From Dream to Reality: How Students Took the Lead on Clean Water

   ২০২৪ সালে জয়নগর হাই স্কুলের শিক্ষক এবং শিক্ষার্থী এবং স্কুল ম্যানেজমেন্ট কমিটি একসাথে হয়ে তাদের স্কুল নিয়ে স্বপ্ন তৈরি করে ২০৩৫ সালে তারা কেমন দেখতে চায় তাদের স্কুলকে। স্বপ্নের একটা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অংশ ছিলো বিশুদ্ধ পানির ব্যবস্থা করা।  কারন তাদের স্কুলে বিশুদ্ধ আয়রনমুক্ত পানির ব্যবস্থা নেই। পানিতে আয়রন থাকায় শিক্ষার্থীরা কম পানি পান করে। এবং প্রতিটি ক্লাসরুমে ফিল্টার না থাকার কারণে দোতলা তিনতলায় শ্রেনিকক্ষের শিক্ষার্থীরা একদমই পানি পান করে না। ফলে তাদের বিভিন্ন শারীরিক সমস্যার সৃষ্টি হচ্ছে। তাদের স্বপ্নটা আমি আপনাদের পড়ার জন্য আবার নিচে যুক্ত করে দিচ্ছি, “২০৩৫ সালের মধ্যে আমরা আমাদের স্কুলকে একটি মডেল প্রতিষ্ঠান হিসাবে রুপান্তরিত করতে চাই, যেখানে থাকবে পরিষ্কার পরিচ্ছন্ন ক্যাম্পাস, নিরাপদ পানির সুব্যবস্থা, সমৃদ্ধ লাইব্রেরি, আকর্ষণীয় ফুলের বাগান, উন্নত ও স্বাস্থ্যসম্মত টয়লেট, ক্যান্টিনের ব্যবস্থা, ছেলে মেয়েদের জন্য পর্যাপ্ত খেলার মাঠ, শিক্ষার্থীদের মধ্যে সুস্থ মানসিকতা গড়ে তুলতে বিভিন্ন ক্রিড়া ও সাংস্কৃতিক কার্যক্রমের আয়োজন করা। পর্যাপ্ত শ্রেণির সংখ্যা বাড়ানো, শ্রেণিকক্ষে পর্যাপ্ত বেঞ্চের ব্যবস্থা করা, শিক্ষার্থীদেরকে বৈশ্বিক মানদণ্ডে উপযোগী করে তোলার জন্যে স্টুডেন্ট ক্লাব গড়ে তোলা, ডিজিটাল ক্লাসরুম ও মাল্টিমিডিয়ার মাধ্যমে ক্লাসের ব্যবস্থা করা, দূরবর্তী শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য আবাসন ব্যবস্থা করা, এবং মেয়েদের জন্য উন্নত কমন রুম গড়ে তুলতে আমরা প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করব। তখনই আমরা আমাদের স্বপ্নের স্কুল ২০৩৫ সালের মধ্যে গড়ে তুলতে সক্ষম হবো। আধুনিক প্রশিক্ষণ কার্যক্রমের মাধ্যমে শিক্ষকদের দক্ষ ও যোগ্য করে গড়ে তোলার মাধ্যমে সর্বাধুনিক শিক্ষার পরিবেশ নিশ্চিত করা সম্ভব হবে।“ এই বছরের এপ্রিল মাসে গ্রো ইউর রিডার ফাউন্ডেশন যে জ্ঞানের মেলার আয়োজন করেছিলো সেখানে ব্রেড অর্গানাইজেশন তাদের কমিউনিটির মানুষেরা কিভাবে প্রাকৃতিক উপায়ে ফিল্টার তৈরি করে পানির সমস্যা সমাধান করছেন তা সবার সাথে শেয়ার করেন। সেখান থেকে শিক্ষার্থীরা অনেক অনুপ্রেরণা নেয় এবং অবশেষে তারা সেটা নিজেরাই তৈরি করে ফেলে। গত সোমবারে আমরা অষ্টম শ্রেণীর খ শাখার শিক্ষার্থীদের আমন্ত্রণে জয়নগর মাধ্যমিক বিদ্যালয়ে যায়। তারা মূলত আমাদেরকে আমন্ত্রণ জানিয়েছিল এজন্য যে তারা প্রাকৃতিক নিয়মে মাটির হাঁড়ি দিয়ে বিদ্যালয়ের একটি পানি বিশুদ্ধকরণ ফিল্টার উদ্বোধন করবেন। তাদের কাজ আমাদেরকে দেখানোর জন্য তারা খুবই উৎসাহী ছিলেন। আর এরই ধারাবাহিকতায় আমরা তাদের আমন্ত্রণ সাদরে গ্রহণ করি আমরা বিদ্যালয়ে যথাসময়ে উপস্থিত হয়ে তাদের ফিল্টারটি তৈরি করতে দেখি। সেখানে তাদের স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত অংশগ্রহণ ছিল যে কারো চোখে পড়ার মত । তারা সবাই মিলে চাঁদা তুলে শ্রেণিকক্ষে বিশুদ্ধ পানির ব্যবস্থা করার জন্য ফিল্টার তৈরি করেছে। আগের থেকে সম্পর্কের উন্নতি হয়েছে কারন আগে তারা ছেলেরা মেয়েদের সাথে খুব কম কথা বলত। কিন্তু একসাথে কাজ করার ফলে তাদের বন্ধুদের মধ্যেও একতা ফিরে আসছে। আগের থেকে সম্পর্কের উন্নতি হয়েছে কারন আগে তারা ছেলেরা মেয়েদের সাথে খুব কম কথা বলত। যেটা আমরা স্বচক্ষে না দেখলে বুঝতামই না। কেননা ফিল্টার তৈরি সময় তাদের ছেলে এবং মেয়ে শিক্ষার্থীদের মধ্যে ছিল এক উৎফুল্ল আনন্দঘন পরিবেশ। যেটা না দেখলে আমরা কখনই অনুধাবন করতে পারতাম না। সবথেকে আনন্দের বিষয় এখন অন্য শ্রেনিকক্ষের শিক্ষার্থীরা এই ফিল্টার বানানোর জন্য আগ্রহী হয়ে উঠেছে। আশা করি খুব দ্রুত সব ক্লাসেই এই ফিল্টার তারা বানিয়ে ফেলতে পারবে কারন তাদের সহকারী প্রধান শিক্ষক নিজে উপস্থিত থেকে এই ফিল্টারের উদ্বোধন করেছেন এবং অনেক সাহস দিয়েছেন যার ফলে শিক্ষার্থীরা আরো অনেক বেশি অনুপ্রাণিত হয়েছে। এখন অষ্টম শ্রেনী খ শাখার ৮১ জন শিক্ষার্থীরা আয়রনমুক্ত পানি পান করছে আগামীতে স্কুলের প্রায় ১০০০ শিক্ষার্থী এই চ্যালঞ্জের সমাধান করে ফেলবে। পরিশেষে তাদের সর্বঙ্গিন মঙ্গল কামনা করে তাদের সাথে আনন্দ ভাগাভাগি করে তাদের এই উদ্যোগ কে সাধুবাদ জানিয়ে তাদের থেকে বিদায় নিয়ে চলে আসি। In 2024, the teachers, students, and School Management Committee (SMC) of Joynagar High School came together to build a dream for their school—how they want it to look by the year 2035. One of the most important elements of this vision was to ensure access to safe drinking water, as the school currently does not have a system for clean, iron-free water. Because of the high iron content in the water, students drink very little, and since there are no water filters in classrooms, students on the second and third floors hardly drink any water at all. As a result, many of them have been facing health issues. Here is their Dream statement for you to read: "By 2035, we aim to transform our school into a model institution with a clean and well-maintained campus, safe drinking water facilities, a well-stocked library, an attractive flower garden, improved and hygienic toilets, a canteen, and a separate playground for girls. Various sports and cultural activities will be organized to promote a healthy mindset among students. We will increase the number of classrooms, ensure sufficient benches in classrooms, establish student clubs to prepare students for global standards, and introduce digital classrooms with multimedia facilities. Accommodation will be arranged for students from distant areas, and adequate dustbins will be placed throughout the campus. Additionally, we will set up a well-equipped common room for girls. Only then will we be able to build our dream school by 2035. By implementing modern training programs, we will develop skilled and qualified teachers, ensuring the most advanced learning environment.” In April this year, during the “Knowledge Fair” organized by the Grow Your Reader Foundation, BRED Organization shared how their community members solve water-related challenges by creating natural water filters. Inspired by this story, the students of Joynagar High School decided to make their own filter. Last Monday, at the invitation of the students of Class 8, Section B, we visited Joynagar High School. They had invited us to witness the inauguration of a natural water purification filter they had made using clay pots. The students were incredibly enthusiastic about showing us their work, and we gladly accepted their invitation. We arrived at the school on time and watched them assemble the filter. Their active participation was truly remarkable and noticeable to anyone present. Pooling their own contributions, the students built a water filter to ensure safe drinking water in their classroom. This teamwork has also improved relationships among them—previously, boys rarely spoke to the girls, but working together has helped bring a sense of unity back among friends. This change was clearly visible; the joyous and collaborative atmosphere while they were making the filter is something we might never have realized if we hadn’t seen it firsthand. The most encouraging part is that students from other classes are now eager to make similar filters. We hope that soon all classrooms will have their own water filters, especially as the assistant head teacher personally attended the inauguration, offering encouragement and inspiring the students even more. Currently, 81 students from Class 8, Section B are drinking iron-free water, and in the near future, nearly 1,000 students of the school will overcome this challenge as well. In conclusion, we wished them success, shared in their joy, and praised their remarkable initiative before bidding them farewell.

Beautifully written, Prokash Bhai. This is a great example of how communities can learn from one another. Moreover, the students had learned the method of making filters back in Grade 5, but they never had the opportunity to apply it in their daily lives. Your and Manira Apu’s excellent facilitation helped them realize that they have a lot of strength within themselves and that they can solve their own challenges if they want to.

খুব সুন্দর লিখেছেন প্রকাশ ভাই। কমিউনিটি থেকে কমিউনিটি কিভাবে শিখতে পারে এটা তার একটি বড় উদাহরণ। এছাড়া শিক্ষার্থীরা ৫ম শ্রেনিতে ফিল্টার বানানোর পদ্ধতি শিখেছে কিন্তু তা দৈনন্দিন জীবনে কখনো প্রয়োগ করার সুযোগ পায়নি। আপনার আর মনিরা আপার অসাধারণ ফ্যাসিলিটেশন তাদেরকে অনুধারন করতে সাহায্য করেছে যে তাদের অনেক শক্তি আছে এবং তারা ইচ্ছে করলেই তাদের চ্যালেঞ্জের সমাধান করতে পারে।
