GFC launched a new ARC project, under which we selected a few villages and planned to conduct qualitative interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) with specific individuals. My responsibility was to take notes.
In the beginning, I regularly took notes. However, after the third or fourth interview, I noticed a positive change in myself. I was not just listening; I was deeply understanding the emotions expressed by the person in front of me. Many times, respondents couldn’t fully articulate their thoughts in words, but I could sense their emotions. Beyond their words, I started understanding their expressions, the fluctuations in their voice, and the emotions in their eyes.
Whatever they shared, I could vividly visualize in my mind. I tried to capture not only their words but also their emotions and experiences as effectively as possible in my notes.
I would like to share a special experience. We went to Gadegondwadi to conduct an FGD with young people aged 20 to 25. The discussion took place in an open field, allowing them to express themselves freely. They shared their thoughts very openly. They had a strong desire to bring positive changes to their village, but they lacked proper direction and support. They had immense energy, but they needed guidance to channel it effectively.
From their conversation, I realized that they were not just thinking about their own well-being but were deeply concerned about the overall development of their village. Their eyes were full of dreams, but they needed support to turn those dreams into reality. Their words reflected deep concern about the future of both boys and girls in their community.
This interview was a particularly special experience for me. While understanding their emotions, I realized the importance of the SALT process. When our team starts working in this village, these young individuals are eager to collaborate with us. I firmly believe in their willingness, and with proper guidance, they can bring about significant change.
This entire process has greatly improved my ability to listen. It is not just about hearing words but about truly understanding the depth of a person’s thoughts and emotions. I believe this skill will be extremely valuable in the SALT process. When I start working directly in the community, this deep listening ability will definitely help me.
This experience has enhanced my communication and observation skills. I am confident that it will bring positive changes in both my personal life and my fieldwork. Now, I don’t just listen to people—I connect with them and understand their experiences. As a result, my conversations have become more meaningful and impactful.
I am deeply grateful to GFC for this invaluable learning opportunity. It has not only improved my professional skills but has also helped me become a more sensitive, understanding, and effective communicator.
