SALT Visit by CLC nepal with PLHIV _Stigma and Discrimination

June 23,2013

at Chitwan Sakriya Samuha (CSS)

Bharatpur-10,Chitwan,Nepal

Actually, today we were supposed to give orientation on Stigma and Discrimination related to HIV/AIDS.But today we applied SALT here.It was a great experience.Everybody enjoyed it.

The Enviornment was cool. All participants arrived by 11 am.Everybody in the room were informed that we are here for learning.Today they are our teacher and we are student and we are waiting to learn form their experience,feelings,struggle..etc.

They were surprised and seem very interested.Curious Smiles on their face... :)

Well,we followed the same process as we did during the visit with Female Sex Workers. https://aidscompetence.ning.com/profiles/blogs/salt-visit-by-clc-nepal-with-female-sex-workers.

"One of the community member shared that he took the decision of suicide after knowing his result of being HIV positive on 2051 B.S.But on the way to home form hospital, he saw a hoarding Board "HIV/AIDS is not END of Life". He got motivated by those words. His self confidence

increased. So he quit his decision of doing suicide. And he started getting knowledge on HIV/AIDS and having access to HIV treatment.Further more, His thoughts were so positive that helped his wife to get HIV tested and take medications. Now both are healthy and got no side effects of ART till date."

How did we applied SALT here?

S- Stimulation: Self Case reveled by Dev. Kumari Rana, and Our claps after each Sharing of their feeling were Stimulating Factor.

A-Appreciation:Appreciated the

ir strengths, courage,Speaking capacity in mass, their ability of sharing their learning's,their contribution to motivate other people (PLHIVs) to access the treatment

L-Learn:The Hoarding Boards with correct information such as "HIV/AIDS is not end of Life". Is very motivational and encouraging factor to increase Self-Confidence and to Reduce Stigma.

T-Transfer:We shared and transferred our learning's and feelings between us.

How Can we do Better Next time?

Actually,i think we were unable to connect SALT with Stigma and Discrimination.Though th

e community shared their experience of Stigma and Discrimination (such as self-stigma and so on...)But still we feel there was something missing.

The questions we asked were:

  1. What is the reason behind their happiness?
  2. What are the changes at present comparing to their past after being connected with organization?
  3. What are their Dreams?
  4. What are they Proud of?

So as we felt something was missing on our SALT visit to have connection with Stigma and Discrimination, I kindly request to provide some suggestions so that we can apply and improve our future visits.

"Lets End Stigma and Discrimination"

We all are Adorable Individual Determined to Survive...

Hi Aliya,

back from a SALT visit with migrant women on HIV. How can we address Stigma through SALT you had asked me. I got an experience in my SALT visit today. Whe we were discussing the action women are taking on HIV. One middle aged woman told the younger women that by eating together, socialising, talking or touch positive people one does not get HIV it is just like any other disease. This community conversation stirred further discussion on how to address stigma in their community. I will take it further tomorrow through dream building exercise. I learned that such conversations with the community can lead to change, telling people not to stigmatise doesn't help, it has to come from within.
