Many people hesitate while they speak in front of the mass. It is not a new thing to all. It is natural to shy and feel awkward when we speak. Effective communication is a key to enter one’s mind, solicit, and share the experiences. It was 11 January 2014; we Dipendra Malla and Nabaraj Adhikari had planned to have a salt visit next day in a youth led social organization called ‘Thakuri Youth Family, Kaski’. Therefore, we made a contact at secretary office and informed them for an informal visit.

Next day, we went to the organization, introduced ourselves as a person to know and learn about the organization. Our motive was to help them to identify their capabilities, strengths or competencies and achieve their goals based on those competencies they realize.

First, we asked them about what they are proud of as a person or as a organization. At first, they felt hesitated to respond. Therefore, in order to stimulate them to share their experiences, we told our own stories, which provided common ground for all of us.  Consequently, they started to share their own experiences. Story began to come out one by one. For instance, they were proud of helping the helpless such as fire victims, sick people through fund raising programs and changing people lives. Though they were not economically sound, they are proud of using social media and technology such as facebook community page.

Secondly, we appreciated their social activities and encouraged them to do those activities in future too. We told them that we were inspired by them and told them to continue these activities. For instance, we appreciated Thakuri youth family could be role model for others and act as a motivator in changing people’s lives. CLC clap was useful tool to transfer the positive vibes amongst all the members.

Thirdly, we and other members itself got motivated by the amazing stories. We learnt many things together. The story of the president of youth family, Kaski Mr. Pritam Sen Thakuri was very inspiring. He shared his lifetime experiences about how he grew up and became a successful businessperson despite many hurdles of life.

Lastly, we encouraged them to transfer the learnings to the relevant person and situations because it is said that ‘knowledge will multiply if we share or diminish if we limit those knowledge to ourselves’.

USEFUL APPROACH:

  1. Share own stories to stimulate them to speak
  2. Inform them how they could be a role model and motivator to inspire others for change
  3. Try to discover such stories, which could be inspiring for other members by linking them
  4. Share examples about how sharing helps to increase our knowledge and skills and bring positive change in other lives.
