NEW DELHI | Fri Jan 7, 2011 2:48pm IST

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Crimes against women in New Delhi soared last year with a rape reported every day on average, local media said on Friday citing data released by police.

The number of rape cases reported in the Indian capital went up to 489 last year, up from 459 in 2009, while cases of molestation rose by a tenth to 585.

"A woman is raped every 18 hrs in Delhi," said a headline in the Mail Today.

The crime rate is expected to go up in 2010 with police encouraging higher registration of cases, Delhi Police chief B.K. Gupta was quoted as saying by the daily.

Crimes against women in particular are under-reported throughout India as a largely conservative society often blames the victim.

Only 6 percent of cases of rape and molestation involved strangers, the accused being known to the victims in the rest.

Crimes against women rise; 25 per cent of rapes in Delhi

January 21st, 2011

New Delhi: There has been a rise in crimes against women in India, with the national capital recording nearly 25 per cent of all rape cases, reveals data by the National Crime Records Bureau for the year 2009.

As compared to 2008, there was a rise of 4.1 per cent in the number of crimes against women in the country. In 2008, a total of 195,856 cases were reported. This rose to 203,804 in 2009.

Crimes against women include rape, kidnapping and abduction, dowry death, torture, molestation, sexual harassment, importation of girls, immoral traffic and indecent representation of women.

Delhi accounted for nearly a quarter of all rape cases registered in the country. According to the NCRB, 23.8 per cent of all rape cases were registered here.

Also, 38.9 per cent of kidnapping and abduction cases, 15.2 per cent of dowry deaths and 14.1 per cent of molestation cases among 35 cities in India have been reported in Delhi.

While the total number of cases of crimes against women had seen a rise in 2009, there was a drop in certain cases. For instance, as compared to 2008, in 2009 there was a drop of three percent in rape cases, 4.2 per cent in molestation cases, 9.9 per cent in sexual harassment cases and 17.6 per cent in indecent representation of women.

Dear friends, thanks for joining this group. Gender based violence is a concern for everyone who is here. week policing, lack of implementation of laws and mentality and perception are some of the reason behind the rise in Gender Based violence. It is not only outside homes, but inside one`s own home, which should be the most safe place, that the maximum violence is perpetuated.

Not to forget that the most safe place on earth- THE MOTHER`S WOMB has also become a unsafe place, and a place for increasing Gender based Violence. More than 7000 daughters are killed in India alone everyday before they even take their first breath. When even mother`s womb has become unsafe because of the gender of the baby - where does one feel safe ???

I hope we can and we will bring about a change....
