I have to share two stories that touched me deeply and stayed in my thoughts. What began as a discussion about mobile phone addiction evolved into a powerful exploration of gender roles and the challenges girls face. The efforts of these communities to address such issues are very inspiring and show how small steps can lead to significant change.
In Dokkhinpara and Joynagar, communities are finding creative ways to help girls overcome challenges and thrive.
In Dokkhinpara, a group SALT session revealed that girls spent more time on mobile phones because they are not allowed to play outside like boys. Their parents don’t feel that it is safe for them, and it also goes against societal norms. The solution? Organizing group play sessions in courtyards. Now, girls are spending time playing together, reducing their reliance on phones and building stronger bonds.
At Joynagar High School, female students shared that they couldn’t use the school field because boys dominated it. After 60 years of the school establishment the principal stepped in, leveled the field, and encouraged girls to play. Today, they are enjoying their space and feeling more included. In the past 60 years, female students made several requests, but no one took them seriously.
Through SALT conversations, the community realized their strength and ability to take small actions to solve their own challenges. They decided not to wait for others to come as their saviors.
These efforts demonstrate how simple actions can create significant changes, challenging societal norms and empowering our girls to thrive.
