A Reflection of Responsibility, Connection, and Community

Community engagement takes on deeper meaning when communities learn from and connect with one another. Recently, I had the opportunity to spend meaningful time with Alokito kori team and notably, Nishat Tasnim, Programme Coordinator of Alokito Kori. During her visit to ECDO and the communities ECDO works with particularly the Patro and Tea Garden communities. From the very beginning, her presence stood out.

At first, I assumed that her joyful and positive attitude was mainly influenced by SALT learning exchange, which naturally encourages openness and enthusiasm. However, as time passed, it became clear that her energy came from something deeper, her sincerity and genuine sense of responsibility. She carried her role with pride, and that sincerity reflected in every part of the visit, making even serious discussions feel engaging and warm.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the visit was the interaction between the Bede community members who accompanied Alokito Kori team and the communities ECDO serves. Their cooperation, curiosity, and openness showed that this was not just a formal visit it was a shared learning journey. The Alokito Kori team demonstrated genuine interest in understanding ECDO’s communities, and it felt as though they were connecting not as outsiders, but as fellow community members.

During the visit to the Patro community, this connection became especially visible. The children welcomed the visitors warmly and interacted with them with ease and closeness. Their comfort level was noticeably higher, and they eagerly engaged in conversations and activities. This interaction felt natural and heartfelt. If only organizational staff visit a community, interactions often remain limited and formal. But when people from one community visit another, the relationship becomes more open, trusting, and enthusiastic. This time, the community members did not just participate they eagerly waited for the visitors and embraced their presence.

The visit reminded me once again that development work is not only about programs and plans, but also about human connection, empathy, and shared experiences. Nishat apu’s sincerity and the community-to-community engagement made this visit truly impactful leaving behind lessons that will last far beyond the visit itself.
