SALT's initiative to host a storytelling session for the elders of the Pechakola community: Revisiting the light of memory

Once upon a time, the stories of the elders of the Pechakola community about their childhood, adolescence, or life struggles were silently suppressed. That's why at our Knowledge Fair, Grow Your Reader shared the story of their grandparents in the Byaspur community. From there, the members of our Pechakola community's Tia Dal started working with the elders in their community, inspired by that story session. Although the elders told a few stories to their families, they did not have the opportunity to present them to the wider community. However, these stories contain great lessons in life, the continuity of culture, and the precious gems of each generation's experience.

SALT has changed this reality. SALT, whose main goal is to create an environment for learning by presenting people's stories, has now opened a new window for the elders to open a free platform for storytelling. Hena Grandmother shared her life story with the youth. Hena Grandmother was married at a young age. Hena Grandmother said that in our time, the in-laws were very strict. They had to obey whatever they ordered. There was no freedom for the boys and girls. They didn't even give them food properly. There was no one to listen to their pain. When they told their parents, they would say that they had to accept all this in the next house and we have endured all this a lot. While talking about this, Hena Grandmother's voice came to mind. She remembered the difficult days of her past. But through Salt, Grandmother taught the youth from her life that you are a priceless asset for the new generation. In this discussion organized by Salt, the elders of Pechakola went back to their childhood days those mud-covered games, the simplicity of village life surrounded by rivers and canals, the strength to live together despite poverty and hardship, and the life lessons that guide them even today.

Each memory in the grandmother's voice is like a history. For the new generation, these are not just stories they are learning materials, a source of identity, and a foundation for building values.

Community elders often do not have the space or courage to express their stories.

SALT removed that limitation by creating a safe environment where their stories are listened to with importance

by building connections between generations by preserving the historical and cultural memories of the community

and by letting everyone know that the power of stories can change people.

This platform honors elders, recognizing their experiences as the 'capital' of society.

The discussion meeting was not just a place to listen to stories, but also took the form of an emotional gathering.

Those who had never stood in front of the stage that day also openly spoke about the turning point in their lives, the experience of learning from mistakes, their contribution to building families and society, and their best wishes for the next generation. Through this discussion, the elders realized anew that their stories have value, that their voices have the right to be heard. The way SALT is spreading the power of stories is not just about organizing meetings, but also working to perpetuate the culture of storytelling by spreading them across the community

creating archives for future generations and turning people's personal journeys into learning materials for society

In this way, stories are becoming a bridge between collective knowledge and human connection.

This discussion meeting of the grandmothers of the Penchakola community is not just an event

It is a warm union of the past with the present, and the present with the future.

SALT has proven that every person's story is valuable when given the right platform, and every story teaches.

একসময় পেঁচাকোলা কমিউনিটির প্রবীণদের শৈশব, কৈশোর কিংবা জীবনের লড়াই সংগ্রামের গল্পগুলো নিঃশব্দে চাপা পড়ে যেতো। তাইতো আমাদের নলেজ ফেয়ারে গ্রো ইওর রিডার তাদের ব্যাসপুর কমিউনিটির দাদা দাদীর গল্পের আসরের কথা ব্যক্ত করেন। সেখান থেকে আমাদের পেচাকোলা কমিউনিটির টিয়া দলের সদস্যরা ওই গল্পের আসর থেকে অনুপ্রাণিত হয়ে প্রবীনদের নিয়ে তাদের কমিউনিটিতে কাজটা শুরু করেন । প্রবীনদের এই উদ্যোগের গল্প পরিবারের কাছে দু’একটা গল্প বলা হলেও সেগুলোকে বৃহত্তর কমিউনিটির সামনে তুলে ধরার সুযোগ ছিল না। অথচ এই গল্পগুলোর ভেতরে লুকিয়ে আছে জীবনের বড় শিক্ষা, সংস্কৃতির ধারাবাহিকতা এবং একেকটি প্রজন্মের অভিজ্ঞতার মূল্যবান রত্ন।

এই বাস্তবতাকে বদলে দিয়েছে সল্ট। মানুষের গল্প তুলে ধরে শেখার পরিবেশ তৈরি করাই যাদের মূল লক্ষ্য, সেই সল্ট এবার প্রবীণদের জন্য খুলে দিল একটি নতুন জানালা গল্প বলার মুক্ত মঞ্চ। হেনা  

দাদী তার জীবনের গল্প শেয়ার করলো তরুণদের মাঝে।হেনা দাদীর বাল্যবিবাহ হয়।হেনা দাদী বলেন আমাদের সময় শশুর শাশুড়ি ছিল খুব প্রখর প্রকৃতির। তারা যা আদেশ করত তাই মানতে হতো।কোনো স্বাধীনতা ছিলো না ছেলে বৌদের।

খাবার ও দিতো না ভালো ভাবে। তাদের মনের কষ্ট শোনার কেউ ছিলো না। বাবা মা কে বললে বলতো পরের বাড়ীতে এসব মেনে নিতে হয় আমরা ও এসব সহ্য করেছি অনেক। এই কথা বলতে গিয়ে হেনা দাদীর কণ্ঠস্বর ধরে আসে। মনে পড়ে যায় তার অতীতের কষ্টের দিনগুলো। কিন্তু সল্টের মাধ্যমে দাদী তার জীবন থেকে

 শিক্ষা নিয়ে তরুণদের মাঝে বলেন তোমরা নতুন প্রজন্মের জন্য অমূল্য সম্পদ সল্টের আয়োজিত এই আলোচনা সভায় পেঁচাকোলার প্রবীণরা ফিরে গেলেন তাদের ছোটবেলার দিনগুলিতে—

সেই কাদামাটি মাখা খেলাধুলা, নদী–নালা ঘেরা গ্রামজীবনের সহজ–সরলতা,

অভাব–অনটনের মধ্যেও মিলেমিশে বেঁচে থাকার শক্তি,

আর জীবনের শিক্ষা যেগুলো আজও তাদের পথ দেখায়।

দাদীর কণ্ঠের প্রতিটি স্মৃতি যেন একেকটি ইতিহাস। নতুন প্রজন্মের জন্য এগুলো শুধু গল্প নয়—শেখার উপাদান, পরিচয়ের উৎস এবং মূল্যবোধ গড়ার ভিত্তি।

কমিউনিটির প্রবীণরা অনেক সময় নিজেদের গল্প প্রকাশ করার মতো জায়গা বা সাহস পান না।

সল্ট সেই সীমাবদ্ধতাকে দূর করলো—

তাদের গল্পগুলোকে গুরুত্ব দিয়ে শোনার মতো একটি নিরাপদ পরিবেশ তৈরি করে

প্রজন্মের মাঝে যোগসূত্র গড়ে তুলে

কমিউনিটির ঐতিহাসিক ও সাংস্কৃতিক স্মৃতি সংরক্ষণ করে

এবং সবাইকে জানিয়ে দেয় গল্পের শক্তি মানুষকে বদলে দিতে পারে।

এই মঞ্চ প্রবীণদের সম্মান দেয়, তাদের অভিজ্ঞতাকে সমাজের ‘পুঁজি’ হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি দেয়।

আলোচনা সভা শুধু গল্প শোনার জায়গা নয়, বরং একটি আবেগী মিলনমেলার রূপ নিয়েছিল।

যারা কখনো মঞ্চের সামনে দাঁড়াননি, তারাও সেদিন খোলাখুলি বললেন জীবনের বাঁক বদলের মুহূর্ত ভুল থেকে শেখার অভিজ্ঞতা পরিবার ও সমাজ গঠনে তাদের অবদান এবং পরবর্তী প্রজন্মের জন্য শুভকামনা এই আলোচনার মাধ্যমে প্রবীণরা যেন নতুনভাবে উপলব্ধি করলেন তাদের গল্পের মূল্য আছে, তাদের কণ্ঠ শোনার অধিকার আছে। সল্ট যেভাবে গল্পের শক্তিকে ছড়িয়ে দিচ্ছে সল্ট শুধু সভার আয়োজনই করেনি, বরং গল্প বলার সংস্কৃতিকে স্থায়ী করতে কাজ করছে সেগুলোকে কমিউনিটিতে ছড়িয়ে দেওয়া

ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের জন্য আর্কাইভ তৈরি করা এবং মানুষের ব্যক্তিগত যাত্রাকে সমাজের শেখার উপাদানে পরিণত করা

এভাবে গল্প হয়ে উঠছে সম্মিলিত জ্ঞান ও মানবিক সংযোগের সেতুবন্ধন।

পেঁচাকোলা কমিউনিটির দাদীর এই আলোচনা সভা শুধু একটি ইভেন্ট নয়

এটি অতীতের সঙ্গে বর্তমানের, আর বর্তমানের সঙ্গে ভবিষ্যতের এক উষ্ণ মিলন।

সল্ট প্রমাণ করেছে সঠিক প্ল্যাটফর্ম পেলে প্রত্যেক মানুষের গল্পই মূ

ল্যবান, এবং প্রতিটি গল্পই শেখায়।
