SALT and Facilitation: Patience, Humility, and the Mirror of Change

By SALT we understand Support, Appreciate, Learn, and Transfer.

And by a facilitator we generally mean a supportive guide someone who does not give instructions but creates space for everyone to speak and keeps the discussion on the right track.

However, some important ideas are embedded within SALT and facilitation. In my view, SALT is both a mirror and a tool for reflection. Just as standing in front of a mirror allows a person to see themselves, practicing the SALT approach properly enables people to see themselves. And the person who applies this approach must possess great patience and humility. Holding up a mirror in front of someone is not easy. It requires deep attentiveness. That is why humility and patience are essential.

Yes, we the Arshirbad team have gone through this process as SALT facilitators. Our organization works with socially marginalized Dalit and Harijan communities. These groups are separated from the mainstream of society and therefore run their social lives in their own ways. They have their own cultures, religious practices, and social customs. In particular, in Harijan communities, social rules are governed through the panchayat system. All forms of justice and social decision making are handled by the panchayat. There are no female representatives in these bodies. If women face any social problem, the panchayat leaders resolve it. The presence of women in the panchayat is considered disrespectful. Women are looked down upon, and they themselves never raise their voices against this practice. They accept every decision made by the panchayat.

When Arshirbad Organization first began working in Harijan communities, the panchayat leaders were not pleased. There were two main reasons for this: first, Arshirbad is a women led organization; second, the panchayat leaders believed that no one should work in the Harijan community without their permission. Arshirbad is a community based organization that works on the social and economic empowerment of women. This was something the panchayat leaders did not like at all. They were always resistant to our work. They would say, “What work will these women do? They cannot do anything.” They were constantly looking for faults. Even after repeated explanations, they claimed that the panchayat did not know about Arshirbad’s work. We feared that if we formally asked the panchayat for permission through a letter, they might stop our work, considering women’s empowerment an insult to the panchayat.

However, their thinking began to change after Arshirbad received GFC funding and organized an orientation meeting for the entire community using the SALT and CLCP approaches. Panchayat leaders, stakeholders, and all community members were present. Community people praised Arshirbad’s work highly and assured their cooperation.

After that, our facilitators started SALT conversations in everyone’s homes. But the panchayat leader himself was still not very satisfied. Whenever we tried to invite him, he avoided us. He would tell others in the community that Ashirbad did nothing, that we only sent facilitators door to door to talk. SALT conversations seemed to him like meaningless storytelling.

One day I told one of our facilitators to go to the panchayat leader’s house and have a conversation with him. The facilitator went many times and held two or three SALT conversations with him, but the leader remained stuck in his pride. Somewhere my own ego was also hurt why should we keep going again and again? I discussed this with Ritu, who embodies SALT in her heart and soul, who is truly humble and kind. She told me that I should speak with the panchayat leader myself.

I told Ritu that I would do so, but my ego was holding me back. I kept thinking about a verse from the Bible: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” But it was difficult for me. Although I am a believer, I kept praying. I wanted to become a humble and patient SALT facilitator. So I forgot my ego and began speaking to the panchayat leader. Wherever I saw him, I would approach him and talk. I invited him to our office and programs. With much patience and humility, the Arshirbad team continued moving forward.

One day Arshirbad’s document officer and male facilitator, Abir, had a conversation with the panchayat leader that was very positive. Abir had gone to him many times before and had been turned away, but this time it was different. After discussing it, Abir and I decided that during Puja we would exchange greetings with the community leaders and create a video document about their festival so that relationships would become more beautiful.

SALT conversations took place with everyone, including the panchayat leader. They invited Abir to the Puja, which was what we had hoped for. During Puja, for the first time, community youth leaders came to our office to deliver invitations. Later we invited them to join a learning visit. The panchayat leader was very happy. For the first time, he spoke directly with me face to face. He sent other panchayat representatives on the learning visit with us.

I thanked God with gratitude for helping me love my neighbor as myself. I silently thanked Ritu for giving me strength and encouragement. It felt as though my journey as a SALT facilitator had truly begun although I had been doing this work for a long time, my patience and humility as a SALT facilitator had been limited.

On 1 January 2026, the panchayat leaders were invited to the Arshirbad office. For the first time, the panchayat leader came to our office and praised our work. He discussed and appreciated the SALT and CLCP approaches. He requested that we sit in the panchayat.

As a woman, this was a moment of pride and joy for me. For the first time, the panchayat leader allowed a woman to enter their panchayat office.

At the beginning I said that SALT is a mirror. What is in your heart becomes visible to you, and you can discover your strengths as well as remove your weaknesses. Therefore, as a SALT facilitator, you must always carry patience and humility.

SALT ফেসিলিটেশন: ধৈর্য, নম্রতা ও পরিবর্তনের আয়না
SALT বলতে আমরা যা বুঝি Support, Appreciate, Learn, Transfer।
আর একজন ফেসিলেটর হলেন সেই সহযোগী পথপ্রদর্শক, যিনি নির্দেশ দেন না; বরং সবাইকে কথা বলার সুযোগ করে দেন এবং আলোচনাকে সঠিক পথে এগিয়ে নিয়ে যান।
আমার দৃষ্টিতে, SALT শুধুই একটি পদ্ধতি নয় এটি এক ধরনের আয়না ও আত্মঅনুধ্যানের যন্ত্র। যেমন আয়নার সামনে দাঁড়ালে মানুষ নিজেকে দেখতে পায়, তেমনি সঠিক SALT এপ্রোচ প্রয়োগ করলে মানুষ নিজের শক্তি ও দুর্বলতা দুটোই চিনতে পারে।
আর যিনি এই আয়নাটি মানুষের সামনে ধরবেন অর্থাৎ একজন SALT ফেসিলেটর তার সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ গুণ হলো ধৈর্য ও নম্রতা।
কারণ কাউকে নিজের ভেতরের সত্য দেখাতে সাহায্য করা সহজ কাজ নয়। এর জন্য দরকার গভীর মনোযোগ, সহানুভূতি এবং বিনয়।
হরিজন কমিউনিটিতে কাজের বাস্তবতা
আমরা আশির্বাদ টিম দীর্ঘদিন ধরে সমাজের পিছিয়ে পড়া প্রান্তিক দলিত ও হরিজন জনগোষ্ঠীর সঙ্গে কাজ করছি। এই জনগোষ্ঠী সমাজের মূল স্রোতধারা থেকে অনেকাংশেই বিচ্ছিন্ন। তাদের নিজস্ব সংস্কৃতি, ধর্মীয় আচার ও সামাজিক নিয়ম রয়েছে।
বিশেষভাবে হরিজন কমিউনিটিতে সামাজিক সিদ্ধান্ত ও বিচারব্যবস্থা পরিচালিত হয় পঞ্চায়েত প্রথার মাধ্যমে। সেখানে নারীদের কোনো প্রতিনিধিত্ব নেই। নারীদের উপস্থিতি পঞ্চায়েতের অসম্মান হিসেবে বিবেচিত হয় এবং নারীরা নিজেরাও দীর্ঘদিন ধরে এই প্রথার বিরুদ্ধে আওয়াজ তোলেননি।
এমন প্রেক্ষাপটে আশির্বাদ একটি নারী নেতৃত্বাধীন কমিউনিটি বেইজড অর্গানাইজেশন যখন নারী ক্ষমতায়নের কাজ শুরু করে, তখন পঞ্চায়েত লিডারদের আপত্তি থাকা স্বাভাবিকই ছিল।
তাদের ধারণা ছিল, পঞ্চায়েতের অনুমতি ছাড়া কেউ এই কমিউনিটিতে কাজ করতে পারবে না।
তারা প্রায়ই বলতেন
“এই নারীরা কী করবে? কিছুই তো পারবে না।”
আমাদের ফেসিলেটররা ঘরে ঘরে গিয়ে SALT কথোপকথন করলেও সেটিকে তারা গুরুত্ব দিতেন না; বরং বলতেন, আমরা শুধু গল্প করছি, কিছু দিচ্ছি না।
SALT-এর পথে অহংকার ভাঙার শিক্ষা
এক পর্যায়ে আমি আমাদের এক ফেসিলেটর কে বললাম, তিনি যেন পঞ্চায়েত লিডারের সঙ্গে সরাসরি কথোপকথন করেন। বহুবার চেষ্টা করেও তেমন সাড়া পাওয়া যায়নি।
সত্য বলতে কী, তখন কোথাও যেন আমার নিজের ভেতরের অহংকারও বাধা হয়ে দাঁড়াচ্ছিল
“আমরাই বা কেন বারবার যাব?”
এই বিষয়টি আমি রিতুর সঙ্গে আলোচনা করি যিনি SALT দর্শনকে মনেপ্রাণে ধারণ করেন, যিনি সত্যিকার অর্থেই নম্র ও হৃদয়বান। তিনি আমাকে উৎসাহ দিয়ে বললেন, আমিই যেন পঞ্চায়েত লিডারের সঙ্গে কথা বলি।
আমি তখন নিজের বিশ্বাসের একটি বাক্য মনে করছিলাম
“তুমি তোমার প্রতিবেশীকে নিজের মতো ভালোবাসো।”
সহজ ছিল না। তবু আমি প্রার্থনা করছিলাম আমি যেন একজন ধৈর্যশীল ও নম্র SALT ফেসিলেটর হতে পারি।
অবশেষে নিজের ইগোকে পাশে রেখে আমি পঞ্চায়েত লিডারের সঙ্গে নিয়মিত কথা বলা শুরু করলাম। যেখানে দেখতাম, সামনে গিয়ে কথা বলতাম; অফিস ও বিভিন্ন প্রোগ্রামে আমন্ত্রণ জানাতাম।
ধৈর্য আর নম্রতা নিয়েই আশির্বাদ টিম এগিয়ে যেতে থাকলো।
সম্পর্ক বদলের মুহূর্ত
একদিন আমাদের ডকুমেন্ট অফিসার ও মেইল ফেসিলেটর আবির পঞ্চায়েত লিডারের সঙ্গে একটি অত্যন্ত ইতিবাচক SALT কথোপকথন করেন। এর আগেও তিনি বহুবার চেষ্টা করেছিলেন, কিন্তু তখন ফিরিয়ে দেওয়া হয়েছিল।
এইবার পরিস্থিতি ভিন্ন ছিল।
আমরা সিদ্ধান্ত নিলাম পূজার সময় কমিউনিটি লিডারদের সঙ্গে শুভেচ্ছা বিনিময় করবো, তাদের উৎসব নিয়ে ভিডিও ডকুমেন্টেশন করবো যাতে সম্পর্ক আরও দৃঢ় হয়।
পঞ্চায়েত লিডারসহ অনেকেই এতে সাড়া দিলেন। আবিরকে পূজার আমন্ত্রণ জানানো হলো।
প্রথমবারের মতো কমিউনিটির যুব লিডাররা আমাদের অফিসে এসে দাওয়াত দিয়ে গেলেন।
পরবর্তীতে আমরা পঞ্চায়েত লিডার ও অন্য প্রতিনিধিদের একটি লার্নিং ভিজিটে আমন্ত্রণ জানাই। তিনি আনন্দের সঙ্গে রাজি হন এবং অন্য লিডারদের পাঠান।
সেদিন আমি ঈশ্বরের প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করি এবং রিতুকে মনে মনে ধন্যবাদ জানাই যিনি আমাকে শক্তি ও সাহস জুগিয়েছিলেন।
নারী হিসেবে এক ঐতিহাসিক মুহূর্ত
১ জানুয়ারি ২০২৬ সালে আশির্বাদ অফিসে পঞ্চায়েত প্রতিনিধিদের আমন্ত্রণ জানানো হয়। এই প্রথমবার পঞ্চায়েত লিডার আমাদের অফিসে এসে আমাদের কাজের প্রশংসা করেন এবং SALT ও CLCP এপ্রোচ নিয়ে আলোচনা করেন।
তিনি আমাদের পঞ্চায়েত সভায় অংশ নেওয়ার অনুরোধও জানান।
একজন নারী হিসেবে এটি ছিল আমার জন্য গভীর গর্ব ও আনন্দের মুহূর্ত
কারণ এই প্রথম কোনো নারীকে পঞ্চায়েত কার্যালয়ে যাওয়ার অনুমতি দেওয়া হলো।
শেষ কথা
শুরুতেই আমি বলেছি SALT হলো আয়না।
এটি মানুষের হৃদয়ে থাকা সত্যকে সামনে নিয়ে আসে। এতে মানুষ যেমন নিজের শক্তি খুঁজে পায়, তেমনি দুর্বলতাও বুঝতে পারে এবং তা দূর করার পথ খোঁজে।
তাই একজন SALT ফেসিলেটরের জন্য ধৈর্য ও নম্রতা কোনো বিকল্প নয় এটাই তার সবচেয়ে বড় শক্তি।
এই যাত্রায় আমি নতুন করে বুঝেছি আমি বহুদিন ধরেই SALT ফেসিলেটর হিসেবে কাজ করছিলাম, কিন্তু সত্যিকার অর্থে এখনই সেই পথে যাত্রা শুরু করলাম।
