Le chemin vers la Réconciliation au Burundi/The Way for Reconciliation in Burundi

English version below.

  • Nous demandons de l’aide en se rassemblant avec nos pairs ;
  • Nous devons nous exercer à écouter, respecter, apprécier et apprendre de ceux qui nous entourent, nos pairs et les marginalisés (orphelins, veuves, malades, prisonniers, handicapés etc..) ;

Background : Luc and Loli of the Constellation and France Competence are planning to walk on the "Chemin de St Jacques" from the 25th of May 2019, to support a very beautiful and important Reconciliation project in Burundi.The idea of this project is to train and support young Burundians in the establishment and facilitation of dialogue spaces in Burundi's municipalities. By using the SALT/CLCP approach, it is intended to stimulate, support, encourage, motivate and even provoking the Burundian population, especially young people, to act for, to fight for peace through the path of dialogue, respect and Love.

The initiator of the project, Sebastian Kizito, through his organization SEBALOOK, has started to mobilize the population and local authorities in the municipality of Bujumbura to work together on the first phases of this undertaking. Although the current estimated budget is around €250,000 for nationwide implementation, the Constellation's walkers aim to mobilize just over €12,000 for initial awareness-raising and training in the 6 communes of Bujumbura. Through this blog, Sebastian tells us more about his first sensitization session

"The Way for Reconciliation"

Some members of the Constellation and France Competence are planning to walk on the "Chemin de St Jacques" from 25 May 2019, to support a very beautiful and important Reconciliation project in Burundi.

The idea of this project is to train and support young Burundians in the establishment and facilitation of dialogue spaces in Burundi's municipalities. By using the SALT/CLCP approach, it is intended to stimulate, support, encourage, encourage, inspire and even provoke the Burundian population, especially young people, to act for, to fight for peace through the path of dialogue, respect and Love.

Here is how Sebastian Kizito, founder of the SEBALOOOK association and initiator of the project, expresses himself:

I would like to talk to you about the work to raise awareness for the Reconciliation project that began on April 26 and 27 in the MUSAGA zone in Bujumbura City Hall. I had already started activities last year, but as I have just received the Ministerial Order for my organization (SEBALOOK), I am now free to continue my Reconciliation Project.

I had named this activity "Seminar Awareness" and it was supposed to last two days.

When I started, the public expected refreshments, that their transportation would be covered,... as is done in other initiatives. But I had none of that.

They started to react badly by asking nasty questions to see if there was anything material I brought, but I was able to resist and make them understand that it is not the money that counts, but rather the purpose of the meeting. They started listening and I had planned to talk to them about sincere love; true love. I introduced the notion of love; the love that will lead us to peace, peace in turn to the development that the community in general needs.

In the middle of our conversation, I asked who is able to forgive even those who killed their parents? No one raised a finger. So I explained to them how we can forgive and love those who have really hurt us in the past and in the present:

In our normal human state, we are unable to forgive people who have really hurt us, so how do we forgive?

To be able to forgive something like that, we must know how to draw from our inner strengths, whether these forces come to us from the Holy Spirit or simply from our deep humanity.

The question was how we can discover these strengths in ourselves: to be able to help us forgive, forget and show compassion towards those who have offended us:

  • We ask for help by getting together with our peers;
  • We must practice listening, respecting, appreciating and learning from those around us, our peers and the marginalized (orphans, widows, sick, prisoners, disabled etc.);
  • Respect, discover and appreciate what we are proud of.

Afterwards, I noticed a change in their faces; the participants began to be impressed to see how we can forgive and love even your worst enemy.

The majority said: it is true that we did harm in 2015 by becoming a source of demonstrations in our country, but now we have changed, we are no longer the same; there are those who see us as rebels, so we just need to let them know that we have changed, that we want to repair the harm caused in 2015 by becoming a source of peace in our country. So we agreed together to organize a Peace March and invite media coverage, so that we could speak out in front of the whole nation and show that we have changed.

The chief of this area was present as well as the district chiefs; they gathered the community to create a committee and organize a Peace March. So we thought it would be better to visit the central prison in Bujumbura to do what we discovered. It should be noted that this prison houses several prisoners coming from this area.

We have done a lot in this area since last year and now we have an opportunity to move the activities forward. Once successful; the whole nation will have confidence in our organization in terms of Reconciliation; so it is important for us that we do so.

Today we have the first meeting with the organizing committee of this peace march
