SALT meeting: Women Café visits Syrian artist and musician

Women Café in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, is using SALT-CLCP in their activities. Their dream is to "contribute to a beautiful and healthy world". One of the current actions is developing an international Women Choir. In an effort to learn from others, Ghalia and Zohra, recently brought a SALT visit to a Syrian musician.

Vrouwencafé bezocht een Syrische kunstenaar en oed-speler

Op zaterdag 20 februari 2021 hebben wij Zohra en ik (Ghalia) bezoek gebracht aan een Syrische kunstenaar en oed-speler in Hoofddorp. Door een SALT leerbezoek (SALT: Stimuleren, Appreciëren, Luisteren & Transfer) af te leggen, leren wij hoe anderen bepaalde uitdagingen aangaan. Wij wilden graag van meneer Alsharaa leren over hoe hij zijn talenten heeft ontdekt en of hij tips heeft voor onze activiteiten die wij organiseren op IJburg en Zeeburgereiland.

Eerst een korte introductie: Meneer Alsharaa verblijft sinds 6 jaar in Nederland met zijn vrouw en vijf kinderen. In Syrië heeft meneer twee studies afgerond; Filosofie en kunst. Hij speelt de Oed, dat is een bekende muziekinstrument uit het Midden-Oosten. Ook organiseerde hij festivals en activiteiten in Syrië.

Onze gespreksonderwerpen gingen over zijn werkzaamheden van vroeger in Syrië, maar ook over zijn ervaringen in Nederland. Meneer vindt het jammer dat hij in Nederland zich niet kan bewijzen en voelt zich ondergewaardeerd. Waarschijnlijk komt dit deels doordat hij de Nederlandse taal nog niet helemaal eigen heeft gemaakt. Hij krijgt af en toe uitnodigingen om deel te nemen aan activiteiten om Oed te spelen, soms gaat hij alleen of samen met een groep muzikanten. Hij krijgt hiervoor kleine vergoedingen. Hij vindt het jammer dat het hem niet gelukt is om een studio locatie te vinden om zijn beroepen uit te oefenen, vanwege Coronamaatregelen is dit stil komen te liggen.

Meneer Alsharaa heeft een aantal waardevolle tips gegeven die we kunnen inzetten bij talentontwikkelings activiteiten. Zijn advies is: `Gewoon doen!`. Door te doen ontdek je of je getalenteerd bent en dan kun je er verder aan werken.

Voor het Internationale Vrouwenkoor van IJburg en Zeeburgereiland had hij drie tips:

1- Meneer heeft ons duidelijk uitgelegd wat een toonladder inhoudt. Een toonladder vormt de basis van een muziekstuk. Meneer gaaf ons tips over bepaalde muziekstukken die we kunnen gebruiken voor het koor. Hij gaf tips om liedjes te kiezen die zowel Westers als Oosters klinken. Bijvoorbeeld toonladder Nahawand, deze toonladder wordt zowel door Westerse als Oosterse componisten gebruikt.

2- Hij gaf de tip om naar muziekstukken van de Egyptische componist Mohammed Ab del Wahhab te luisteren. Ab del Wahhab introduceerde Westerse ritmes in Egyptische klassieke liederen.

3- Meneer benadrukte dat het belangrijkste is om aan je talenten te blijven werken en dat te versterken door te blijven leren.

Onze leerpunten voor een volgende SALT bezoek:

1- Bij aankomst duidelijk vertellen wat precies het doel is van ons bezoek, hierdoor hopen we minder af te dwalen naar andere gespreksonderwerpen. Dit keer ging het ook veel over meneer zijn oude leven in Syrië.

2- We willen ook op een neutrale plek afspreken in plaats van bij iemand thuis. Als je minder de ‘gast’ voelt, dan geeft dit de mogelijkheid om sneller van gespreksonderwerp te veranderen.

Women's Café visited a Syrian artist and Oed player

On Saturday 20 February 2021, Zohra and I (Ghalia) visited a Syrian artist and Oed player in Hoofddorp. By doing a SALT learning visit (SALT: Stimulate, Appreciate, Listen & Transfer), we learn how others face certain challenges. We wanted to learn from Mr. Alsharaa about how he discovered his talents and if he has any tips for the activities we organise on IJburg and Zeeburgereiland.

First a short introduction: Mr. Alsharaa has been living in the Netherlands for six years with his wife and five children. In Syria he has completed two studies; Philosophy and Art. He plays the Oed, which is a well-known musical instrument from the Middle East. He also organised festivals and activities in Syria.
Our conversation topics were about his activities in Syria in the past, but also about his experiences in the Netherlands. Mr. thinks it is a pity that he cannot prove himself in the Netherlands and feels undervalued. This is probably partly because he has not yet mastered the Dutch language. He occasionally receives invitations to take part in activities to play Oed, sometimes alone or together with a group of musicians. He receives small allowances for this. He regrets that he did not succeed in finding a studio location to practice his professions, because of Corona measures this has come to a standstill.

Mr. Alsharaa gave some valuable tips that we can use in talent development activities. His advice is: `Just do it! By doing you will discover if you are talented and then you can work on it.

He had three tips for the International Women's Choir of IJburg and Zeeburgereiland:
1- He explained to us clearly what a scale is. A scale forms the basis of a piece of music. He gave us tips about certain pieces of music that we can use for the choir. He gave tips on choosing songs that sound both Western and Eastern. For example, scale Nahawand, this scale is used by both Western and Eastern composers.
2- He gave the tip to listen to pieces of music by Egyptian composer Mohammed Ab del Wahhab. Ab del Wahhab introduced Western rhythms into Egyptian classical songs.

Our learning points for a next SALT visit:
1- On arrival, clearly explain what exactly the purpose of our visit is, by doing so we hope to stray less to other topics of conversation. This time we talked a lot about his old life in Syria.
2- We also want to meet in a neutral place instead of in someone's home. If you feel less the 'guest', then this gives the opportunity to change the topic of conversation more quickly.
