Connecting local responses around the world
I have been using SALT and CLCP with Patient Support Group in Village Jamog, Mashobra, Himachal, India. I see a dramatic improvement in response of the group to the issue of health, diabetes and hypertension.
For eg a patient from our group, who is not part of our project but had come for screening. Her sugar levels high. She started taking medicine but stopped after some time. Then when she came for our camp in Suni her level had gone beyond 400. Meanwhile she became a regular when we started using CLCP with teh PSG in her village Jamog. Soon she realised that it was important for her to take medicine. When we asked PSG what was their dream. She said that she wanted to be healthy and control her sugar levels. She is now very regular with her tablets and her sugar levels have improved. She is now an active member of the PSG.
Similarly the group felt that to be healthy,we need to exercise. As part of their action plan they decided to do yoga. Two women in the village knew yoga. So patients and few members of Mahila Mandal (women group) invited Virender and me to teach them yoga. We taught them some basic exercises. Now the two women more experienced in yoga have taken the responsibility for leading the yoga sessions and the group has begun to regularly do yoga. What has motivated them? They have realised that it is for their. They also want to help others. So they think that they need to learn it well so that they can encourage others to lead a healthy life.
The PSG has invited us on 28th July where Mahila Mandal meeting will be held. They will also invite the Aanganwadi worker. They plan to hold a discussion on health.
What SALT and CLCP do as a process are that they motivate to take action which has been decided by them
They will also invite the anganwadi worker of other village junni* for yoga session and plan to discussion on health.
