On May 8, 2025, following the Knowledge Fair, we organized a group SALT session with the seventh-grade boys and girls of Joynagar High School. The discussion focused on a specific theme from the dream-building session they had participated in earlier. One of the dreams they shared was to establish a classroom library. Although their school has a large library, students rarely get the opportunity to read there because the library doesn’t have a separate room. Instead, the books are kept in the teachers’ room, and students have to collect books from there. Many students feel hesitant to go and borrow books. According to the current rule, students are allowed to borrow a book only once a week to read at home and return it the next week. As a result, many students have lost interest in reading.
During the individual SALT sessions, many students identified this as a challenge and came up with their own ideas for a solution. They shared with us their desire to establish a small library within their own classroom, entirely through their own efforts. They observed that the shoe racks used during the Knowledge Fair were left unused afterward, and they could repurpose them to fulfill their dream. In the group SALT session on the 8th May, the students finalized this decision.
Students from both sections of the seventh grade—boys’ and girls’—decided to set up their own classroom libraries. They invited us to visit on the 13th to see what they had created. When we went, both Prakash Bhai and I were amazed. The way they had decorated the libraries was simply wonderful! They had brought different types of storybooks from home, written down library rules, discussed with other students why they felt inspired to do this, and even shared the initiative with their teachers. The teachers, in turn, encouraged and supported them further.
They also gave beautiful names to their respective libraries. The girls named theirs “Golpoguccho” (Story Collection) and the boys named theirs “Rong Beronger Boi” (Colorful Books). Although the number of books is currently limited, they have ambitious plans. The students in each class have agreed to contribute 10 taka per month so they can buy around 500 taka worth of books monthly. They are determined that their small library will one day grow into a large one.
I noticed a healthy sense of competition between the two sections. From this small initiative, they are moving toward a bigger goal. Their main aim is to help every student in the class develop strong reading skills. Especially during tiffin breaks and free periods, students plan to borrow books and read them in the classroom, then return them to the designated place. This system will allow them not only to enjoy their own books but also to explore stories from their peers' collections.
Seeing their enthusiasm and active participation, I became emotionally involved with them. As a small gesture from my side, I gifted them three books for their library. This made the students even more inspired. Through the addition of colorful books, they now have a chance not only to brighten their library but also their lives. The students are very hopeful that their reading skills will improve significantly through this effort.
We are now working to facilitate similar motivation among the sixth-grade students, aiming to guide them in fulfilling their dreams just like the seventh graders. We also plan to present the seventh-grade students' library initiative as a model for the sixth grade.
Comment
This is a great initiative. This will help children develop a good reading habit.
Grow Your Reader Foundation runs an initiative to establish libraries in different parts of Bangladesh. But now with a shift in their approach to more community-led approach in Village Byaspur, the students have gone on to set up their own library! Great facilitation and achievement by the GROW team. Congratulations!
