When we start working with the community, we need to go with the mindset that they know better about their situation, environment and issues then me.

We outsiders think that we are educated, we have enough experience, we are perfect and we have the solutions. But the thing is different . Community has their own practical experiences, they have faced the problem and at some extent they have also tried to overcome the problems. They have practical approach rather than theoretical approach. So it is better that we can help them to realize their strengths and own the existing problems. We should also appreciate them for taking initiatives themselves. This will help them in confidence building and go ahead with improving what they are doing. They will inspire to do better. Once they will start owning the challenges, then the community will go ahead ...

Under HealthRise project of Catholic Health Association of India (CHAI), I did a SALT visit to a village in Jhadhol block, Udaipur district and did a SALT visit with a couple who were in the age group of 60—70 years. They were expressing their views with some hesitation and were in a dilemma what to share and what not to share.

We as a team appreciated the couple for the good things they are doing for example they motivate other patients to go for regular check up. Then they opened up and narrated their stories how they got into stress and were constantly worrying about the future of their children. The couple has a small piece of land and no permanent income. Will our children also lead a similar, difficult life like us The wife supported her husband that we should not worry but take action and support our children for a better future. She asked her son to move to Udaipur city and apply for a job. After one month both their sons got good jobs in a company. This relaxed them and reduced the stress they were going through. We appreciated how they had planned and were successful for building future of their children. We linked their achievemnt to their role in the community and how they can use this strength to build a healthy community. Now the couple is ready to help the other community members by every means- health check ups, come out of stress successfully etc. Hopefully these kind of people will contribute in making their village an ideal village.
