ছোট ও বড়দের সঙ্গে ম্যাস্কিউলিনিটি সল্ট: আমার অভিজ্ঞতা (My Experience of Doing Masculinity SALT with Children and Adults)

 বেশ কয়েক মাস যাবত ম্যাস্কিউলিনিটি নিয়ে কাজ করতে গিয়ে আমি একটি অভিজ্ঞতা অর্জন করেছি। কিছুদিন ধরে একিই দিনে প্রথমে আমি আমাদের কমিউনিটির একজন বড় সদস্য এবং পরে জয়নগর মাধ্যমিক বিদ্যালয়ের একজন ছোট শিক্ষার্থীর সঙ্গে ম্যাস্কিউলিনিটি সল্ট করি।

এই সময় আমি একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় উপলব্ধি করি— যখন আমরা ছোটদের সঙ্গে ম্যাস্কিউলিনিটি নিয়ে আলোচনা করি, তারা অনেক সময় বেশ ভালোভাবে প্রশ্নগুলো বুঝে উত্তর দিতে পারে। কিন্তু আবার অনেক সময় দেখা যায়, কিছু প্রশ্ন তাদের কাছে জটিল লাগে, ফলে তারা উত্তর দিতে দ্বিধা বোধ করে। এই অভিজ্ঞতার মধ্য দিয়ে আমি বুঝেছি, ছোটদের সঙ্গে ম্যাস্কিউলিনিটি সল্ট করার সময় আমাদের আরও সহজভাবে প্রশ্ন করতে হয়, যেন তারা ভালোভাবে বুঝতে পারে। প্রয়োজনে একটি প্রশ্নের পরিবর্তে কয়েকটি ছোট প্রশ্ন করা যেতে পারে, যাতে তারা ভাবতে পারে এবং উত্তর দিতে স্বাচ্ছন্দ্য বোধ করে। অনেক সময় গভীর প্রশ্ন করা কঠিন হয়ে যায়, তাই শিশুদের জন্য ভাষা ও প্রশ্নের ধরনকে সহজ রাখা খুব জরুরি। কিন্তু একটা জিনিস দেখলাম যে ম্যাস্কিউলিনিটি সল্ট করার পরে ছোটদের ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহারের পরিবর্তন খুব তাড়াতাড়ি আসে।  বড়দের সঙ্গে ম্যাস্কিউলিনিটি সল্ট করতে গিয়ে দেখি— তারা সহজেই প্রশ্নগুলোর অর্থ বুঝতে পারে এবং নিজেদের বাস্তব অভিজ্ঞতার আলোকে উত্তর দেয়। এতে আলোচনা আরও গভীর ও অর্থবহ হয়। কিন্তু বড়দের ক্ষেত্রে পরিবর্তন আসতে একটু সময় লাগে।

দিন শেষে আমি উপলব্ধি করেছি যে, ম্যাস্কিউলিনিটি শিক্ষা সব বয়সের মানুষের জন্যই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। কারণ, আমাদের সবার মধ্যেই সচেতনতা ও দৃষ্টিভঙ্গির পরিবর্তনের প্রয়োজন রয়েছে।

Over the past few months of working on masculinity, I have gained an important experience. For several days, on the same day, I conducted Masculinity SALT sessions — first with an elder member of our community, and later with a young student from Joynagar Secondary School.

During this time, I realized something significant — when we discuss masculinity with children, they can often understand the questions quite well and respond meaningfully. However, at times, some questions seem too complex to them, making them hesitate to answer. Through this experience, I understood that when facilitating a Masculinity SALT session with children, we need to ask questions in a simpler and clearer way so they can fully understand. If needed, instead of one big question, we can ask several smaller ones, allowing them to think and respond comfortably. Since deep questions can sometimes feel difficult for them, it’s very important to keep the language and question format easy and age-appropriate. What I also noticed is that after participating in Masculinity SALT, children tend to show behavioral changes quite quickly.

On the other hand, while conducting Masculinity SALT with adults, I observed that they easily grasp the meaning of the questions and answer based on their real-life experiences. This makes the discussions deeper and more meaningful — though the behavioral change in adults takes a bit more time.

At the end of the day, I have realized that masculinity education is important for people of all ages because every one of us needs awareness and a shift in perspective.
