On February 15, 2025, the Grow Your Reader Foundation (GYRF) team set out from Dhaka, full of excitement. Unlike our previous visit, where we had only interacted with the teachers, this time, we had the opportunity to engage with the students as well. The anticipation of listening to their voices, understanding their dreams, and witnessing their aspirations firsthand made the journey even more meaningful.
Upon reaching Joynagar High School, we split into two groups. Sadia Apa and Shadman, our new Program Associate, conducted a teacher training session in one room, while Prokash Bhai, Manira Apa, and I gathered in another room with the students for a dream-building session. We had selected four students from each grade, 6 to 9—two boys and two girls—to ensure diverse and meaningful participation.
We began with a group SALT session, expecting to seat boys and girls separately to avoid shyness. However, the students chose to sit together, with an open mind. Many had already experienced SALT facilitation before, so they quickly grasped the task. Paired up across different grades, they shared personal stories that made them feel proud and then appreciated each other’s strengths. To strengthen this, we gave them colorful paper to write down their strengths. Later, they held the papers above their heads and shared their strengths with everyone.
Next, we formed two groups and started the dream-building exercise. The students were asked: “What is your dream for your school by the year 2035?” They were free to express their vision through art, poetry, or song. The results were nothing short of inspiring. Each group has written a poem along with key points that needed to be documented.
Group Padma’s Dream for 2035
Group Padma’s Dream for 2035
In our dream, we see the school, we see,
Learning some things as we write.
In the past, our school was like a broken house—
But no longer, our school is not like before—
Because it has improved a lot.
We will learn English, Math, and Bengali,
And move forward; this is our hope.
We must keep the environment clean,
Only then will our school improve greatly.
We need to maintain a student club, with a better education system,
We cannot do anything that would make us lose trust.
Boys and girls will have equal rights, without any discrimination,
Only then will we become a developed nation, a nation of equality.
Our Dream for 2035:
• Clean environment.
• Pure water.
• Library.
• Dustbins.
• Flower garden.
• Improved education system.
• Common room.
• Playground for girls.
• Expanded classrooms.
• Clean toilets.
• Increased number of benches.
Group Meghna’s Dream for 2035
Group Meghna’s Dream for 2035
We will build an ideal school,
We will all work together.
In the work, the light of knowledge,
We will spread it today.
The country will know, the world will know,
This golden school of ours.
Our Dream for 2035:
• Establish an ideal model school.
• Environmentally clean campus.
• Improve the library.
• Playground for girls.
• Create a flower garden as an attraction.
• Provision of pure drinking water.
• Clean toilets.
• Proper management of dustbins.
• Establish special clubs (Debating Club, Student Club, Art Club, etc.).
• Sufficient benches.
• More classrooms are needed.
• Sports and cultural activities every year to keep both body and mind healthy.
When we heard the dreams from both the groups, it showed so much similarity, that it surprised us. After the students finalized their dreams, we invited the teachers to listen to their presentations. The students shared their dreams with great enthusiasm, which led to a deeper discussion. It also reminded the teachers of their own dreams for the school. When we read their previous vision statement, we then asked the teachers to present the dream they dreamt earlier during the first dream building session.
Teachers’ Dream:
By 2035, we aim to transform our school into a model institution with clean, hygienic toilets and proper facilities for safe drinking water. Separate classrooms will be arranged for students with special needs, underprivileged, and vulnerable learners. Competitions will be organized among different clubs, classroom libraries will be established, and all necessary steps will be taken to create an educational environment with digital classrooms. Various sports and cultural activities will be arranged to foster a healthy mindset among students. Teachers will be trained through modern programs to enhance their skills and qualifications. We will take all necessary measures to prepare students to meet global standards. Only then will we be able to build our dream school by 2035.”
The teachers read this dream, and the students felt very inspired. As the teachers and students listened to all the dreams, they realized how similar their visions were. Then, we asked the teachers and students to combine all their dreams into one and write it down.
Then this is what they all came up with:
By 2035, we aim to transform our school into a model institution with a clean and well-maintained campus, safe drinking water facilities, a well-stocked library, an attractive flower garden, improved and hygienic toilets, a canteen, and a separate playground for girls. Various sports and cultural activities will be organized to promote a healthy mindset among students. We will increase the number of classrooms, ensure sufficient benches in classrooms, establish student clubs to prepare students for global standards, and introduce digital classrooms with multimedia facilities. Accommodation will be arranged for students from distant areas, and adequate dustbins will be placed throughout the campus. Additionally, we will set up a well-equipped common room for girls. Only then will we be able to build our dream school by 2035. By implementing modern training programs, we will develop skilled and qualified teachers, ensuring the most advanced learning environment.
This dream beautifully reflects the shared hopes of both students and teachers. It is not just about better facilities but also about creating a nurturing and empowering learning environment.
Self-Assessment
After the dream-building session, it was time for self-assessment—an important step to understand where the school currently stands and what progress has been made. Both students and teachers took part in this process, evaluating different aspects of their school based on a structured rubric.
During the assessment, some differences in opinion emerged. For example, students wanted healthier food options from the school canteen, but teachers believed that the school was already providing proper meals. When teachers asked students what changes they wanted, the students explained that they preferred nutritious food instead of deep-fried snacks. This led to a meaningful discussion, where teachers listened to the students’ concerns and understood their perspective.
One big improvement was seen in the discussion about a playground for girls. Before, teachers said that the school’s playground was mostly used by boys, so girls didn’t have space to play. They wanted a separate playground for girls and added this to their dream for the school. At that time, they marked it at the lowest level because no action had been taken yet.
Since then, the school has cleaned a space and made a simple playground for the girls. Now, they can play there sometimes, but it still needs more improvements. In this assessment, teachers and students agreed that some progress had been made, so they marked it at a middle level. There is still more work to do, but the school has started moving in the right direction.
AER
For the final session, we conducted an AER. Each participant wrote two points on sticky notes—one about what went well and why, and another about what could be improved and how.
The session was a great experience for both students and teachers. Many enjoyed the activities, learned new things, and felt free to share their thoughts. They liked discussing their school, working together, and expressing ideas. The poetry and classroom discussions were also enjoyable. Teachers found the training helpful for better communication and classroom management. Overall, everyone felt the session was well-organized, educational, and interesting.
Some had suggestions for improvement. They thought it would be better if all students were present, if activities were more structured, or if there was more time for training. A few mentioned that some distractions made it hard to focus. Many participants said they would love to have more sessions like this in the future because it helps students and teachers understand each other and work better together.
The dream-building session at Joynagar High School was more than just a process; it was a step towards a future envisioned by both students and teachers. Seeing their alignment, engagement, and evolving perspectives reaffirmed our belief that true transformation happens when communities come together to dream, reflect, and act.
As we left the school that day, the students’ words, their artwork, and their dreams stayed with us. The journey to 2035 has begun, and with such determination and collective vision, there is no doubt that these dreams will one day become reality.
