A youth sets an example of helping an older person

During a recent SALT session in the Basa Line area of Bhatpara Tea Garden, I had the privilege of meeting a young girl whose story of compassion and strength touched everyone present. Her experience reminded us how acts of kindness, even in the face of loss, can shape our confidence and build stronger communities.

Radhika shared that in December 2024, one of her neighbors—a kind elderly lady—had fallen seriously ill. Without hesitation, Radhika stepped forward to help. She accompanied the auntie to the hospital, ensuring that she received proper medical care. Over time, the woman’s health improved, and she began walking again. That moment filled Radhika with pride; she felt a deep sense of fulfillment knowing her efforts had made a difference.

However, sometime later, the lady fell ill again. Without losing courage, Radhika once more helped take her to the hospital. Sadly, despite all efforts, the woman passed away. The loss shook Radhika deeply, yet she still remembered the earlier moment when the auntie had recovered—a moment that symbolized her strength, empathy, and belief in herself. Her story embodies four powerful strengths:

Social responsibility – She took active initiative to help a neighbor in distress.Determination – She remained strong even in moments of difficulty.Self-belief – She appreciated her own efforts and took pride in doing the right thing.Commitment to service – She acted selflessly, without expecting anything in return.

As a SALT facilitator, I found this story truly inspiring. Radhika taught me that community service is not just about helping others—it is also about understanding one’s own capability and compassion. Through her actions, she showed that helping someone in need strengthens both the giver and the receiver.

Another meaningful lesson from her story was the value of resilience and acceptance. Even though life can be uncertain and full of changes, she demonstrated that we can choose to focus on the good we do, rather than the losses we face. Her positive spirit reminded us that pride and confidence grow out of sincere efforts made from the heart.

When I asked her what community means to her, she smiled and said, A community includes everyone—from children to elders. Our diversity makes us strong. When someone faces difficulty, we should all come together and help. Unity gives us the strength to solve any problem. Her sense of togetherness reflected the essence of SALT—learning from one another, supporting one another, and nurturing hope within communities.

AER (After Experience Reflection)

When asked what went well during our conversation, Radhika said she felt truly heard. “No one has spoken to me like this before,” she shared, adding that being able to express her story made her feel happy and valued.

As for what could have been better, she suggested that such conversations should also include parents, youth, and peers from her village so that the learning could spread further within the community.
