Deep conversations when people dare to be themselves

Did you see any personal change in you after the SALT process? This was one of the questions during the Knowledge Fair in Assam which we asked the participants.
ASHA* in brightly coloured clothes from Udalguri gets up. And narrates her story. " I must confess that I used to drink alchol and consume intoxicating substances. After the SALT process in my village, I realised I had to take responsibility for my health. How could I as a health worker ask others to change, when I myself was taking alcohol. And I decided to stop drinking alcohol."
,
This was a deeply moving moment for me. First the action she had taken was remarkable. The drive to change sprang from within”.  The “external facilitators” were facilitating the process in her village and  did not prescribe what was good for her. People change when they want to change. Others cannot change them. Motivation to change has to come from within.
We did not even know this. So the change and the drive to change sprang from within. Secondly, she stating this in a public gathering swithout hesitating and feeling at ease.  Reflections from some SALT facilitators might throw light  on this. " I think in SALT we do not judge people, we accept them as they are and this could be why she felt comfortable as she knew no will ridicule her." - Jyotika Baruah
"We could not see who was the community, who was the NGO, who was the leader, who was the facilitator." observed Laura Simms
This is the essence of a Knowledge Fair- exchange of knowledge and experiences. A deep conversation is when you genuinely want to share and listen.
To have a deep conversation isn’t easy. Safe, intimate, relaxed space can spark deep conversations, so the other person dares to be real with you. By opening up one's  vulnerable side makes the other person comfortable with opening up, too. This creates an environment where you’re fine with sharing more than the polished surface. It helps make ground for deeper and more meaningful conversations.

“Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity. It is the source of hope, empathy, accountability, and authenticity. If we want greater clarity in our purpose or deeper and more meaningful spiritual lives, vulnerability is the path.”

Kudos to the ASHA. We are no more vulnerable when we overcome it.
