From Water Hyacinth to Sandbags: A Journey Toward Sustainable Youth-led Road Transformation in Pechakola

পাবনা জেলার বেড়া উপজেলার পেচাঁকোলা গ্রামে, ঈদগাহ মাঠের পাশ দিয়ে আগ্রামগামী স্কুলের কাছে রয়েছে একটি রাস্তা। গ্রামবাসীর কাছে এটি শুধু একটি রাস্তা নয়। এর ভেতরে লুকিয়ে আছে ঐক্য, দৃঢ়তা ও পরিবর্তনের গল্প—যেটি গড়ে উঠেছে গ্রামের সবচেয়ে কনিষ্ঠ সদস্যদের হাত ধরে।

প্রথম পদক্ষেপ: সূচনা ২০২৪ সালে

কয়েক বছর আগে গ্রামবাসীর সম্মিলিত প্রচেষ্টায় তৈরি হয়েছিল এই রাস্তা। এটি শুধু ঘরবাড়ি ও মাঠের সঙ্গে সংযোগই তৈরি করেনি, বরং শিশুদের স্কুলে যাওয়ার একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পথও হয়েছিল। কিন্তু সময়ের সাথে সাথে রাস্তা ভেঙে গর্ত হয়ে যায়, যা বিশেষ করে আগ্রামগামী স্কুলে যাওয়া শিশুদের জন্য হয়ে ওঠে ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ।

২০২৪ সালের অক্টোবর মাসে কৃষ্ণচূড়া কিশোর-কিশোরী দল—১১ জন উদ্যমী ছেলে-মেয়ে—প্রথমবারের মতো বসে SALT আলোচনা করে। তারা নিজেদের শক্তি, আশা ও স্বপ্ন নিয়ে কথা বলে। সেই আলোচনাতেই উঠে আসে এক জরুরি বিষয়: ভেঙে যাওয়া রাস্তা।

অক্টোবর ২৪ তারিখে তারা একটি সাহসী ও অভিনব সমাধান খুঁজে পায়— কাছের পুকুর থেকে কচুরিপানা এনে গর্ত ভরাট করা। ২০২৪ সালের ৩১ অক্টোবর, পুরো দলটি তাদের বন্ধু ও আরও কিছু ছোট শিশুদের নিয়ে কাজে নামে। তারা কাদা মেখে, কচুরিপানা কেটে এনে গর্ত ভরাট করে।

যদিও সমাধানটি ছিল অস্থায়ী, তবুও এটি কাজ করেছিল। রাস্তা সমান হয়, স্থির পানি শুকিয়ে যায়, আর মশা জন্মানো কমে গিয়ে ডেঙ্গু প্রতিরোধে সাহায্য করে। সবচেয়ে বড় বিষয়, তাদের এই উদ্যোগ দেখে বাবা-মা ও গ্রামবাসী অনুপ্রাণিত হয় এবং দীর্ঘমেয়াদি সমাধান নিয়ে ভাবতে শুরু করে।

সেদিন কৃষ্ণচূড়া দলের কিশোর-কিশোরীরা শুধু রাস্তা ঠিক করেনি— তারা জাগিয়েছে আশা, অনুপ্রেরণা এবং নতুন আলোচনার সূচনা।

শক্তিশালী পদক্ষেপ: ২০২৫ সালের অগ্রযাত্রা

তরুণরা জানত, কচুরিপানা কয়েকদিন থেকে মাসখানেক টিকবে। SALT থেকে পাওয়া শিক্ষায় তারা আরও গভীরভাবে ভাবতে শুরু করে: কীভাবে রাস্তার টেকসই সমাধান করা যায়?

২০২৫ সালের সেপ্টেম্বর— টানা বৃষ্টিতে আবারও সেই রাস্তা ভেঙে যায়। কিন্তু এবার কৃষ্ণচূড়া দলের কিশোর-কিশোরীরা কারও জন্য অপেক্ষা করেনি। অস্থায়ী সমাধান না করে তারা বেছে নেয় বালুভর্তি বস্তা দিয়ে রাস্তা মেরামত।

মরিয়মের গল্প: এক অনুপ্রেরণার সেতুবন্ধন

কৃষ্ণচূড়া দলের এক সদস্য মরিয়ম খাতুন SALT আলোচনায় তার অনুভূতি শেয়ার করে। সে বলে, “গত বছর আমরা নিজেরাই কচুরিপানা দিয়ে রাস্তা মেরামত করেছিলাম। কিন্তু এবার আমরা চাই টেকসই সমাধান। এজন্য আমাদের সহযোগিতা দরকার।”

SALT-এর আলোচনায় মরিয়মের এই খোলামেলা শেয়ারিং শুধু তার দলকেই অনুপ্রাণিত করেনি, বরং তার পরিবারের কাছেও পৌঁছে যায়। তার পরিবার আর্থিকভাবে সচ্ছল হওয়ায় মরিয়ম চেয়েছিল তারাও যেন অংশ নেয় এই সামাজিক কাজে।

তার ভাই আছমাউল গভীরভাবে স্পর্শিত হন। তিনি উপলব্ধি করেন, অল্প বয়সেই তার বোন নিজের স্বার্থ নয়, বরং সমাজের কথা ভাবছে। এই ভালোবাসা ও দায়িত্ববোধ তার ভেতরে নতুন অনুপ্রেরণা জাগায়। তিনি বলেন, “আমার বোন যখন সমাজের কথা ভাবে, তখন আমিও এ দায়িত্ব এড়াতে পারি না।”

ফলে তিনি দ্রুত উদ্যোগ নেন—৪০ বস্তা বালু সংগ্রহ করে কৃষ্ণচূড়া দলের হাতে তুলে দেন। তার এই সহায়তা শুধু রাস্তা নয়, এক ভাই-বোনের ভালোবাসা ও সামাজিক দায়িত্ববোধকেও নতুনভাবে সংজ্ঞায়িত করে।

মেরামতের খরচের বিবরণ:

• এক ট্রাক মাটি: ২০০০ টাকা
• শ্রমিক খরচ: ১৫০০ টাকা
• চল্লিশ বস্তা মাটি: ৮০০ টাকা
• মোট খরচ: ৪৩০০ টাকা

ঢেউয়ের মতো ছড়িয়ে পড়া প্রভাব

আজ রাস্তা অনেক মসৃণ, শিশুদের স্কুলে যাতায়াত নিরাপদ এবং গ্রামবাসীর জন্য চলাচল সহজ হয়েছে। তবে শারীরিক উন্নতির বাইরে এর আসল প্রভাব লুকিয়ে আছে গ্রামে জেগে ওঠা সমষ্টিগত চেতনায়।

• যুব নেতৃত্ব: কিশোর-কিশোরীরা শিখেছে নেতৃত্ব, সমস্যা সমাধান ও দলগত কাজের দক্ষতা।

• সম্প্রদায়ের অনুপ্রেরণা: বাবা-মা ও গ্রামবাসী বুঝতে পেরেছে ছোট উদ্যোগও বড় পরিবর্তন আনতে পারে।

• স্বাস্থ্য সুবিধা: গর্ত ভরাট করার ফলে স্থির পানি কমেছে, মশার উপদ্রব কমে ডেঙ্গুর ঝুঁকি হ্রাস পেয়েছে।

• সহনশীলতা ও টেকসই পরিবর্তন: স্বল্পমেয়াদি সমাধান থেকে টেকসই উদ্যোগের দিকে অগ্রসর হওয়া প্রমাণ করে তাদের চিন্তাধারার ইতিবাচক পরিবর্তন।

একটি রাস্তা, যা শুধু পথ নয়

আজ এই রাস্তা কেবল একটি চলাচলের মাধ্যম নয়—এটি দৃঢ়তা ও ঐক্যের প্রতীক। এটি সেই কিশোর-কিশোরীদের গল্প বহন করছে, যারা ছোট পদক্ষেপ নিয়ে পুরো সম্প্রদায়কে তাদের সম্মিলিত শক্তিতে বিশ্বাস করতে শিখিয়েছে।

কচুরিপানা থেকে বালুভর্তি বস্তা পর্যন্ত কৃষ্ণচূড়া কিশোর দলের যাত্রা প্রমাণ করে যে SALT পদ্ধতির আলোকে যুব নেতৃত্ব কীভাবে টেকসই পরিবর্তন আনতে পারে। এটি আমাদের মনে করিয়ে দেয়—যখন তরুণরা সাহস ও দূরদর্শিতার সঙ্গে কাজ করে, তখন তারা শুধু রাস্তা নয়, আশা, সহনশীলতা ও শক্তিশালী ভবিষ্যতের পথও তৈরি করে।

Near the Eidgah field and the road leading to Agran School lies a road that is far more than just a path for the villagers. Hidden within it is a story of unity, resilience, and transformation—driven by the youngest members of the community.

The First Step: Beginning in 2024

A few years ago, the villagers collectively built this road, which became a vital connection not only between homes and fields but also for children traveling to school. Over time, however, the road became damaged and filled with potholes, turning into a dangerous route—especially for the schoolchildren of Agran.

In October 2024, the Krisnochura adolescent group—11 energetic boys and girls—sat for their first SALT discussion. They shared their strengths, hopes, and dreams. One urgent issue emerged: the broken road.

On 24 October, they came up with an innovative solution—filling the potholes with water hyacinths collected from a nearby pond. On 31 October, the whole group, with the help of their friends and younger children, got to work. They waded through mud, cut water hyacinths, and filled the holes in the road.

Though temporary, this solution worked. The road became smoother, stagnant water dried up, and mosquito breeding reduced—helping prevent dengue. More importantly, their initiative inspired parents and villagers to start thinking about long-term solutions.

That day, the Krisnochura youth group didn’t just repair a road—they sparked hope, inspiration, and a new kind of community dialogue.

Stronger Action: Moving Forward in 2025

The young people knew water hyacinths would not last long. Through SALT reflections, they began to think deeper: How can we find a sustainable solution for the road?

By September 2025, after weeks of heavy rainfall, the road was damaged again. But this time, the Krisnochura group did not wait for anyone else. Instead of choosing another temporary fix, they decided to repair the road using sand-filled bags—a more durable solution.

Mariam’s Story: A Bridge of Inspiration

During one of the SALT discussions, Mariam Khatun, a member of the group, shared her feelings: "Last year we repaired the road with water hyacinths. But this year we want a permanent solution. For that, we need some financial support, and I want to contribute too.”

Her honest reflection didn’t just inspire her peers—it also reached her family. Mariam’s family is financially stable, and she wanted them to be part of this collective initiative.

Her brother, Asmaul, was deeply moved. He realized that even at a young age, his sister was thinking not about herself but about the community. This sense of love and responsibility sparked something within him. As he said:

“When my sister cares about the society, I cannot ignore my responsibility either.”

He immediately acted. He arranged 40 bags of sand and handed them over to the Krisnochura team. His support not only strengthened the road but also redefined the bond of love and social responsibility between a brother and a sister.

Breakdown of Repair Costs

• One truckload of soil: 2,000 BDT
• Labor cost: 1,500 BDT
• Forty bags of soil: 800 BDT
• Total cost: 4,300 BDT

Ripple Effects of the Initiative

The road is now smoother, children can safely travel to school, and villagers have easier access. But the real impact lies in the collective spirit awakened within the community.

• Youth Leadership: The adolescents developed leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
• Community Inspiration: Parents and villagers realized that even small initiatives can bring big changes.
• Health Benefits: Reduced stagnant water decreased mosquito breeding, lowering the risk of dengue.
• Resilience and Sustainability: The shift from water hyacinths to sandbags reflects a positive change in mindset—from short-term fixes to long-term solutions.

A Road That Is More Than a Path

Today, this road is not just a passage—it is a symbol of determination and unity. It carries the story of young people who proved that small steps can inspire an entire community to believe in their collective strength.

From water hyacinths to sand-filled bags, the journey of the Krisnochura youth group demonstrates how the SALT approach can nurture youth leadership and drive sustainable change.

It reminds us that when young people act with courage and vision, they don’t just repair a road—they pave the way for hope, resilience, and a stronger future.
