A Tale of Selfless Service: The Inspiring Journey of Sister Rohita Lohar

In the quiet setting of Bhatpara Tea Garden, I had the privilege of meeting a remarkable young woman, 29-year-old Sister Rohita Lohar. During our SALT conversation, she shared a deeply personal story that not only moved me but also made me reflect on the true meaning of service and compassion in life.

A Story of Sacrifice and Care

Around six or seven years ago, Rohita went to work at the home of an aunty in the Basa Line area. Her responsibilities included sweeping, washing clothes, cooking meals, and cleaning utensils. What began as a simple household job changed into something far greater when the aunty fell seriously ill.

Over time, complications from diabetes worsened her condition. A small wound on her foot grew into a severe ulcer, eventually becoming infected to the point where maggots spread through her leg. The family was distressed, but in those critical days, Rohita became the strongest pillar of support.

Without hesitation, she took up the responsibility of caring for the aunty as if she were her own family. She bathed her, prepared her meals, gave her medicines, and dressed her wounds daily. Day and night, through struggle and pain, she stayed by her side. Slowly, there were signs of recovery—but fate had something else in store. Suddenly, one day, the aunty passed away.

For Rohita, this loss was heartbreaking. She had cared for her not as a worker, but as a daughter would for her mother. While telling me this story, her eyes filled with tears. Listening to her, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Mother Teresa’s spirit of selfless service.

Reflections on Society

When I asked Rohita about her vision for society, her response was simple yet profound:

“In both happiness and sorrow, we should stand together. The true strength of society is in supporting one another during difficult times.”

Later, I asked her what she valued most from our conversation. With a humble smile, she answered:

“Today, I remembered an incident from my life that I had never shared with anyone before. It made me realize once again that service and helping others is the real wealth of life. Today, I feel lighter and more inspired.”

In the end, I asked if there was something more we could do differently. After pausing thoughtfully, she said:

“If we listen to the stories of our parents and share such real-life experiences with children, we can instill the values of kindness and service in them from a young age. That will guide society in a better direction.”

An Inspiration for Us All

Sister Rohita’s story is a reminder that real heroism is not found in titles or recognition but in the quiet, selfless acts of love and care. Her journey shows us that even the smallest gesture of service can bring comfort, dignity, and change in someone’s life.

In her humility and compassion, we see the values that hold the power to transform families, communities, and even societies. Truly, her life is an inspiration for all of us.
