Local Solutions for Local Challenges: A Community-led Research

For the past few years, Avani Organization has been working on SALT in Nandwal village. We used the CLCP (Community Life Competence Process) in this work. Initially, we conducted SALT with people from various age groups. Then we carried out Dream Building with them. During this work, there were suicides in the village. At that time, the people who had participated in SALT in the village suggested finding a solution. Subsequently, after discussions between Avani Foundation and the village panchayat, and according to the wishes of the villagers, it was decided to work on this issue. Avani Foundation, Ritu Nanda, and all the groups from Nandwal village participated in this effort. This initiative was termed *“Anandamay Gaon”* (Well Being). Avani's smile team played a crucial role. A research team was formed, and the "Smile Team" was an important part of this research. The Smile Team played a supportive role, ensuring that all examination and analysis work was carried out smoothly and effectively. A total of 30 people from the village participated in this. The team comprised members of the village panchayat, anganwadi workers, ASHA workers, men, women, youth, and elders, including individuals from families affected by suicides.

In the first two meetings, discussions were held on how to conduct the research. Following this, a survey in the village was decided upon, and 15 members of the research team dedicated their valuable time to surveying 672 people. A qualitative survey was also conducted among the families affected by suicides to identify the root causes. The villagers suggested various measures to address these issues. Avani provided support to the team. After the research was completed, it was necessary to present the findings to the villagers. A meeting was scheduled for August 18th at a temple in the village. Ritu Nanda from GFC was present to assist the research team. The Smile Team and the research team went door-to-door in Nandwal village to inform the residents about the upcoming meeting.

On the evening of August 17th, the research team held a meeting and decided to present the findings through a play. A total of 8 plays were planned on the following topics:

1. Mental stress and tension

2. Romantic relationships

3. Lack of communication due to mobile phones

4. The burden of expectations and children’s demands

5. The impact on families after a suicide

6. Difficulties faced by men in expressing themselves

7. Conflicts with elderly people

8. Stress due to addiction

The research team prepared 2-minute plays for each of these findings. They had very little time. At the research meeting, many young people and men were present. The research team effectively presented the findings through these plays. Many people understood these issues. At the end of the meeting, some villagers discussed how to resolve these problems. Initially, 40 people had participated in the research, but due to time constraints, only 15 people were able to continue their involvement.
