How Child Marriage Was Prevented in Munshiganj through the SALT Approach - SALT এর মাধ্যমে যেভাবে মুন্সিগঞ্জে বাল্যবিবাহ বন্ধ হয়েছে

মুন্সিগঞ্জের বেদে কমিউনিটিতে শুরু থেকেই বাল্যবিবাহের প্রচলন রয়েছে। এইখানে মেয়েদের ১২/১৩ বছর হলেই তারা প্রাপ্ত বয়স্ক মনে করেন এবং বিয়ে দিয়ে দেন। অনেকদিন আগে থেকেই আমরা বিভিন্নভাবে বাল্যবিবাহ আটকানোর চেষ্টা করেছি কিন্তু কোনো ফলাফল আসেনি।

অবশেষে মুন্সিগঞ্জ বেদে কমিউনিটিতে আমাদের Alokito kori টিম GFC ফান্ডেড ARC ইনিশিয়েটিভ এর SALT এপ্রোচ শুরু করি। ব্যাক্তিগত SALT এর মাধ্যমে কিশোর-কিশোরীর বাবা মায়েদের চিহ্নিত করি এবং তাদের বিয়ে দেওয়ার কারণ জানতে পারি।

এরপর চিহ্নিত করা মায়েদের নিয়ে Group SALT করি তারা নিজেরাই আলোচনা করতে শুরু করে কিভাবে এই সমস্যা সমাধান করা যায়। তারা মূলত টাকার অভাবে পড়াশোনা করাতে না পারার কারনেই কমিউনিটির পরিবারগুলো ছেলেমেয়েদের বিয়ে দিয়ে দিচ্ছিলো। সকলের মতামত অনুযায়ী উঠে আসে সকল মায়েরা মালখানগর হাই স্কুলে যাবে প্রধান শিক্ষক এর সাথে কথা বলতে যাবেন। হাই স্কুল থেকে যদি সহায়তা পায় তাহলে তারা ছেলে মেয়েদের বিয়ে না দিয়ে পড়াশোনা করাবে।

আমরা প্রধান শিক্ষক এর সাথে কথা বলে সকল মায়েদের সাথে মিটিং ফিক্সড করে দেই। তারা প্রধান শিক্ষককে তাদের সমস্যার কথা জানান এবং প্রধান শিক্ষক তাদের কথায় অনুপ্রাণিত হয়ে কথা দেন তাদের ছেলেমেয়েরা মালখানগর হাই স্কুলে বিনা বেতনে পড়াশোনা করতে পারবে।

২ জানুয়ারি ২০২৫ তারিখে আমাদের কমিউনিটির ৮ জন শিক্ষার্থী মালখানগর হাই স্কুলে ভর্তি হয়।
এইভাবেই ARC ইনিশিয়েটিভ এর SALT এপ্রোচ এর মাধ্যমে মুন্সিগঞ্জ কমিউনিটিতে ৮ জন শিক্ষার্থী স্কুলে ফিরে আসে।

Child marriage was once considered normal in the Bede community of Munshiganj. Girls as young as 12 or 13 were seen as ready for marriage. Although previous efforts were made to stop child marriage, they had no impact.

Eventually, the Alokito Kori team began engaging the community through the SALT approach for the Addressing Root Causes (ARC) initiative, funded by the Global Fund for Children. Through individual SALT conversations, we identified parents of adolescents and learned the real reasons behind child marriage.

We then facilitated Group SALT sessions with mothers, where they openly discussed the root causes—mainly financial struggles and explored possible solutions together. They decided to visit Malkhanagar High School to advocate for full-free studentships. If they received support from the school, they would continue their children’s education instead of arranging early marriages.

The mothers met with the Headmaster, shared their challenges, and expressed their determination to keep their children in school. Inspired by their efforts, the Headmaster committed to providing free education.

As a result, on January 2, 2025, eight students from the Bede community were admitted to the school. This marked a meaningful step in preventing child marriage through the collective strength built by the SALT approach.
