Rafique,

What an excellent news to end the workweek with! And what a good timing. Trust you will invite Setu to Ning?

Take care,

Marlou

Dear All,

I spoke to Shekar Setu, the Project Director of the Transport Corporation India Foundation (TCIF).

He is very happy hearing about ACP, SALT visits, GLIA Initiative, India-Kenya Video Conference (VC) and Virtual SALT...and has said that he will get TCIF do the Video conference from their facility at Gurgaon, which is close to the Delhi border.

He has agreed to any day in the second week of November when we could have our first meeting with TCIF and TCI and plan for the India-Keny VC for second week of December.

So the dates are in agreement with what Marlou wrote, and the best part is I did not tell him any dates! These are what he suggested.

He also said that Mr. Shadab, a UN colleague of ours, is presently in charge of the NACO TCIF TSU will be taking over about 110 NACO truckers interventions in due course...
Also, that TCIF is spreading global and so he wants very much to tie up on the India Kenya VC and virtual SALT.

As Sekhar Setu is not on Ning, I will have to write a mail to Marlou with a copy to Sekhar Setu and all of those Marlou has written to in India-Kenya group.

With best regards,

Rafique

Hello all,

I have received some more information from GDLN (see in italics below).
Conclusion is that connection costs will be 205 USD for the conference, regardless of number of sites connected. So these costs can be split between the 2 countries.

If we could use the GDLN site in Nairobi this would cost 200 USD for a one hour connection, for Kenya.

In India we could use the Dimapur site that Father Joe had identified and possibly in addition the TCIF site that Rafique is working on. (price?? or offered for free??)

To be realistic and practical, and combining all earlier suggestions, I propose we could do 1 SALT visit prior to the videoconference in each site - within the limits of the budget and ideally combined with ongoing activities for GLIA (Mbugua?) and the UNDP project in Dimapur.

What do you think of following timeline now.

Remainder of October:
1. Finalise arrangements with video conferencing sites (Marlou and Onesmus for GDLN, Father Joe for the venue in Dimapur, Rafique for the venue at New Dehli).
2. Refine focus of the exchange at the Ning platform: all (Rituu, will you be interested in facilitating that discussion?).
3. Finalise budgets (Onesmus for Kenya; Rituu and father Joe for India).
4. Make funding available (Marlou and Lawan)
5. Work out SALT visit process note (Bobby coordinates).

November:
1. One SALT visit at each site with a focus on the identified topic for exchange (Onesmus and Mbugua organise in Kenya; father Joe in Dimapur, Rafique possibly in New Dehli).
2. Sharing of experience with SALT visit on Ning (Rituu facilitates)
3. Work out script for video conference (Marlou with Onesmus and Rituu)
4. Make all last local arrangements such as invitations to conference (Onesmus, father Joe, Rafique).

One day between 1-15 December:
VDO conference .

Will this work for all?

Look forward to hearing.. and progressing!

Marlou

3) It is indeed possible to connect to two sites in India provided that connection tests with the World Bank bridge have taken place and are successful.

a) The connection set up fee of $205 is regardless of the number of sites

b) You may indeed use the site in India that gives you free access but in Kenya it has to be the GDLN Center in Nairobi.

c) we can check with the Nairobi GDLN Center directly once we inform them about the event through our GDLN Event Management System (GEM)

Since I heard of the possibility of India-Kenya learning together, I explored the possibility of Video conferencing here in Dimapur (Nagaland). NIC informed me that there is a possibility provided we get permission from the National Centre at Delhi. It is an exciting possibility as we need not travel to another place.
waiting for further development on the subject..

Dear Team,

I have talked to Vibha Singh a colleague of mine who had worked with me in Transport Corporation of India Foundation (TCIF) as it's first M & E Officer, and she has promised to get us an appointment with the Head of TCI along with the Project Director of TCIF to present a 'taste of ACP' to them and get them enthused for the India-Kenya virtual SALT visits.

Vibha confirmed that there is Video conference facility in TCI and so all depends on how we present ACP to TCI, highlighting the Community strengths.

Vibha also informs me that the TCIF team had also visited CARE Bangladesh to study the truckers intervention in the country.

So, I will be writing to Vibha with a copy to our team members, apart from inviting her to join us on Ning.

With regards,

Rafique

Dear Team,
The networks of truckers and PLHAs will be gathering in Bujumbura Burundi for a planning meeting that seeks to strengthen and complete the remaining part of the ACP in the welfare centres. I will follow up with Mbugua on the outcomes to see how we can integrate that into their action plans that will run upto 2010. So thats subject to confirmation.

On the other hand, the quotation i got from the local service provider was 200 USD for one hour plus 205 USD for bridging. That makes a total of 405 dollars.
The above cost does not include transport to the centre which is out of the Nairobi CBD.

In some way, i got stuck because the basics like SALT visits may not get sufficient allocation.
How do we then supplement becomes my question putting into our minds of the schedule for this initiative?

Regards

Onesmus
