Learning Beyond Boundaries: Reflections from BRED’s Exposure Visit

26 November 2025 was a truly special and unforgettable day for the Bangladesh Rural Economic Development (BRED) team. It was not just different, but deeply emotional - a day that will remain alive in our memories. This was more than a visit; it was a journey of learning, feeling, understanding, and building strong community connections. On this day, we visited the Munshiganj community of our ARC cohort partner, Alokito Kori—especially a floating community living along the banks of the Ichamati River. From our ARC initiative in Pechakola, Bera, Pabna, two young representatives—Marufa and Sadia, members of the Tiya Group and Ariful from Tiger Team, joined us. Our journey began with a strong sense of care and responsibility. Around 1:00 p.m., we reached Mawa Ghat, where we enjoyed lunch together- Padma River Hilsa fish and different traditional bhortas. The journey was filled with laughter, stories, and joy. Along the way, Nishat Apu and Parvez Bhai from the Alokito Kori team kept checking on us. Their warmth made us feel welcomed even before we arrived.

After lunch, by around 4:00 p.m., we reached Malkhanagar, Taltola area of Munshiganj. As soon as we arrived, we were surprised to see a large stage being built. We learned that a Bedey community fair was being organized there. From there, we walked towards the banks of the Ichamati River. Along the riverbank, we saw rows of small and medium-sized boats. Under the roofs of these boats, people have been living for more than 50 years. Several generations were born and raised on these boats, on this river. Seeing people living in floating homes for the first time filled us with curiosity and excitement. For a moment, I even wondered how it would feel to live like them—floating on the river.

But that feeling quickly turned into a deep realization. As we spoke with elderly men and women, we learned their life stories. One grandmother told us that most of them originally lived along the Padma River in Shariatpur, while some came from Louhajang, Munshiganj. Due to severe river erosion, they lost everything and finally took shelter along the Ichamati River. In the beginning, there were only 10–15 families. Over the years, more people who lost their homes to river erosion joined them, and the floating community gradually grew. Families expanded, marriages happened, and children were born. Some children grew up and moved to cities for work, including garment factories, leaving the floating life behind. However, for those who arrived 40–50 years ago, these boats are now their permanent home. Even when their children improved their lives, emotional attachment kept the elders here. 

In these small boats, people sleep, cook, eat, and even use the toilet. Two to four people live closely together in a single boat. Though they struggle financially, they are rich in love, kindness, and hospitality. They love Parvez Bhai and Nishat Apa like their own children. Despite their daily work and responsibilities, they waited for us with eager anticipation. Time is extremely valuable in their lives—many of them live hand to mouth. Yet, they managed their work and spent time with us, welcoming us warmly from the very first moment. They spoke with such heartfelt sincerity that it hardly felt like we were visiting for the first time. It felt as if we were in Pechakola, not Munshiganj. Although they could not afford to buy flowers, they had a strong desire to welcome us. So, they collected Kashful from the riverbank, made small bouquets, and greeted us with smiles.

As I walked around and talked with everyone, I noticed an elderly woman with a very calm nature who could no longer leave her boat due to old age.

Later, we all sat together in a circle—our team, the children, and the elders of the community. We sat together, held a group SALT session, and shared dreams. Two children shared their dreams—one wants to become a doctor, another a makeup artist. A little girl named Suria became very close to us. Her hair color matched Pia Apa’s, which led to laughter and fun moments. Then, two children welcomed us with a beautiful dance performance.

They do not have many facilities, a good environment, or a modern lifestyle. But they have strong interest, passion, and amazing talent. Some draw beautifully, some dance wonderfully. Even without professional training, their talents are impressive. These children began their learning through Alokito Kori Children’s School. Today, all of them go to school and dream of becoming doctors, artists, teachers, and successful painters.

This floating community has survived generation after generation while fighting constant challenges. Living on boats during storms, heavy rain, and floods is extremely risky. Still, they continue to struggle and move forward. Some are involved in small jobs to improve their income. They do not want to leave their boats because these boats belong to them—living on land would require paying rent. They have even arranged solar electricity. Despite endless uncertainty, smiles never leave their faces.

One river took everything from them, and another river gave them shelter. Nature seems to hold people within itself in this way.

Even after evening, when night approached, they did not want to let us go. We were so absorbed with them that we lost track of time. Often, I thought—if only the clock could stop for a while, how wonderful that would be. Then we left, carrying with us love and unforgettable moments.

Our Realization

Seeing their lives made us realize how fortunate we are. We often feel sad over small losses, while they have learned how to live and stay strong even after losing everything. We returned carrying this deep lesson and inspiration. On our way back, we traveled together with Nishat Apa and Niloy Bhai. The day was filled with laughter, joy, and deep self-reflection.

For our community, this was the first major exposure visit. Two members traveled outside Pabna and came to Dhaka for the first time in their lives. This visit is a great success of the Global Fund for Children’s ARC initiative and the SALT approach. For so long, they had only heard that similar communities exist across Bangladesh. Today, they saw it with their own eyes. They shared their stories and initiatives with the Munshiganj community, which increased their motivation even more.

After returning, the Tiya Group started working with new energy, and the Tiger Team expanded their activities. In this way, community learning and sharing sessions continue to strengthen the bond among our cohort and communities.

Today, the ARC Bangladesh cohort is not just a program—it is a family.

২৬ নভেম্বর ২০২৫—বাংলাদেশ রুরাল ইকোনমিক ডেভেলপমেন্ট (BRED) টিমের জন্য দিনটি ছিল সত্যিই ভিন্নরকম, গভীরভাবে অনুভব করার মতো এবং স্মৃতির পাতায় চিরজীবন্ত হয়ে থাকার মতো একটি দিন। এটি শুধু একটি ভিজিট নয়, বরং শেখা, অনুভব, উপলব্ধি আর কমিউনিটি–বন্ধনের এক অনন্য অভিজ্ঞতা। এই দিন আমরা গিয়েছিলাম আমাদের ARC cohort partner আলোকিত করি টিমের মুন্সীগঞ্জ কমিউনিটিতে—বিশেষ করে ইছামতি নদীর তীরে গড়ে ওঠা এক ভাসমান জনগোষ্ঠীর কাছে। যাত্রার আগে সবার সঙ্গে কথা বলে প্রয়োজনীয় ওষুধ, পানির বোতল, হালকা নাস্তা—সব কিছু গুছিয়ে নেওয়া হয়। এক ধরনের যত্ন আর দায়িত্ববোধ নিয়েই শুরু হয়েছিল আমাদের পথচলা।

দুপুর ১টার দিকে আমরা পৌঁছে যাই মাওয়া ঘাটে। সেখানে সবাই মিলে পদ্মার ইলিশ আর বাহারি ভর্তা দিয়ে দুপুরের খাবার সেরে নিই। পথজুড়ে ছিল হাসি, গল্প আর আনন্দ। আলোকিত করি টিমের নিশাত আপু ও পারভেজ ভাই মাঝেমধ্যেই আমাদের খোঁজ নিচ্ছিলেন—এই আন্তরিকতাই যেন আগেই আমাদের আপন করে নিচ্ছিল। দুপুরের খাবার শেষে প্রায় ৪টার মধ্যে আমরা পৌঁছে যাই মুন্সীগঞ্জের মালখানগর, তালতলা এলাকায়। ওখানে পৌঁছে প্রথমেই আমরা অবাক হয়ে যাই—একটি বিশাল স্টেজ নির্মাণের কাজ চলছিল। জানতে পারি, এখানে বেদে কমিউনিটির একটি মিলনমেলার আয়োজন চলছে। এরপর আমরা এগিয়ে যাই ইছামতি নদীর তীরের দিকে।

নদীর পাড়ে সারি সারি ছোট ও মাঝারি নৌকা—সেগুলোর ছাউনির নিচে প্রায় ৫০ বছরেরও বেশি সময় ধরে বসবাস করছে একদল মানুষ। কয়েক প্রজন্মের জন্ম এই নৌকাতেই, এই নদীতেই। প্রথমবার ভাসমান নৌকাবাড়িতে বসবাসরত মানুষদের দেখে এক ধরনের রোমাঞ্চ কাজ করছিল মনে। মনে হচ্ছিল—কেমন হতো যদি আমিও এমন নৌকায় থাকতাম, ভেসে বেড়াতাম তাদের মতো? কিন্তু সেই রোমাঞ্চ মুহূর্তেই বদলে যায় গভীর বাস্তবতায়। কয়েকজন চাচি, দাদা, দাদি—বয়স্ক মুরুব্বিদের সঙ্গে কথা বলে জানতে পারি তাদের জীবনের গল্প। একজন দাদির সঙ্গে কথা বলার সময় জানতে পারি, তাদের বেশিরভাগএরই গ্রামের বাড়ির ছিল শরীয়তপুরের পদ্মা নদীর পাড়ে, কেউ কেউ এসেছেন মুন্সীগঞ্জের লৌহজং এলাকা থেকেও। কিন্তু ভয়াল নদীভাঙনে সব হারিয়ে তারা আশ্রয় নিয়েছেন ইছামতি নদীর তীরে।

শুরুতে ছিল মাত্র ১০–১৫টি পরিবার। কিন্তু বছরের পর বছর নদীভাঙনে সর্বস্ব হারানো মানুষদের আসতে আসতে এই ভাসমান কমিউনিটি বড় হতে থাকে। সময়ের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে পরিবার বড় হয়, বিয়ে হয়, সন্তান জন্ম নেয়। কেউ কেউ বড় হয়ে কাজের সন্ধানে শহরমুখী হয়েছে—গার্মেন্টসসহ বিভিন্ন পেশায় যুক্ত হয়ে ভাসমান জীবনের ইতি টেনেছে। তবে যারা ৪০–৫০ বছর আগে এসেছিলেন—এই নৌকাই এখন তাদের ভিটে-মাটি। সন্তানদের কিছুটা উন্নতি হলেও মায়ার টানে তারা এখানেই থেকে গেছেন। এই ছোট নৌকাতেই তাদের ঘুম, রান্না, খাওয়া, এমনকি শৌচকার্যও সম্পন্ন হয়। একটি নৌকায় গাদাগাদি করে ২–৪ জন মানুষ বাস করে। আর্থিক অভাব থাকলেও অভাব নেই ভালোবাসা, আন্তরিকতা আর মানুষকে আপন করে নেওয়ার ক্ষমতায়।

তারা পারভেজ ভাই ও নিশাত আপুকে নিজেদের সন্তানের মতো ভালোবাসেন। দৈনন্দিন জীবনের কাজকর্ম ফেলে অধীর আগ্রহে আমাদের জন্য অপেক্ষা করছিলেন তারা । তাদের জীবনে সময়ের মূল্য অপরিসীম—অনেকেই দিন আনে দিন খায়। তবুও তারা নিজেদের কাজ সামলে আমাদের সঙ্গে ছিলেন, আন্তরিকভাবে আমাদেরকেও প্রথম দেখাতেই আপন করে নিয়েছিলেন। এতটাই আন্তরিকতায় কথা বলছিলেন যে মনে হচ্ছিল না আমরা কেউ প্রথমবার এখানে এসেছি। যেন পেঁচাকোলায়ই আছি—মুন্সীগঞ্জে নয়।

আমি হাঁটতে হাঁটতে ঘুরে ঘুরে সবার সঙ্গে কথা বলছিলাম। সেখানে একজন বৃদ্ধ মানুষকে দেখি—খুব শান্ত স্বভাবের, বয়সের ভারে এখন আর নৌকার বাইরে বের হতে পারেন না। এরপর আমরা সবাই গোল হয়ে বসি—আমাদের টিম, মুন্সীগঞ্জ কমিউনিটির শিশু ও বৃদ্ধ সবাই মিলে। তাদের ফুল কেনার আর্থিক সামর্থ্য না থাকলেও ছিল প্রবল আগ্রহ। তাই নদীর পাড় থেকে কাশফুল সংগ্রহ করে সেই ফুলের তোড়া বানিয়ে তারা হাসিমুখে আমাদের বরণ করে নিয়েছিল।

একসাথে বই পড়া, গ্রুপ SALT করা, নিজেদের স্বপ্ন শেয়ার করা শুরু হয়। দুইজন শিশু জানায়—একজন বড় হয়ে ডাক্তার হতে চায়, আরেকজন মেকআপ আর্টিস্ট। ছোট্ট সুরিয়া নামের এক মেয়ের সঙ্গে আমরা সবাই খুব মিশে যাই। তার চুলের রঙ পিয়া আপুর সঙ্গে মিল—এই নিয়ে হাসি-ঠাট্টা, মজা। এরপর দুইজন শিশু মনোমুগ্ধকর নৃত্য পরিবেশন করে আমাদের স্বাগত জানায়। ওদের সুযোগ–সুবিধা নেই, নেই ভালো পরিবেশ বা আধুনিক জীবন। কিন্তু আছে প্রবল আগ্রহ আর অসাধারণ প্রতিভা। কেউ অসাধারণ আঁকে, কেউ নাচে। কোনো প্রফেশনাল ডিগ্রি না থাকলেও তাদের প্রতিভা নিখুঁত। এই শিশুদের হাতেখড়ি হয়েছে আলোকিত শিশু করি স্কুলের মাধ্যমে। আজ সবাই স্কুলে পড়ে। কেউ ভবিষ্যতে ডাক্তার, কেউ শিল্পী, কেউ শিক্ষক বা সফল চিত্রশিল্পী হওয়ার স্বপ্ন দেখছে।

এই ভাসমান জনগোষ্ঠী যুগের পর যুগ প্রতিকূলতার সঙ্গে লড়াই করে টিকে আছে। ঝড়–বৃষ্টি–বন্যায় নৌকায় থাকা ভীষণ ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ। তবুও তারা লড়াই চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে। কেউ ছোটখাটো কাজে যুক্ত হয়ে অর্থনৈতিক অবস্থার উন্নতির চেষ্টা করছে। তারা নৌকা ছাড়তে চায় না—কারণ এটি তাদের নিজের। বাইরে থাকলে ভাড়া দিতে হতো। তারা সৌরবিদ্যুতের ব্যবস্থাও করে নিয়েছে। শত অনিশ্চয়তার মাঝেও তাদের মুখে হাসির কমতি নেই। একটি নদী তাদের সব কেড়ে নিয়েছে, আরেকটি নদী তাদের বুকে ঠাঁই দিয়েছে। প্রকৃতি যেন এভাবেই মানুষকে নিজের মধ্যে ধারণ করে রাখে।

বিকেল পেরিয়ে সন্ধ্যা এল, রাত বারছিল। কিন্তু তারা আমাদের কিছুতেই ছাড়তে চাইছিল না। তাদের সঙ্গে আমরা মিশে গিয়েছিলাম এমনভাবে যে সময়ের খেয়ালই থাকলো না কখন রাত হতে শুরু করলো। বারবার মনে হচ্ছিল— ঘড়ি যদি কিছু সময়ের জন্য থেমে যেত, কতই না ভালো হতো ।এরপর আমরা ফিরলাম অনেক ভালোবাসা এবং আবেগঘন মুহূর্ত নিয়ে।

আমাদের উপলব্ধি

তাদের জীবন দেখে মনে হলো—সৃষ্টিকর্তা আমাদের কত ভালো রেখেছেন। আমরা অনেক সময় সামান্য কিছু না পেলে হতাশ হই। অথচ তারা হারানোর মধ্য দিয়েও বেঁচে থাকার শক্তি খুঁজে পেয়েছে। এই জীবনদর্শন আর অনুপ্রেরণা নিয়েই আমরা ফিরেছি। ফেরার পথে নিশাত আপু, নিলয় ভাইসহ আমরা একসাথে ফিরি। দিনটি ছিল হাসি–মজা আর গভীর আত্ন-উপলব্ধীর দিন।

আমাদের কমিউনিটির জন্য এটি ছিল প্রথম বড় এক্সপোজার ভিজিট। দুজন সদস্য জীবনে প্রথমবার পাবনার বাইরে, ঢাকায় এসেছে। এটি Global Fund for Children–এর ARC initiative এবং SALT পদ্ধতির এক বড় সাফল্য। যারা এতদিন শুনত—বাংলাদেশের নানা প্রান্তে তাদের মতো আরও কমিউনিটি কাজ করছে—আজ তারা নিজের চোখে দেখেছে। নিজেদের গল্প ও উদ্যোগ শেয়ার করেছে মুন্সীগঞ্জ কমিউনিটির সঙ্গে। এতে তাদের আগ্রহ আরও বেড়েছে।

কমিউনিটিতে ফিরে টিয়া দল নতুন উদ্যমে কাজ শুরু করেছে, টাইগার দলও তাদের কাজের পরিসর বাড়াচ্ছে। এইভাবেই কমিউনিটি লার্নিং ও শেয়ারিং সেশনগুলো আমাদের cohort ও কমিউনিটির বন্ধনকে আরও শক্ত করছে।

আজ ARC Bangladesh cohort শুধু একটি প্রোগ্রাম নয়—এটি এক পরিবার।
