International Men’s Day: A Reflection on Positive Masculinity

Every year on 19th November, International Men’s Day is celebrated across the world. This day is an important opportunity to honor the contributions of men and to look sensitively at their emotional, mental, and social needs.
In today’s time, there is a need to look at the concept of masculinity from a new perspective. Under the guidance of Ritu Nanda, employees from various organizations associated with GFC meet once a month for online discussions on this topic. We, the male employees, come together for these sessions and understand ourselves, society, and our roles more deeply.
Traditionally, masculinity has been defined as strength, responsibility, toughness, and a face that never shows tears. But the reality is different — men also have emotions, struggles, and a need for support. Positive masculinity means having the freedom to express oneself, building respectful relationships, and valuing one’s own as well as others’ emotions.
For the past few months, I have been having open discussions on masculinity with men in Nandwal village. When we begin talking about this topic after the SALT activity, men openly express their hidden pressures, pains, and unspoken feelings. For years, due to family responsibilities, fear of “what society will say,” and the mindset that “men shouldn’t cry,” many things are suppressed within.
The atmosphere at home has also changed. Because of mobile phones and TV, even when everyone is together, there is no meaningful conversation. When fathers return home in the evening and try to share their struggles of the day, no one really listens. Many men carry a deep pain of not being heard.
Through these conversations, I gained many insights and also noticed changes within myself. I truly realized that opening one’s heart is the first step towards healing.
I never imagined that I would write something so heartfelt on International Men’s Day. But expressing emotions in words always brings me comfort. When people trust me enough to share their inner feelings, it brings me immense happiness. Through the work of Avani organization, wherever we engage, I will continue creating open conversations about masculinity so that men can experience peace and emotional relief.
International Men’s Day reminds us that men are not just earners; they are sensitive individuals with emotions, dreams, and the capacity to shape society.
Speaking about their mental health, listening to them, and creating safe spaces for them to express themselves — this is our shared responsibility.
Today’s men need to move beyond the mask of “I’m fine” and express their true emotions.
