Beyond Expectations: A Community-Led Knowledge Fair Experience

We shared with the Pechakola community that we were going to start working in Char Nakalia, where we would initiate activities using the SALT approach. We told them that we would go to the char together with them. There, they would share their small and large collective initiatives, their successes, and how they overcame challenges. Our initial idea was simple—a small gathering, something like a courtyard meeting. But we never imagined that they would transform that meeting into such a vibrant and lively Knowledge Fair with their own ideas and creativity.

The members of the Pechakola community sat together multiple times to plan what they would share and how they would present their stories to the char community. They stayed connected through meetings and phone calls. On the other hand, I barely knew anyone from the char community except for one or two people.

The day before the Knowledge Fair, I traveled from Dhaka to Pabna and went to the char in the afternoon. I was truly amazed by their warmth and hospitality. Even though they didn’t know me, they welcomed me as if I were one of their own. I met them regularly, and they shared their ideas—what they would do, what they had prepared—showing everything with excitement. Even though we had not yet formally started SALT with them, their effort was 100 percent. Their spontaneous participation deeply inspired me.

They showed how they would decorate the gate and prepare drawings. Seeing their enthusiasm, I forgot the fatigue of 7–8 hours of travel in a moment. They shared that such a Knowledge Fair had never been held in their char before. For them, it was a big celebration. They had planned the entire day with great care and excitement.

The next morning, on the 11th, when we arrived at the venue, we saw everyone busy preparing together. Some were fixing the stage, others were cleaning the area. Everyone was beautifully dressed—some in sarees, some in panjabis. Although Pahela Baishakh was just three days away, it felt as if they were already celebrating the New Year on that day.

Their presentation and participation were effortless and natural. Through traditional Jari songs, they expressed the problems of their community. The Pechakola community shared their initiatives and learnings with the char community. The char participants asked questions, and Pechakola members responded. In this way, they exchanged knowledge and jointly developed an action plan.

During the group SALT sessions, four groups were formed. In each group, members from the char community sat together with members from Pechakola and engaged in SALT conversations. They discussed climate change—what challenges they were facing and how they could work together to solve them.

The “Alokito Kori” team traveled more than 10 hours to attend and listen to the stories of our communities. They also shared their experiences, which inspired everyone. Marufa from the Pechakola community shared her journey to Dhaka and her story of confidence—how a girl who had never stepped outside her village traveled to Dhaka and participated in a podcast to share her story.

Overall, this experience was completely different for me. It went beyond my expectations. This was a fully community-led initiative, and I enjoyed every moment of it from the heart.

পেঁচাকোলা কমিউনিটির সাথে আমরা শেয়ার করেছিলাম যে আমরা চর নাকালিয়াতে কাজ করতে যাচ্ছি। সেখানে SALT initiative নিয়ে কাজ শুরু করবো। আমরা তাদের বলেছিলাম, তাদেরকে নিয়েই আমরা চরে যাবো। সেখানে তারা নিজেদের ছোট-বড় যৌথ উদ্যোগগুলো শেয়ার করবে, তাদের সাফল্য এবং চ্যালেঞ্জ কীভাবে মোকাবিলা করেছে তা তুলে ধরবে। আমাদের ধারণা ছিল—ছোট একটা বৈঠক হবে, উঠোন বৈঠকের মতো। কিন্তু তারা যে সেই বৈঠককে নিজেদের ভাবনা আর সৃজনশীলতা দিয়ে এতটা জীবন্ত ও প্রাণবন্ত একটি জ্ঞান মেলায় রূপ দেবে—তা একেবারেই কল্পনায় ছিল না।

পেঁচাকোলা কমিউনিটির সদস্যরা বসে বসে পরিকল্পনা করেছে—কী শেয়ার করবে, কীভাবে চরের মানুষের কাছে তাদের গল্পগুলো তুলে ধরবে। এ নিয়ে বেশ কয়েকবার তারা একসাথে বসেছে, ফোনে যোগাযোগ করেছে। অন্যদিকে চর কমিউনিটির কাউকেই আমি তেমন চিনতাম না, ২–১ জন ছাড়া।

জ্ঞান মেলার আগের দিন ঢাকা থেকে পাবনায় পৌঁছে বিকেলে চরে যাই। সেখানে গিয়ে আমি সত্যিই অবাক হয়ে যাই তাদের আন্তরিকতায়। তারা আমাকে চিনত না, কিন্তু এমনভাবে আপন করে নিয়েছিল যেন আমি তাদেরই একজন। তাদের সাথে আমার প্রতিদিনই দেখা হতো। তারা তাদের আইডিয়াগুলো শেয়ার করছিল—কীভাবে কী করবে, কী কী তৈরি করেছে—সব দেখাচ্ছিল। যদিও তখনও আমরা তাদের সাথে SALT শুরু করিনি, তবুও তাদের প্রচেষ্টা ছিল শতভাগ। তাদের স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত অংশগ্রহণ আমাকে ভীষণভাবে অনুপ্রাণিত করেছে।

তারা দেখাচ্ছিল কীভাবে গেট সাজাবে, কীভাবে ড্রয়িংগুলো করবে। মুহূর্তেই ৭–৮ ঘণ্টার ক্লান্তি ভুলে গিয়েছিলাম তাদের উৎসাহ দেখে। তারা বলছিল, তাদের চরে আগে কখনো এমন জ্ঞান মেলা হয়নি। এটি তাদের জন্য অনেক বড় একটি উৎসব। তাই তারা দিনটিকে ঘিরে অনেক পরিকল্পনা করেছে।

পরের দিন, ১১ তারিখ সকালে আমরা ভেন্যুতে পৌঁছে দেখি সবাই মিলে সাজসজ্জার কাজে ব্যস্ত। কেউ স্টেজ ঠিক করছে, কেউ ঝাড়ু দিচ্ছে। সবাই সুন্দর করে সেজেছে—কেউ শাড়ি, কেউ পাঞ্জাবি পরে এসেছে। তিন দিন পরই বৈশাখ, কিন্তু তাদের আনন্দ দেখে মনে হচ্ছিল ১১ তারিখেই যেন তারা বৈশাখকে বরণ করে নতুন বছর উদযাপন করছে।

তাদের উপস্থাপনা আর অংশগ্রহণ ছিল একদম স্বতঃস্ফূর্ত ও সহজ। তারা সুন্দর জারি গান গেয়ে তাদের কমিউনিটির সমস্যাগুলো তুলে ধরেছে। পেঁচাকোলা কমিউনিটি তাদের উদ্যোগ ও শেখাগুলো চরের মানুষের সাথে শেয়ার করেছে। চরের মানুষ নানা প্রশ্ন করেছে, পেঁচাকোলার সদস্যরা সেগুলোর উত্তর দিয়েছে। এভাবে তারা একে অপরের সাথে জ্ঞান বিনিময় করেছে এবং দুই কমিউনিটি মিলে একটি যৌথ কর্মপরিকল্পনা তৈরি করেছে।

গ্রুপ SALT সেশনে চারটি গ্রুপ করা হয়। প্রতিটি গ্রুপে চরের সদস্যদের সাথে পেঁচাকোলার কয়েকজন করে বসে SALT আলাপ করে। তারা জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন নিয়ে আলোচনা করে—কী কী সমস্যা হচ্ছে, এবং কীভাবে একসাথে সেই সমস্যাগুলোর সমাধান করা যায়, তা নিয়ে কথা বলে।

‘আলোকিত করি’ টিম ১০ ঘণ্টার বেশি পথ পাড়ি দিয়ে আমাদের কমিউনিটির গল্প শুনতে এসেছিল। তারা তাদের অভিজ্ঞতাও শেয়ার করেছে, যা আমাদের কমিউনিটিকে অনুপ্রাণিত করেছে। পেঁচাকোলা কমিউনিটির মারুফা তার ঢাকায় যাওয়ার গল্প এবং তার আত্মবিশ্বাসের গল্প সবার সাথে শেয়ার করেছে—যে মেয়ে কখনো নিজের গ্রামের বাইরে যায়নি, সে ঢাকায় গিয়ে একটি পডকাস্টে অংশ নিয়ে নিজের গল্প বলেছে। সবকিছু মিলিয়ে আমার অভিজ্ঞতাটি ছিল একেবারেই ভিন্ন। আমার চিন্তা-ভাবনার বাইরে ছিল এবারের আয়োজন। এটি ছিল পুরোপুরি কমিউনিটি-নেতৃত্বাধীন একটি আয়োজন, যার প্রতিটি মুহূর্ত আমি হৃদয় দিয়ে উপভোগ করেছি।
