I will share with you three action plans Patient support Group on diabetes and Hypertension made and executed in Village Barog, Himachal. This is an example when a group like this becomes active, how much it can achieve. This experience is from HealthRise program.
PSG organises NCD health check up camp on its own
First action plan was holding a health camp for Non communicable diseases on 15th June. They divided responsibilities. The head of the village (pradhan) said that he will get fruits to distribute among those who come for the camp. The health worker said he would check sugar and blood pressure and other local workers like Aanganwadi worker and ASHA said that they will inform the people to attend the camp. I had some work and it was not possible for me to attend the camp. This did not stop them. They organised the camp at the Sub-centre as per schedule with full responsibility. Health worker not only checked BP and sugar but Aanganwadi worker and ASHA also checked the height and weight of those who came. 21 people came for the health check up.
Increase in people coming for BP and sugar check ups
I recently met the health worker. He is very happy. He said that earlier very few people came for screening of sugar and BP levels. they came for other illnesses like fever. Now at least 3-4 people come up. The PSG has become active and it encourages people to go for testing.
School children begin to engage in physical activities and games
PSG was concerned that school children spend time at home watching TV or on mobile phones. So they decided to encourage children to play outside in the evenings after school. Now a large group of boys play games every evening for at least one hour.
Use of dustbins
Government had installed dustbins in the village about 6-8 months ago. But people were not using them and were throwing waste around their homes. Some members of PSG did home visits and met the people and urged them to use dustbins. Now people have begun to throw waste in the dustbins.
