সেদিন সকালে মঈনকে পরিচয় করিয়ে দিতে ও কুশিকাটার টিম ফলোআপে যাই ১০:৩১ মিনিটে। প্রচন্ড তাপ ছিল বাহিরে।রাশিদা আন্টির টিমে পৌঁছানো মাত্র বাড়ির বাইরে থেকে ছোট্ট তাবিয়াকে ডাকতে ডাকতে বাড়ির ভেতরে প্রবেশ করি।এবং কেয়া আপুর সিঁড়িতেই বসে পড়ি। পরে রাশেদা আন্টির ঘরে জাহানারা আন্টি,, রাশিদা আন্টি ও ইউসুফ চাচার সাথে দেখা হয়। অনুমতি নিয়ে ঘরে প্রবেশ করা মাত্রই আন্টিরা বসার জায়গা ঠিক করে দেয় এবং বসে পড়ি সাথে শুরু হয় গল্প।কয়েক মিনিট গল্প করতে করতেই রাশিদা আন্টি উঠে পড়েন।এবং পরম যত্নে আমাকে ও মঈনকে ১ গ্লাস করে লেবুর শরবত বানিয়ে দেয়।এবং বলে এটা তোমরা খেয়ে নাও প্রচন্ড গরমে একটু আরাম পাবে। ঠিক তাই প্রচন্ড তৃষ্ণার্তের পর যেন এক ফালি সস্তি ফিরে পেলাম।তারপর,,, ঈদ নিয়ে অনেক কথা হল :রাশিদা আন্টি তার ঈদ উপভোগ বর্ননা করলেন,
ঈদ মানেই নতুন কাপড়, নতুন হাসি। এই হাসির পেছনে যাদের নীরব অবদান থাকে, তাদের একজনের ভুমিকায় ছিলেন রাশিদা আন্টি। কাটা খালি কুশিকাটা টিমের রাশিদা আন্টি এবারের ঈদে ও পরবর্তী তাদের বাড়িতে বিবাহ অনুষ্ঠান থাকায় আন্টি ২৪ জনের গায়ে হলুদের কাপড়ের কাজ করেছেন। নিজের পরিবার ও প্রতিবেশির পরিবারের নতুন জামা পরে আয়নার সামনে দাঁড়ানোর আনন্দটুকু এসেছে তার হাত ধরেই। উপার্জন ও করেছেন বেশ। সুতার প্রতিটা টানে তিনি শুধু নকশা তোলেননি, বুনেছেন ২৪টা পরিবারের স্বস্তি।বেশআনন্দ ও হাসিখুশিতে কেটেছে এবারের ঈদ। এই জায়গাটিতে অনেক প্রশংসা করেছি রাশিদা আন্টিকে। আন্টি এবার প্রতিটি গায়ে হলুদের ড্রেস ২০০ টাকা দরে বানিয়েছে। এতে তার ৪৪০০ টাকা আয় হয়েছে।এই গরমে কতটা পরিশ্রম করেছেন তিনি নিজের এবং অন্যদের কথা চিন্তা করে এজন্য। পরে কথা হয় জাহানারা আন্টির সাথে হিজলি পাড়ার একটা অর্ডারি পাখার ব্যাপারে। হিজলি পাড়া থেকে ঈদের পরে ফলোআপে গেলে তারা আমাকে পাখার কথা স্মরণ করিয়ে দেয় যেটা আমি সে দিন কাটাখালিতে ফলোআপে গিয়ে আন্টিকে মনে করিয়ে দেই। সাথে সাথেই মুচকি হেসে দিয়ে আন্টি বলেন :বাবা ঈদের সময় আমার ছোট নাতি-নাতনি এবং মেয়েরা আসার কারণে আমি পাখাটি তৈরি করে খুব যত্ন সহকারে উপরে তুলে রেখেছি আজই আমি তোমাকে দিয়ে দিব। সাথে আমার সরঞ্জামাদি ও তুলে রেখেছি সেলাইয়ের সুতা, কাটা ইত্যাদি।কোন এক সময় বেড়াতে এসে আমার এক নাতনি আমার অনেক সুতা নষ্ট করে ফেলেছিল যেটা আর আমি ব্যবহার করতে পারিনি তাই আগে থেকেই এবার সতর্ক ছিলাম। এজায়গা আন্টিকে প্রশংসা করেছি খুব ভালো করেছেন আন্টি গরমে হিজলিপাড়ার আপা ও খুব কষ্ট পাচ্ছে তাই আপনি তার কথা চিন্তা করে যে তৈরি করে রেখেছেন এজন্য ধন্যবাদ।কেয়া আপুর বাসায় সেদিন মেহমান আসার কারণে কেয়া আপু সময় দিতে পারেনি তবে হাত নেড়ে রান্না ঘর থেকে সায় দিয়েছিল।

কথা হয় এক মুরুব্বি লোক ইউসুফ কাকার সাথে। বয়সের ভারে নুয়ে পড়েননি তিনি। স্ব-ইচ্ছায় আমাদের সাথে অনেক ধরনের কথা বললেন। বারবার রিটায়ার্ডমেন্টের কাগজ হাতে পেয়েও আবার চাকরিতে ফিরেছেন। কারণ একটাই, কারো ওপর ভরসা করে বৃদ্ধকাল কাটাতে চাননি। নিজের উপার্জনে, নিজের পায়ে দাঁড়িয়ে শেষ বয়সটুকু সম্মানের সাথে পার করার জেদ তাকে থামতে দেয়নি। ওনার গল্প শুনলে বোঝা যায়, বয়স শুধু একটা সংখ্যা, যা ইচ্ছাশক্তির কাছে হার মানতে বাধ্য।
একই সাথে চেষ্টা করেছি মিতার ভাই রিফাতের খোঁজ নেওয়ার। আন্টিরা জানায় কয়েকদিন আগে রিফাত মরার মতো হয়ে পড়েছিল। একদিকে হাড় ভাঙার যন্ত্রনা অন্যদিকে হামে আক্রান্ত হয়ে মরমর অবস্থা হয়েছিল।হঠাৎ করে খাওয়া-দাওয়া সব বন্ধ করে দিয়েছিল। পরিবারের সবাই অনেক কান্নাকাটি করে তাকে দ্রুত ফরিদপুর হসপিটালে ভর্তি করা হয়েছিল। পরে ডাক্তারের চিকিৎসা পেয়ে কিছুটা অবস্থার উন্নতি হয়েছে এখন ও মোটামুটি সুস্থ। এবং বাড়িতেই আছে অর্থাৎ কাটাখালিতে আছে।
এই পরিবারটার দিকে তাকালে আরেকটা জিনিস চোখে পড়ে, একসাথে মিলেমিশে থাকার ক্ষমতা। রাশিদা আন্টির ঘরে জাহানারা আন্টি পরম সুখে খাওয়া দাওয়া করছিল। গল্প করছিল।খাবারের বাটি রেখেই চলে গেল। রাশিদা আন্টি তুলে রাখল এই যে মমত্ববোধ সবাই সবার পাশে দাঁড়ায়, একে অন্যের শক্তি হয়। তাদের হাতের কাজ এত নিখুঁত যে দেখলেই বোঝা যায় কত যত্ন আর সময় দিয়ে প্রতিটা পাখা বানানো। কুশিকাটা, পাখা, আর অদম্য জীবনবোধ, সব মিলে এই পরিবারটা যেন একটা ছোটখাটো কারিগরশালা।এখন তারা আর্থিকভাবেও প্রতিষ্ঠিত হওয়ার প্রচেষ্টা করে চলছে।

That morning, at around 10:31 a.m., I went with Moin to introduce him to the crochet team and conduct a follow-up visit. The heat outside was intense. As soon as we arrived at Rashida Aunty’s house, I called little Tabiya from outside and entered the home, taking a seat on Keya Apu’s staircase.
Later, inside Rashida Aunty’s room, we met Jahanara Aunty, Rashida Aunty, and Yusuf Chacha. After asking for permission to enter, they warmly arranged a place for us to sit, and our conversation began.
Just a few minutes into our discussion, Rashida Aunty stood up and lovingly prepared a glass of homemade lemon juice for both Moin and me. Smiling, she said, “Drink this—you’ll feel better in this terrible heat.” She was absolutely right. After being exhausted and thirsty, it felt like a refreshing moment of relief.
We then spent some time talking about Eid. Rashida Aunty shared how she enjoyed the celebration. Eid means new clothes and new smiles, and behind many of those smiles are silent contributors like her.
As a member of the Katakhali crochet team, Rashida Aunty worked on 24 “Gaye Holud” outfits this season because of Eid and an upcoming wedding in their family. The joy that her own family and neighboring families felt while wearing their new clothes and standing proudly in front of the mirror was made possible through her skilled hands.
She also earned a good income. With every stitch of thread, she was not only creating beautiful embroidery but also weaving comfort and happiness into the lives of 24 families. Her Eid was filled with joy and satisfaction, and I sincerely praised her dedication.
This year, she charged 200 BDT for each Gaye Holud dress, earning a total of 4,400 BDT. Considering the extreme summer heat, her hard work and commitment to supporting both her own family and others deserved special appreciation.
Later, I spoke with Jahanara Aunty about a handmade fan requested by the women of Hijlipara. During my follow-up visit there after Eid, they had reminded me about it, so I mentioned it again while visiting Katakhali.
With a gentle smile, Jahanara Aunty replied, “During Eid my grandchildren and daughters came to visit, so I carefully finished the fan and stored it safely upstairs. I’ll give it to you today. I also put away all my sewing materials—threads, scissors, and other tools. Once, one of my granddaughters accidentally ruined a lot of my thread while visiting, so this time I made sure to keep everything safely stored in advance.”
I praised her thoughtful preparation and thanked her for considering the needs of the women in Hijlipara, who were also struggling in the summer heat.
Since Keya Apu had guests at her home that day, she couldn’t spend much time with us. However, she greeted us warmly with a wave from the kitchen.
We also had a meaningful conversation with Yusuf Chacha, an elderly man whose spirit has not been diminished by age. He spoke with us enthusiastically and shared that although he had received his retirement papers several times, he chose to return to work each time.
His reason was simple: he did not want to spend his old age depending on anyone else. He was determined to support himself and live his later years with dignity through his own earnings. Listening to his story made it clear that age is just a number when faced with strong determination and self-respect.
At the same time, I tried to inquire about Rifat, Mita’s brother. The aunties told us that only a few days earlier he had been in critical condition. He had been suffering from the pain of a broken bone while also contracting measles, leaving him extremely weak. He suddenly stopped eating and drinking altogether.
The family was deeply distressed and rushed him to Faridpur Hospital, where he received medical treatment. Thankfully, his condition has improved, and he is now recovering at home in Katakhali.
Looking at this family, another remarkable quality stands out—their ability to live together with unity and mutual care. While we were there, Jahanara Aunty was happily eating and chatting in Rashida Aunty’s home. When she finished, she simply left her bowl behind, and Rashida Aunty quietly picked it up without hesitation.
This simple act reflected the deep sense of affection and solidarity among them. They support one another and become each other’s strength.
The craftsmanship of their handmade fans is so precise and beautiful that anyone can see the patience and care invested in every piece. Crochet work, handcrafted fans, and an unwavering spirit of perseverance come together to make this family feel like a small artisan workshop—one that is steadily working toward greater financial stability and self-reliance.
