(Gaston's comment in English) It's so reassuring and a great relief when you enter a community as 'human being' instead of expert. An expert must always manage expectations. To be human is easier :). You only use the heart a little more than the thoughts, share your experiences (not easy if the person has been an expert for a long time ....) and try to understand the situation of people. After a real SALT visit, I always feel nourished and with more energy than before.
"We don’t play doctor, we listen, we share, we focus on strengths," exclaimed Leander, himself a physician, speaking of SALT visits made to Rumonge in southern Burundi.

(English version) I worked for years in HIV prevention in the coffee industry. All senior executives of the coffee industry were considered experts, including me. We were the ones explaining to the other workers how to deal with HIV without any proven technical competence, just based on some document on prevention. We even have been teaching support, while we had no experience in this field.
One day in 2007, I made a SALT visit of a market in Dar es Salaam in a community of former sex workers living with HIV. As usual, we were there as "experts", introducing ourselves by our titles. But after a few minutes the ice is melted. When the ladies began to share with us their experiences with HIV. In 30 minutes, we became students. All we knew was the opposite of what was needed. For example, I thought that once you were infected with HIV, you have to start taking ARVs. "We maintain a healthy lifestyle in order to delay the moment when we begin to take ARVs," told the women.
The exchange was so profound that we even acknowledged our inexperience. It has transformed me until today. The answer is not in the laboratory, it is in the communities. This has prompted me to join the Burundi Constellation team to harvest more experiences to pass on.
