Mozambique, a country in Southern Africa, has a population of around 29 million inhabitants. The World Health Organization, WHO, estimates that about 15% of the population of each country in sub-Saharan Africa has a disability. From 2008-2011, we were part of a unique and genuine process of stimulating and connecting communities, involving dialogue and sharing our visions about the value of life, and feelings about caring for each other and showing love and regard. It took place in Manica, Sofala and Maputo. About 30 associations, including people living with HIV and AIDS and others with disabilities, broke down myths and prejudices, and took on the role and responsibility of working together. We learnt to go into families and become part of them. We also learnt not to be afraid of sorrow and pain because when it is shared it becomes a passing thing. We learnt to build and strengthen our sense of resilience, and we became strong. We learnt the concept of SUPPORT, APPRECIATE, LEARN AND TRANSFORM - SALT. All this has not been lost. The people are still there, the will still prevails, and the knowledge has been built. What is needed now is for people to come together again to restore the process of Life Competence in Mozambique.
