From Finding Her Voice to Gaining Confidence – The Transformation Story of Swatika Sarkar

ভাঙ্গুড়া উপজেলার খান মরিচ ইউনিয়নের মিছমিথুইর গ্রামে জন্ম স্বতিকা সরকারের। বাবা নাম বাবলু সরকার, মাতা দ্বিপালী সরকার। তার পিতা একজন ক্ষুদ্র ব্যবসায়ী। তিন বোনের মধ্যে স্বতিকাই বড়, বয়স ১৫ বছর। বর্তমানে দশম শ্রেণির ছাত্রী। ছোটবেলা থেকেই তার জীবন ছিল নানা সীমাবদ্ধতা ও চ্যালেঞ্জে ভরা। এই সম্প্রদায়ের অনেকেই নানা কারণে সরকারি সেবা থেকে বঞ্চিত হয়ে থাকে, যার ফলে তারা অনেক সময় শিক্ষা, স্বাস্থ্য ও সামাজিক সুযোগ-সুবিধা থেকে পিছিয়ে যায়।

 শৈশব ও চ্যালেঞ্জ

স্বতিকার পরিবার ছোট, আর্থিকভাবে স্বচ্ছল না। পরিবারের আর্থিক সীমাবদ্ধতার কারণে পড়াশোনা চালিয়ে যাওয়া অনেক সময় কঠিন হয়ে যেত। গ্রামের দূরত্ব, যাতায়াতের অভাব, এবং সমাজে বিদ্যমান বৈষম্য তাকে সবসময় পিছিয়ে রেখেছিল। তার সবচেয়ে বড় চ্যালেঞ্জ ছিল আত্মবিশ্বাসের অভাব। সে খুব লাজুক ছিল, নিজের কথা বা প্রয়োজন অন্যদের সামনে বলতে পারত না। স্কুলেও অনেক সময় বৈষম্যের শিকার হতে হয়েছে।

পরিবর্তনের শুরু – SALT CLCP এর ভূমিকা

এই কঠিন পরিস্থিতির মধ্যেই আসে Christian Aid ও We CAN বাংলাদেশ-এর সহায়তায় ECSAP প্রকল্প এবং বাংলাদেশ রুলার ইকনোমিক ডেভলপমেন্ট (ব্রেড)-এর উদ্যোগে প্রশিক্ষণ ও সচেতনতামূলক কার্যক্রম। এখানে আমরা পেঁচাকোলা কমিউনিটির মতোই খান মরিচ ইউনিয়নে একাধিকবার SALT (Stimulate, Appreciate, Learn, Transfer) সেশন আয়োজন করি।

ব্রেড-এর স্টাফরা নিয়মিত কমিউনিটিতে গিয়ে সবার গল্প শোনেন, তাদের শক্তি খুঁজে বের করতে সাহায্য করেন, এবং একসাথে স্বপ্ন দেখা ও পরিকল্পনা করার সুযোগ তৈরি করেন। ঠিক যেমনটি পেঁচাকোলা কমিউনিটির যুবরা করেছে, সেখানকার মানুষরা একে অপরকে অনুপ্রাণিত করে এবং নিজেদের পরিবর্তনের দায়িত্ব নিজেরাই নেয়।

স্বতিকা সরকারও এই প্রক্রিয়ায় যুক্ত হয়। একাধিক SALT সেশনে অংশ নেওয়ার পর সে নিজের ভেতরের শক্তি চিনতে শেখে, নিজের অধিকার সম্পর্কে সচেতন হয় এবং নিজের স্বপ্নকে পরিষ্কারভাবে দেখতে পায়। এই সেশনগুলোই তার আত্মবিশ্বাস বাড়িয়ে দেয়, আর সাহস দেয় নিজের সমস্যার কথা সবার সামনে তুলে ধরতে।

এখানেই SALT-এর সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী প্রতিফলন দেখা যায়—স্বতিকা তার আত্মবিশ্বাস খুঁজে পায়। সে বুঝতে পারে পরিবর্তন শুরু হয় নিজের কথা বলার মাধ্যমে। এই আত্মবিশ্বাসই তাকে অনুপ্রাণিত করে স্থানীয় প্রশাসনের সামনে নিজের সমস্যা তুলে ধরতে এবং একটি কার্যকর সমাধান পেতে।

এই SALT প্রক্রিয়া তাকে বুঝতে সাহায্য করে—

• তারও অধিকার আছে,
• সে-ও সমাজে অবদান রাখতে পারে,
• ভয় বা সংকোচ তাকে আটকাতে পারবে না।

প্রশিক্ষণগুলো তাকে শুধু সচেতনই করেনি, বরং আত্মবিশ্বাস দিয়েছে। এখন সে সভা-সেমিনারে, বিভিন্ন সেশনে কথা বলতে পারে, নিজের মতামত প্রকাশ করতে পারে। ধীরে ধীরে তার মধ্যে আত্মবিশ্বাস তৈরি হয়। সে বুঝতে শুরু করে নিজের কথা বলার মধ্য দিয়েই পরিবর্তন শুরু হয়।

বিশেষ মুহূর্ত

২০২৫ সালের ২১ আগস্ট ভাঙ্গুড়া উপজেলা হলরুমে অনুষ্ঠিত হয় -
“নাগরিক সংগঠনের অংশগ্রহণে জনপরিসর সম্প্রসারণ ও সুশাসন ব্যবস্থা শক্তিশালীকরণ” প্রকল্পের কর্মশালা। এখানে স্বতিকা সাহস নিয়ে সবার সামনে তার সমস্যা তুলে ধরে—

“আমার স্কুলে যেতে অনেক কষ্ট হয়। দীর্ঘ পথ হেঁটে যেতে হয়। অনেক সময় এতে পড়াশোনায় বাধা আসে। তবুও আমি পড়াশোনা চালিয়ে যাচ্ছি, কারণ আমি জানি শিক্ষা ছাড়া আমাদের ভবিষ্যৎ নেই।” তার এই সাহসী বক্তব্য উপস্থিত সবার মন ছুঁয়ে যায়।

বাইসাইকেলের উপহার – পরিবর্তনের প্রতীক

অনুষ্ঠানের প্রধান অতিথি, ভাঙ্গুড়া উপজেলা নির্বাহী অফিসার মোছাঃ নাজমুন নাহার, স্বতিকার বক্তব্য শুনে প্রতিশ্রুতি দেন সবসময় অনগ্রসর কিশোর-কিশোরীদের পাশে থাকার। বিশেষভাবে স্বতিকাকে একটি বাইসাইকেল উপহার দেন।

এটি শুধু একটি উপহার নয় – এটি ছিল স্বাধীনতার প্রতীক। এখন আর দীর্ঘ পথ হেঁটে স্কুলে যেতে হয় না। সাইকেলটি তার পড়াশোনার পথকে সহজ করবে এবং তার আত্মবিশ্বাস আরও বাড়াবে।

ভবিষ্যতের স্বপ্ন

স্বতিকা এখন বলে— “আগে আমি কিছুই বলতে পারতাম না, কিন্তু আজ আমি জানি আমার কণ্ঠস্বরও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এই সাইকেল আমার জন্য শুধু চলার মাধ্যম নয়, বরং স্বাধীনতার প্রতীক।” সে স্বপ্ন দেখে একদিন পুলিশ হয়ে নির্যাতিত মানুষের পাশে দাঁড়াবে।

পরিবর্তনের বার্তা

এ ঘটনাটি শুধু একজন কিশোরীর নয়, বরং পুরো অনগ্রসর সম্প্রদায়ের পরিবর্তনের প্রতীক। এটি দেখায় কীভাবে SALT একজন কিশোরীকে সমাজে আত্মবিশ্বাসী নাগরিক হিসেবে গড়ে তুলতে পারে। ব্রেড ও SALT প্রক্রিয়া দেখিয়েছে যে, যখন কমিউনিটি একসাথে শেখে, স্বপ্ন দেখে এবং কাজ করে, তখন সত্যিকার পরিবর্তন সম্ভব হয়।

From Finding Her Voice to Gaining Confidence – The Transformation Story of Swatika Sarkar

Swatika Sarkar was born in Mishmithuir village under Khan Morich Union of Bhangura Upazila. Her father, Bablu Sarkar, is a small businessman, and her mother, Dipali Sarkar, is a homemaker. Swatika is the eldest among three sisters and is currently a student of grade 10 at the age of 15. From childhood, her life was full of limitations and challenges. Many people in this community are deprived of government services for various reasons, which often leaves them behind in education, healthcare, and social opportunities.

Childhood and Challenges

Swatika comes from a small family with limited financial resources. Continuing her education was often difficult due to financial constraints. The long distance to school, lack of proper transportation, and existing social discrimination kept her from progressing. But her biggest challenge was the lack of self-confidence. She was very shy, unable to express her thoughts or needs in front of others. At school, she often faced discrimination as well.

The Beginning of Change – The Role of SALT & CLCP

Amidst these challenges came the ECSAP Project, implemented with the support of Christian Aid and We CAN Bangladesh, along with Bangladesh Rural Economic Development (BRED)’s initiatives for training and awareness-building activities.

Just as BRED regularly facilitates SALT sessions in Pechakola community, similar multiple SALT (Stimulate, Appreciate, Learn, Transfer) sessions were organized in Khan Morich Union. BRED Staffs regularly visited the community, listened to people’s stories, helped them identify their strengths, and created a safe space for them to dream together and plan actions.

Swatika became actively involved in this process. After attending several SALT sessions, she learned to recognize her inner strength, became aware of her rights, and began to see her dreams more clearly. These sessions built her confidence and gave her the courage to present her problems openly in front of others.

This is where the most powerful reflection of SALT was seen—Swatika found her voice and realized that change begins by speaking up. Her newfound confidence inspired her to raise her issues before the local administration and seek a practical solution.

Through the SALT process, she realized:

• She too has rights,
• She can contribute to society,
• Fear or hesitation can no longer hold her back.

 

The SALT discussion did not just make her aware, it empowered her. Now, she speaks in meetings and sessions, expresses her opinions, and regularly attends school. Slowly but surely, confidence became a part of who she is, and she understood that speaking up is the first step to change.

A Special Moment

On August 21, 2025, a workshop was held at the Bhangura Upazila Hall Room under the project –

“Expanding Civic Space and Strengthening Governance through Participation of Citizen Organizations.”

Here, Swatika bravely shared her struggles in front of everyone:

“It is very difficult for me to go to school. I have to walk a long way every day, and sometimes this becomes an obstacle to my studies. But still, I continue my education because I know we have no future without education.”

Her courageous words touched the hearts of everyone present.

The Gift of a Bicycle – A Symbol of Change

The chief guest of the event, Bhangura Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ms. Nazmun Nahar, was deeply moved by Swatika’s statement and promised to always stand beside underprivileged adolescents. She gifted Swatika a bicycle as a token of support.

This was more than just a gift – it was a symbol of freedom. Now she no longer has to walk a long distance to attend school. The bicycle has made her educational journey easier and boosted her confidence even more.

Dreaming of the Future

Swatika now says: “Before, I could not say anything. But today I know that my voice matters. This bicycle is not just a mode of transportation for me; it is a symbol of freedom.” She dreams of becoming a police officer one day and standing beside victims of injustice.

The Message of Change

This is not just the story of one teenager, but a symbol of transformation for the entire marginalized community. It shows how: Regular SALT sessions, Proper guidance and encouragement, and a small opportunity can turn a shy teenager into a confident, active citizen.

BRED and the SALT approach have shown that when a community learns, dreams, and works together, true and lasting change becomes possible.
