Connecting local responses around the world
It was the last of GLF 2018 in Bandung. Participants were excited during the afternoon. We all were hoping on a bus one by one to attend a cultural event at Saung Udjo, a place where we were going to play a local cultural instrument called Angklung. Laurie came to me and asked for a short video to be recorded. This was supposed to be my reflections on why should people attend events like GLF 2018. She made sure that once the group come back I will spare few minutes for a short message.
I was pretty excited about the question but was not sure I was the right person to give message. As you know my inner child wounded through shame came up and gave me several reasons how and why I am not a relevant person to ask for a message :-D I was listening to myself and yet laughing at what am I thinking at this moment. But that bubble of thinking suddenly bursted as we drove through the streets of Bandung to reach Saung Udjo. The pressure of providing the message went into my unconscious mind as my other inner child who was excitement to play Angklung took over.
When we came to resort after having dinner, I was almost oblivious of the message that Laurie told me to record. But she remembered and quickly took to me to the room nearby the reception area to record the message. Again that child within who feels shame was putting his head up but I somehow tried to cuddle. Laurie’s camera was on and I was in front of the camera. I felt I was caught naked :-D I took a while and began to reflect. What came out from me was a learning experience, I learned from the question Laurie asked to me. I felt I was provided with a gift in shape of an insight (perhaps for me, I cannot guarantee it will be for others too). These were my words (not exact but almost)
The world has a lot of insanity around. Everywhere you see there is abundance of insanity, whether it is violence, terrorism, global warming, impact of climate change, people yelling at each other, the war between good and evil etc. Events like GLF bring sanity into this highly insane world. People like me who almost like made can come and feel sane again. We live in a connection deprived world, though we are with great number of people but we feel alone, perhaps I can say for myself. GLF provides opportunity for real connection, it is not a meeting, it is not a conference or a professional gathering. It is about sharing of humanity that we all carry in our hearts and in our souls. We come here to eliminate those differences that separates us. Here we focus on how similar we are and what commonalities, including our own vulnerabilities which makes us who we really we are - humans.
When a Muslim woman wearing a scarf can dare to write on her t-shirt that ‘orgasm is not a crime’ we bring sanity to this world. When people from different nationalities, cultures and sexual differences dance together with trans women, without feeling hesitation, respectfully and appreciate their performance, this is where we make event like GLFs meaningful. When Stella, Fazlin and Sohail can share their dark corners of their lives and be vulnerable, we bring sanity of this world. When a trans woman befriends with you and find that comfort zone where she can propose you and make fun of you, we bring sanity to this world. The list can go on…….
When we share our deeper senses of knowing and relating, events like GLFs are and will be meaningful in centuries to come.
