Today, I had a salt session with the masculinity group in the Penchakola community. Everyone spoke very beautifully about their lives. It was painful to listen to some, and to others, I felt that we can bring about big changes by making small changes.
Nur Nahar Apa said, in our village, more attention is still paid to the education of boys. Everyone thinks that boys will grow up to run the family, so they need to be educated more. But girls are also human beings. They also have dreams. If they get the opportunity, they can go far. So both boys and girls should be given equal opportunities to study.
Ayesha Khatun Apa said, most of the decisions regarding the family's money are made by husbands. Because they are the ones who earn the income. So if you buy something without talking to them, you often end up in a fight. She said, the family does not belong to one person, but to two. So if you talk to them and decide on everything, there is peace in the family.
She also said, many times children want something. Seeing their tears, their mothers buy it for them. Later, there is unrest in the family about this. So it is very important to talk to each other and make decisions.
Amina Khatun Apa said, we also hear a lot of talk about clothes in our society. Even if we wear a shirt for comfort on a hot day, many people say, “Why are you dressed like a boy?” These things make a person upset. In fact, what clothes someone wears is a matter of their own comfort. It is not right to belittle anyone about this.
From today's discussion, I understood that masculinity does not mean belittling anyone or imposing your opinion. Rather, men and women will respect each other, take all family decisions together, give equal opportunities to boys and girls, and stand by each other—this is true positive change.
At the end of today's group salt, everyone said that change should not start with others, but with our own family. I believe that if we follow these small things, then our family, our community, and our society will become more beautiful one day.
