নতুন বছরের ০৫ তারিখের ১ম সোমবার হিজলিপাড়াতে ছিল বছরের ১ম গল্পের আসর। ৩:৩০ এ গিয়ে দেখি সকলেই আসরের জন্য জড়ো হয়েছে। এমন মুহূর্তে আমাকে দেখে সুফিয়া কাকি এবং জাফর কাকা দুজনে রাগারাগি শুরু করে। কনকনে তীব্র শীতে কেন আমি বাড়ি থেকে বের হয়েছি? গল্পের আসর তো আমরা নিজেরাই করে ফেলতাম। এটা এখন আমরা ভুলি না। এ কথা বলতে বলতে তড়িঘড়ি করে উঠানের এক কোণে শুকনো আখের পাতা এবং আরো অনেক ডালপালা দিয়ে আগুন ধরিয়ে দেয়। তারই এক কোণে সবাই পাটিতে বসে গল্প শুনতে। সুফিয়া কাকি তার শৈশবের শীতের দিনগুলো কেমন অতিবাহিত করত সেই গল্পই বাচ্চাদের শোনায়। কাকির গল্প ছিল- তীব্র কনকনে শীতের সময় তার মা তাকে গরম কাপড় পরিয়ে বেতের তৈরি চাল মাপার সেরে মুড়ি এবং গুড় দিয়ে গরম চুলার পাশে বসিয়ে দিত। কাকি গুড় আর মুড়ি খেতো।সাথে মায়ের চুলার আগুন থেকে আগুন পোহাতো। বাচ্চারা কাকির গল্প শুনছিল সবাই মিলে। তারপর তারা পাটি ছেড়ে আগুনের চার পাশে গিয়ে দাঁড়ায় আগুন পোহাতে। তারা নিজেরাই আগুন নিয়ন্ত্রণ করে এবং জ্বালায় নেভায়। এই গল্পের আসরটা খুব স্বল্প সময় হয় এবং কাকি আমাকে আরো বকাবকি করে বাড়ি পাঠিয়ে দেয়। এই বকা দেওয়াটা আসলে আমাকে ভালোবাসারই বকা কারণ তারা চায় আমি যেন সুস্থ থাকি এবং তাদের সঙ্গ দিতে পারি। কমিউনিটির বাচ্চারা এবং অভিভাবকরা মিলে তারা তাদের ট্র্যাকারে হিসাব রাখছে। কারা কোন বাড়ি থেকে আসে। ১০ টি বাড়ি থেকে ৩১ জন লোক গল্পের আসরে উপস্থিত ছিল। এর মধ্যে ২০ জন শিশু, ৯ জন মা এবং ২ জন দাদী ছিল।শেষ মুহূর্তে একজন দাদাও উপস্থিত হয়েছিল। ক্যালেন্ডারে ঘর একে বাড়ি চিহ্নিত করে লাল টিপ পরিয়ে ছিল তাজমি, মিথিলা এবং মুনিয়া মিলে অনেকে। ধীরে ধীরে এই ট্র্যাকারের দায়িত্ব অভিভাবক থেকে ছোট ছোট ছেলে-মেয়েদের মাঝে ভাগ হয়ে যাচ্ছে। তারা নিজেরাই এই দায়িত্ব নিজেদের কাধে তুলে নিচ্ছে।

On the first Monday of the year, the 5th of the new year, the first story circle of the year was held in Hijlipara. When I arrived at 3:30, I saw that everyone had already gathered for the session. At that moment, seeing me, both Sufia Kaki and Jafar Kaka started scolding me. Why had I come out of the house in such biting cold? They said that they could have held the story circle by themselves—we wouldn’t forget it anymore. Saying this, they quickly lit a fire in one corner of the courtyard using dry sugarcane leaves and other twigs and branches. Everyone sat on mats nearby to listen to the stories.
Sufia Kaki shared a story from her childhood about how she spent winter days. In her story, during the harsh, freezing cold, her mother would dress her in warm clothes and give her puffed rice and molasses in a wicker tray used for measuring rice, then seat her beside the warm stove. She would eat the molasses and puffed rice while warming herself by the fire from her mother’s stove.
All the children listened to Kaki’s story together. After that, they left the mats and stood around the fire to warm themselves. They managed the fire on their own—adding fuel and putting it out when needed. The story circle was quite short, and Kaki scolded me again and sent me home. This scolding was actually an expression of love, because they want me to stay healthy and continue to keep them company.
The children and guardians of the community are jointly maintaining their tracker—keeping records of who comes from which household. A total of 31 people from 10 households attended the story circle. Among them were 20 children, 9 mothers, and 2 grandmothers. At the very end, one grandfather also joined.
On the calendar, houses were marked by drawing boxes and placing red dots, done collectively by Tajmi, Mithila, and Munia along with others. Gradually, the responsibility of maintaining this tracker is being shared from the guardians to the young children. They are taking this responsibility upon their own shoulders.
