ পর্যন্ত ওই স্কুলে অবস্থান করা। এবং তারপর তাদের সন্তানদেরকে খেলার সুযোগ ও তৈরি করে দিয়েছেন অভিভাবকরা বাড়ির আঙিনায় তারা খেলাধুলা করছে খুব স্বাচ্ছন্দে। এই যে একটা নিয়ম শৃঙ্খলের মধ্যে বাচ্চাদেরকে এনে এখন তারা অনেকটাই স্বস্তিবোধ করছে। প্রায় ২-২.৫ ঘন্টা ফোনের ব্যবহার তারা কমিয়ে এনেছে। অনেক অভিভাবক বলেছেন তাদের সন্তান এখন ফোন খুব একটা ধরার সময় পায় না। এবং তাদের কোমলমতি মুখে ও আমরা গিয়ে অনেক হাসি খুঁজে পেয়েছি কেননা তারা এখন খেলাধুলায় খুব মনোযোগী, লেখাপড়ায় খুব মনোযোগী। নিয়মিত তাদের বাড়িতে আমাদের যাওয়া আসার কারণে খুশি আপার একটি ছেলে স্কুল থেকে ঝরে পড়েছিল তবুও তাকে মাঝেমধ্যেই আমাদের কাছে এনে বসাতো এবং আমাদের কথাগুলো শুনাতো। খুশি আপার ছেলে তাওহীদ বাজে সঙ্গ এবং ধূমপানের সাথে আসক্ত হয়ে পড়েছিল। আমরা তাকে বিভিন্নভাবে পড়ালেখার গুরুত্ব সম্পর্কে বোঝাতে চেষ্টা করেছি। অত্যন্ত আনন্দের বিষয় হলো যে গত তিন দিন আগে আমরা যখন তাদের বাড়িতে আবারো যাই তাওহীদ নিজে এসে আমাদেরকে সেচ্ছায় বলে সে পড়ালেখায় ফিরে এসেছে। তার এই পরিবর্তন গোটা পাড়ার উপর একটা প্রভাব ফেলেছে। তাই এখন অন্যান্য মায়েরাও অধিক সচেতন হয়ে উঠেছে সন্তানদের পড়ালেখা চালু রাখার ব্যাপারে অর্থাৎ সল্ট যে এত সুন্দর ভাবে কাজ দিয়েছে, যা হয়তো আমি লিখে বোঝাতে সক্ষম হবো না। ঐ পাড়াতে গেলে তবেই বোঝা যায়। আমাদের দেখলে তাদের কথা বলার উৎসাহ দেখে বুঝি তারা হৃদয় থেকে অনুধাবন করেছে নিজেদের সচেতনা তাদের সন্তানদের কিভাবে উপকৃত করছে যার কারণে আরো অনেকে সচেতন হয়ে উঠছেন। শুধু তারাই না, যেহেতু অন্যরা দেখছেন যে অভিভাবকেরা আগের চেয়ে বেশি তৎপর, তাই অনেকে নতুনভাবে এলাকায় বাড়িতে বড়িতে পড়ানো শুরু করেছে। তাই আগে যে সবাই বলতো শিক্ষক নাই আর এখন ব্যাপারটা হয়ে দাড়িয়েছে, কোন শিক্ষক বেশি ভালো। এমনকি এই পাড়ায় “আশা” নামক এক এনজিও বাচ্চাদের পড়াশুনা করাতো। কিন্তু আসলে সেখানে কোন পড়ালেখা হতো না। অভিভাবকদের এই আমূল পরিবর্তনে এই “আশা” এনজিও ও আবার ভালোভাবে পড়ানো শুরু করেছে কারন এখন অভিভাবকেরা নিজেরাই শিক্ষক খুঁজছেন, খোঁজ খবর রাখছেন।
সার কথা হলো দৃশ্যমান পরিবর্তন (রাস্তা, ঘাট, সেতু) করাটা অত্যন্ত সহজ কিন্তু এ অদৃশ্য অথচ মনের পরিবর্তন আনাটা অত্যন্ত দুরূহ এবং কষ্টসাধ্য যেটা আমরা একমাত্র সল্ট এর মাধ্যমে অনেক সহজেই করতে পেরেছি। এবং কথায় আছে, “আমাকে একজন শিক্ষিত মা দাও, আমি তোমাদের একটি শিক্ষিত জাতি দিবো”। সল্ট আমাদের মায়েদের মনকে শিক্ষিত করে তুলছে। হয়তো তাদের অক্ষর জ্ঞান নেই, কিন্তু তারা বুঝতে শুরু করেছে, কিভাবে স্বশিক্ষিত মায়ের মতো করে সন্তানকে বড় করে তুলতে হবে।

I went to Baspur Dakkhinpara to meet the parents and gather information about their children's education. Before that, I would like to share a little about the situation at the beginning of the Salt conversation. When we started talking, the parents mentioned that they always wished the best for their children. However, they never really paid attention to whether their children were studying properly, where they were going, or who they were mingling with while playing. While they were somewhat inspired through individual Salt conversations, it was through the group Salt sessions that we were able to inspire them much more. From that point onward, they began making plans and taking action.
They collectively found a tutor named Mousumi to help their children with their studies, as there was a shortage of good teachers in the area. They took it upon themselves to ensure the children attended tutoring sessions regularly. The mothers gathered and discussed their children's progress. Whenever possible, one of them would go to Mousumi's house to check on the children's progress. We also occasionally visited Mousumi and the parents to discuss how much progress their children had made.
What was really surprising was that the parents themselves became so aware that they even learned to assess whether their children were studying properly or how much they had learned. Since Mousumi is preparing for her SSC exams, she can not give as much time to the children, so at the beginning of this year, they started searching for a better tutor for their children and found one. Their goal is simple: to provide their children with a good education. In the past, they might have said, "Mousumi's exam, she won't be able to teach, what will we do now?" But now, they have solved the problem themselves.
The mental shift and change in thinking within them is difficult to quantify, but the importance of this change is immense. I believe this change will play a significant role in guiding the new generation. After talking with the parents today, I noticed this profound change, which inspired me. They are now much more aware and cautious about their phone usage, so that their children stay away from mobile phones. In the mornings, the children go for Arabic lessons and to the local madrasa, then attend private Bangla lessons. By 11 am, they prepare for school and leave by 12 pm. They stay in school until 4:15 pm. Afterward, the parents have created opportunities for the children to play in the courtyard of their homes.
This routine has brought a sense of calm and structure to their lives. They have reduced their phone usage by almost 2 to 2.5 hours. Many parents mentioned that their children no longer have much time to use their phones. We also noticed many smiles on the children's faces because they are now very focused on their studies and play. Due to our regular visits to their homes, Khushi Apa's son, who had previously dropped out of school, is now attending school again.
Khushi Apa's son, Tawhid, had fallen into bad company and became addicted to smoking. We tried to explain to him the importance of education in various ways. The great news is that just three days ago, when we visited their home, Tawhid came to us voluntarily and told us that he had returned to his studies. His transformation has had a significant impact on the entire neighborhood. As a result, other parents have also become more aware and are keeping their children engaged in their studies.
The Salt has worked so beautifully that it's almost impossible to describe in words. When you visit the area, you truly understand how the parents have internalized their awareness and realized how it benefits their children. Because of this, many others are becoming more aware too. Not only that, but since other parents see that the guardians have become more proactive, many have started teaching children at home.
Previously, everyone used to complain that there were no teachers, but now the conversation has shifted to finding the best teachers. Even an NGO named "Asha" used to try to teach the children, but nothing significant was happening there. However, with this profound change in the parents, "Asha" has started providing better education because the parents are actively searching for teachers and staying informed.
In summary, making visible changes (such as roads, bridges, etc.) is quite easy, but bringing about invisible changes in the heart and mind is extremely difficult and challenging. However, through Salt, we have been able to achieve this with relative ease. As the saying goes, "Give me an educated mother, and I will give you an educated nation." Salt is educating the hearts and minds of our mothers. They may not be literate, but they have begun to understand how to raise their children like self-educated mothers.
