A Celebration of Modhumash,Children's Joy, and Community Learning

Laughter filled the air as children eagerly tasted colourful local fruits and elders shared stories of traditional fruit varieties.28 June 2026, Patro Community brought these joyful moments to life by organizing a Fruit Festival for Patro indigenous chiulodren of Alaibahar, Khadimnagar, Sylhet.

In Bangladesh, “Modhumash” literally meaning "the Honey Month" refers to the joyful summer season when a wide variety of delicious & sweet local fruits ripen, bringing abundance, colour, and celebration to communities. More than a seasonal celebration, the festival was a vibrant reminder that every community possesses valuable strengths worth celebrating. Guided by the principles of SALT (Stimulate, Appreciate, Learn, and Transfer), the event created a space where community members recognized and appreciated the assets they already have their local fruit varieties, and most importantly, their collective spirit.

The festival was truly community-led. From planning the event to coordinating activities, community members worked together with enthusiasm and a strong sense of ownership. Children became the heart of the celebration as they explored, tasted, and learned about different locally grown fruits. Their excitement sparked conversations among parents, elders, and youth, transforming the festival into a joyful learning experience where knowledge was shared naturally across generations.

For ECDO, the role was not to lead the event but to walk alongside the community. By facilitating the process rather than directing it, ECDO supported local leadership, encouraged participation, and created opportunities for collaboration and shared learning.

One of the festival's greatest achievements was the happiness it created. As elders, women, youth, and children gathered around colourful displays of seasonal fruits, they celebrated not only nature's abundance but also the power of togetherness. The event strengthened relationships, nurtured children's curiosity, and encouraged a deeper appreciation of local fruit varieties and the knowledge that has been passed down through generations. Community celebrations by this Festival remind us that when people come together to appreciate their strengths, share their knowledge, and care for one another, they lay the foundation for a more confident, resilient, and thriving future.
