Connecting local responses around the world
Towards shared responsibility in a sustained Constellation
IndoCompetence at the Heart of Global Support
Since three years a recurrent priority of the work plan of the Constellations Global Support Team is ‘organizing a Global Learning Festival’. It is our highlight of the year. People from all walks of life and all corners of the world come together. To connect, to share, to learn together. From Mauritius 2016, to Entebbe 2017 to now Bandung #GLF2018 we see how people go home with new friends in their hearts, new contacts in their phone, new inspiration for their own work, community, life, new plans and tools to make individual and shared dreams come true.
Priority in this year’s work plan is also a transition towards shared governance in the Constellation, where we are just starting to find our feet. How do we go from a Global Support Team (GST) implementing a work plan ‘for the Constellation’ to one where members and teams who wish to do so get and take an opportunity to take care of our organization and our shared dream.
In February this year we in the GST looked at our plan for the year and wondered with which host to organize the Global Learning Festival this year…. We developed a letter and terms of reference to send to teams and organisations in the Constellation and to invite their excitement for hosting ‘the world’ for joint learning.
Ping!!! Was a whatsapp message from Wiwin just when we were about to send around the letter. “Marlou, we will organize the GLF this year”.
Tingelingelingeling!!! Was a wakeup call in my brain. Of course! A support team in the Constellation can take full ownership of a priority practice for the global Constellation. The GST can handover experience and can support.
The months that followed have been a journey. An exercise in letting go for me and my GSTmates, and an exercise in taking space and in huge bravery by Wiwin, Dewi and the team they gathered around them. The work they put forward is mindboggling, because showing hands for this task meant for them they had to re-animate their team, re-organise their governance, re-formalise their bank account, re-connect with local communities ànd reach out to Constellation members in all continents and for some learning english within less than one year time.
For us in Global Support Team the months were of lending an ear when problems arised, lending a hand when support was asked and especially in finding a balance in how our interventions could support but not overrule the ownership of IndoCompetence.
To make GLF2018 a beautiful event that enriched the hearts of many of us, Indocompetence cared for people (“IndoCompetence is a place where everyone is safe, welcome and listened”), cared for resources and budget, shared their own experience, gave us all an opportunity for learning and transfer both from their way of working as from the communities they work with. The local response of Bandung was in full service of the network. For at least a week IndoCompetence was the Global Support Team of the Constellation.
I am imensely grateful for Wiwin, Dewi and all in Indocompetence for showing what is possible: When we share responsibility in reaching a shared goal, the happiness for the journey is there for all of us to enjoy.
