Dear Friends,

My heartfelt thanks for the responses received on Truckers and HIV. It has been a good learning as new experiences, compelling stories and exciting tools are unfolded.

I would like to inform that People in Need foundation (PNF) team from Nagaland recently attended the TCIF training which Mr Shekar has mentioned. Fr. Joe from PNF shared that he had attended similar trainings before but found this a more consultative process. He will soon share his experience on Ning.

PNF team has been applying ACP with general communities. However, in the ACP event scheduled next week at Dimapur in Nagaland, community visits will be done with trucker drivers.

I am enjoying the Truck journey, are you?

Cheers,

Rituu

PS: I look forward to more stories from Kenya and India.

Dear All

Happy to share that TCIF with the NACO Mandate just concluded the the first phase of training of around 40 interventions run by the SACS( state aids control society) In the next one month over a 100 NGO's and associations and almost 3000 people would have been trained on BCC, prevention and care and support. These include Peers, Doctors, Outreach staff and nurses and counsellors. This is the the largest and most ambitious truckers project in India.

Dear All,

Thank you for initiating this important dialogue to share experiences on HIV interventions with truck drivers in an India-Kenya context.

We have been working with truck drivers (and allied community members) on HIV and STI risk and vulnerability reduction using a number of dialogue-based methods. Some of these methods include interpersonal communication and a form of participatory theatre called "magnet theatre" (MT). You can read more about this form of theatre here: http://chp.community.officelive.com/Documents/Theatre%20for%20Dialo...

In fact, a dear friend and colleague Madiang, based at PATH in Kenya is a master trainer in magnet theatre and is one of the key trainers of the truck driver community we work with here in Delhi. Members of the community have now taken up MT on their own; and continue to conduct performances across Delhi and at Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar (SGTN) where some of our trained MT peformers and CHP's team members are based. In fact, I will post details inviting all of you to the next MT performance in Delhi.

MT is a great way to bring to the surface issues close to the community, which may not even come out of conscious dialogue. One very interesting finding made through MT performances and dialogue within the community during and after MT, is that male-to-male sex is very common among truck drivers; in fact MSM activity is very common among the ustaad (driver) and chotu (helper). What makes this behaviour difficult to identify is that truck drivers themselves do not consider this sexual or MSM activity.

I look forward to continuing this important dialogue initiated on AIDSCOMPETENCE.

Ash

Dear Associates,

I started working in this field I took it at Holistic Level and worked according to my education, resources, knowledge, experience etc. It’s very good idea of virtual exchange between India and Kenya, we always find same kind of human beings they may differs with space, time and situation.

We frequently organized HI/AIDS awareness and STI/RTI treatment camp with truckers with the support of many organizations in north India and find due to mobility they are not able to get complete treatment for STI/RTI, therefore there must be treatment e-card so that where ever they visit get continues treatment. We know most of truck drivers in India are from Punjab and almost illiterate there for we may provide them IEC material in the language they understand. I am not biased with other people; my submission is that there must be handy IEC material which truck drivers can understand they belong to any region.

Dear Friends,

Population Council
study suggests that a large number of truckers engage in MSM sexual activity in India. I quote from the study "Truckers have fewer contacts with female sex workers. Their involvement in MSM activities has increased. These changes appear to be a result of interventions which have placed a heavy emphasis on female sex workers as the primary sources for the spread of HIV infection. Furthermore, there has been an increase in condom use among female sex workers and a perceived reduction in pleasure through heterosexual contact when condoms are used."

The Humsafar Trust
, is a CBO on sexual health and MSM/TG in India. In its 'Shaan Project' with truckers the CBO found male sex workers at all six major truck stops in Mumbai and on its municipal outskirts. The truckers shared that nearly 30 percent of sex work is in MSM sector and areas which are not well lit and unsafe for woman in sex work , male sex work is considerably larger and around 50 percent of total sex interactions.

What is your experience in this context?

Thanks and regards,

Rituu
