আমাদের হিজলিপাড়ার আপারা এবং দাদা-দাদীরা বাচ্চাদের মোবাইল থেকে দূরে রাখতে এবং দাদা-দাদীর একাকিত্ব দূর করতে শুরু করেছিল দাদা-দাদীর গল্পের আসর। অনেকদিন গল্প বলার পর যখন দাদা-দাদির গল্প ফুরিয়ে আসে তখন তারা আমাদের কাছে কিছু বই ধার চায় যাতে বইগুলো থেকে গল্প পড়ে পড়ে শিশুদের শোনাতে পারে। Grow Your Reader থেকে ৫০ টি বই তাদের ধার দেওয়া হয়। এই বই গুলো থেকে দাদা-দাদীরা বাচ্চাদের গল্প পড়ে শোনাতো।এবং বাচ্চারাও বই গুলো নিয়ে পড়তো। একমাসের মধ্যে বই গুলো পড়া শেষ হলে তারা সেগুলো ফেরত দেয়। এরপর তারা আরও কয়েক জায়গা থেকে বই যোগাড় করার চেষ্টা করে যাতে তাদের গল্পের আসর চলমান থাকে। তাদের এই উদ্যোগকে সাপোর্ট করতে আমাদের থেকে একটি লাইব্রেরি হিজলিপাড়াতে দেওয়া হয়। হিজলিপাড়ার আফসানা আপা এবং তার শাশুড়ী ই সেটির দেখভাল করতো। বাচ্চারা লাইব্রেরি থেকে বই নিয়ে পড়তো। কিন্তু কয়েক মাস পর মায়েরা দেখলো যে সব বাচ্চা সমান ভাবে রিডিং পড়তে পারেনা। কিছু বাচ্চা অনেক ভালো পারে। আবার কিছু বাচ্চা অনেক কম পারছে। তারা বুঝতে পারছিল যে কিছু বাচ্চা লাইব্রেরি থেকে বই নিয়ে তেমন পড়ছেনা। তাই তারা একটা উপায় বের করেছে। তারা ঠিক করেছে এখন থেকে তারা কোন বাচ্চা কয়টি বই নিচ্ছে লাইব্রেরি থেকে, মাসে কয়টি বই পড়ছে সব হিসাব রাখবে। তারা রেজিস্ট্রার খাতা এবং লাইব্রেরি কার্ড করার কথা চিন্তা করে। এতে বাচ্চাদের মধ্যে একটা উৎসাহ আসবে এবং যেসব বাচ্চারা বই পড়েনা লাইব্রেরি থেকে তাদেরকে ও তারা উৎসাহ দিবে বই পড়ার। এছাড়াও মায়েরা ঠিক করেছে তারা মাসান্তর বাচ্চাদের বই পড়ার অগ্রগতি পরিমাপ করার জন্য কম্পিটিশন বা প্রতিযোগিতা রাখবেন। যেখানে নিজেদের সামর্থ্য অনুযায়ী পুরস্কারেরও ব্যবস্থা করবেন। এতে করে তারা বুঝতে পারবেন নিয়মিত বাচ্চারা বই নিয়ে পড়ছে কিনা বা তাদের পড়ার অগ্রগতি কেমন?
এই কারনে গত শুক্রবার তারা একত্রিত হয়। নিজেদের মধ্যে দায়িত্ব ভাগাভাগি করে নেয়। রেজিস্ট্রার খাতার উদ্বোধন করে। বাচ্চারা কে কোন বই নিচ্ছে, কত তারিখে নিচ্ছে সব লিখে রাখে। আর বাচ্চারাও শক্ত কাগজে তাদের নাম লিখে লাইব্রেরি কার্ড বানিয়ে সেটি দিয়ে নিজেদের পছন্দের বই নেই। এতে বাচ্চাদের মনে উৎসব মুখর আনন্দ উদ্বেলিত হয়েছে।
বাচ্চাদের পাশাপাশি মায়েদের মধ্যেও বই পড়ার এক ধরনের পরিবর্তন লক্ষ্য করা যায়। যেসব মায়েরা পড়তে জানেন তারাও লাইব্রেরী কার্ড গ্রহণ করেছেন এবং বই নিয়ে পড়া শুরু করেছেন। বিষয়টি খুবই চমকপ্রদ।
লাইব্রেরী কার্ড গ্রহণের মাধ্যমে বই সংগ্রহের পরে সেদিন ছোট্ট একটি রিডিং পড়ার কম্পিটিশন ও অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।অংশগ্রহণকারীদের মধ্যে প্রথম দ্বিতীয় এবং তৃতীয় স্থান অধিকারী ৩ জনকে পুরস্কার হিসেবে বই বিতরণ করা হয়।
সেদিনের আয়োজনের শেষ প্রান্তে উপস্থিত মায়েরা তাদের ছোট্ট সোনা মনিদের জন্য একটা পরিকল্পনা শেয়ার করেন। সেটি ছিল যারা রিডিং পড়তে পারছে তারা নিয়মিত লাইব্রেরী থেকে বই নিয়ে পড়ার সুযোগ পাচ্ছে। তবে তাদের আরো তো কিছু শিশু রয়েছে যারা পড়তে জানে না তাদের জন্য তারা কিভাবে ভূমিকা রাখতে পারে? এমনই একটা চিন্তাধারা থেকে তারা নিজেরা একটা সলিউশন বা সমাধাম বের করেন। তারা চান পড়তে না জানা বাচ্চাদের জন্য খেলাচ্ছলে তারা পড়ার মতো একটা পরিবেশ তৈরি করবেন। এটি করার জন্য তারা মায়েরা আর্থিক সাপোর্টের মাধ্যমে বাচ্চাদের জন্য স্বরবর্ণ, ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ, আলফাবেট এবং সংখ্যার খেলনা কিনবেন। যার মাধ্যমে প্রতিদিন বিকালে বাচ্চাদের বসিয়ে দিবেন খেলতে এবং তখনই খেলার ছলে শেখাবেন বর্ণমালার পরিচয়। এভাবে একদিন তারাও হয়তো খুব শীঘ্রই রিডিং পড়া শিখবে এবং লাইব্রেরির সদস্য হতে পারবে। মায়েদের চিন্তাধারায় এমন সুন্দর সমাধান বেরিয়ে আসা সত্যিই প্রশংসার দাবিদার।
হাসিখুশি এবং আনন্দের মধ্যে পুরো বিকালটা বাচ্চা, মা, দাদা-দাদীদের সাথে কাটাতে পেরে মানসিক প্রশান্তি নিয়ে বাড়ি ফেরার একটা পরিবেশ পেয়েছি। যা চিরস্মরণীয়।

The mothers and grandparents of Hijlipara started a storytelling circle to keep children away from mobile phones and to reduce the loneliness of the elderly. After telling stories for many days, when the grandparents began to run out of stories, they requested some books from us so they could read and share stories with the children. Grow Your Reader Foundation provided them with 50 books. The grandparents read stories from these books to the children, and the children also borrowed and read them on their own. Within a month, they finished reading all the books and returned them.
After that, they tried to collect more books from different sources so that their storytelling sessions could continue. To support their initiative, we established a library in Hijlipara. Afsana Apa and her mother-in-law took responsibility for managing it. The children regularly borrowed books from the library and read them.
However, after a few months, the mothers noticed that not all children were reading at the same level. Some children were very good at reading, while others were struggling. They realized that some children were not engaging much with the library books. So, they came up with a solution. They decided to keep track of how many books each child borrowed and how many they read each month. They introduced a register book and planned library cards. This would motivate the children and encourage those who were less interested in reading.
In addition, the mothers decided to organize monthly reading competitions to assess the children’s progress. They also planned to arrange small rewards based on their ability and effort. This would help them understand whether the children were reading regularly and how their reading skills were improving.
For this reason, they gathered last Friday, distributed responsibilities among themselves, and officially launched the register system. They began recording which books each child borrowed and the dates. The children also made their own library cards using sturdy paper and used them to borrow their favorite books. This created a festive and joyful atmosphere among them.
Not only the children, but the mothers themselves also showed a positive change in their reading habits. Those who could read also took library cards and started borrowing and reading books. It was truly inspiring to witness.
After collecting books with their library cards, a small reading competition was organized that day. Among the participants, the top three winners were awarded books as prizes.
At the end of the event, the mothers shared another thoughtful plan for their children. They realized that while some children could already read and benefit from the library, others still did not know how to read. To support them, they came up with a playful learning approach. The mothers decided to contribute financially to buy learning toys such as Bangla vowels, consonants, alphabets, and numbers. Every afternoon, they would gather the children and create a playful learning environment where children could learn letters through games. In this way, they hoped that soon these children would also learn to read and become members of the library.
This thoughtful and practical solution from the mothers is truly commendable.
Spending the entire afternoon with the children, mothers, and grandparents in such a joyful and lively environment brought a deep sense of peace and happiness. It was a truly memorable experience.
