Folwariyan Tola, Maharajganj: When Women Identified Their Own Problem and Found a Solution

Sometimes change does not come from outside — it begins within the community itself. Something similar happened in Folwariyan Tola, Maharajganj, which became a big learning experience for our Safe Society team.

After the ARC process, women started openly discussing the challenges they face in their daily lives. With the support of the facilitator, discussions were held using the SALT approach, where women were encouraged to understand their situation and identify the root causes of their problems.

During these conversations, one major issue came forward — the lack of toilets at home. Because of this, women and their daughters had to go outside for open defecation. Many women shared that during these times they often felt unsafe and, in some cases, faced misbehavior and harassment. This created fear, stress, and insecurity in their daily lives.

When the women understood the root cause of the problem through ARC, they made an important decision. They did not wait for the government to build toilets for them or depend on outside support. Instead, they believed in their own strength and collective power.

They started saving small amounts of money together and worked towards building toilets in their homes. As a first step, they arranged water facilities by constructing water tanks so that the toilets could be properly used.

Today, this initiative is not just about building a facility; it reflects the confidence, unity, and leadership of the women. The community itself is now leading change and finding solutions to its own problems.

For our Safe Society team, this journey has been full of learning. It showed us that when communities are given the right support and space, people become leaders of their own change.

कभी-कभी बदलाव बाहर से नहीं आता, बल्कि समुदाय के अंदर से ही शुरू होता है। ऐसा ही कुछ महराजगंज के फुलवरियन टोला में हुआ, जो हमारी Safe Society टीम के लिए एक बड़ा सीखने वाला अनुभव बना।

ARC प्रक्रिया के बाद महिलाओं ने अपने रोज़मर्रा के जीवन में आने वाली समस्याओं पर खुलकर बात करना शुरू किया। फेसीलिटेटर के सहयोग से बैठकों और चर्चाओं के दौरान महिलाओं को अपनी स्थिति समझने और समस्याओं की जड़ पहचानने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया गया।

इन बातचीतों के दौरान एक बड़ी समस्या सामने आई — घरों में शौचालय की कमी। इसके कारण महिलाओं और उनकी बेटियों को खुले में शौच के लिए बाहर जाना पड़ता था। कई महिलाओं ने बताया कि उस समय वे खुद को असुरक्षित महसूस करती थीं और कई बार उन्हें गलत व्यवहार और छेड़छाड़ जैसी स्थितियों का सामना करना पड़ता था। इससे उनके जीवन में डर, तनाव और असुरक्षा बनी रहती थी।

जब महिलाओं ने ARC के माध्यम से समस्या की असली वजह को समझा, तो उन्होंने एक महत्वपूर्ण फैसला लिया। उन्होंने सरकार या किसी बाहरी मदद का इंतज़ार नहीं किया। इसके बजाय उन्होंने अपनी ताकत और सामूहिक शक्ति पर भरोसा किया।

उन्होंने मिलकर थोड़ी-थोड़ी बचत करना शुरू किया और अपने घरों में शौचालय बनाने की दिशा में काम किया। पहले कदम के रूप में उन्होंने पानी की व्यवस्था के लिए पानी की टंकियाँ बनाईं, ताकि शौचालयों का सही तरीके से उपयोग किया जा सके।

आज यह पहल सिर्फ एक सुविधा बनाने तक सीमित नहीं है, बल्कि यह महिलाओं के आत्मविश्वास, एकता और नेतृत्व को दिखाती है। अब समुदाय खुद बदलाव की अगुवाई कर रहा है और अपनी समस्याओं का समाधान स्वयं खोज रहा है।

हमारी Safe Society टीम के लिए यह यात्रा सीख से भरी रही। इसने हमें दिखाया कि जब समुदायों को सही सहयोग और अवसर मिलता है, तो लोग अपने बदलाव के खुद नेता बन जाते हैं।
