Democratic Republic of Congo, SGBV – Community Management of Sexual and Gender-based Violence in North and South Kivu

 

The will to wage a common fight against sexual violence has emerged from the socio-political and security situation in eastern DR Congo where women and girls are victims of sexual violence sparing no religious community (Catholic, Protestant, Muslim,Kimbanguistes, ...).

 

After a long experience in guiding their followers in the fight against HIV / AIDS, it is in unanimity that Solidarité Protestante and the Women and Families Department of the Baptist Community in Central Africa (DFF / CBCA) requested the assistance of RDCCompétence to apply SALT in the community response to sexual and gender-basedviolence (SGBV). This project is part of the training of CBCA community facilitators which focuses on providing high-impact interventions to very vulnerable communities. Follow-up missions are planned.

 

Thirteen ecclesiastical circumscriptions lying in Goma, Buturande, Katwa, Kanyabayonga, Bwatsinge, Kitsimba, Kisima, Kitsombiro, Vayana and Beni in North Kivu and Kalungu, Muku and Uvira in South Kivu participate in the project. Each circumscriptions has appointed two facilitators who accompany not only their members but also other local stakeholders who will participate in SALT visits and self-assessments.

 

The 26 participants from ecclesiastical circumscriptions of North and South Kivu had a five-day training in Goma, North Kivu, on the approach of Community Competence for the Management of SGBV. They returned this initiation in the various communities involved in the project.

 

Contrary to what they thought before the training and before having tasted the flavour of SALT, facilitators understood the importance of resolving by themselves their own concerns: seek invitation, stimulate dialogue in search for possible solutions before the arrival of any aid from partners; organize themselves to take ownership of the fight against sexual violence based on the available resources and their own strengths.

 

Here's the good practices observed:

 

1. After the training, which took place early October, some facilitators have started, on their return, their first SALT visits in their settings.

 

2. During the training, some facilitators gave their testimony of their daily lives alongside survivors of sexual violence.

 

3. During the review after action of a SALT visit, a facilitator said she understood that the SALT approach allows followers of different religious affiliations to connect.

 

4. The training has strengthened the understanding of learning and it was followed by the application in the respective communities of the facilitators. Three facilitators gave their feedback after the completion of their first visit SALT.

 

5. Members of Provincial Support Team are in constant contact with some of the trained facilitators.
