On 25th September 2025, in the open and green surroundings of Dhaka University VC Chattar, our Alokito Kori team organized a Masculinity Exercise Session. I, Parvez Hassan, facilitated the session, with active participation from Nishat Tasnim, Brinty Saha, Jhumur Sarkar, and Neloy Das.
Structure of the Session
In this exercise, we discussed how gender roles shape our daily lives and influence the distribution of household work.
Together, we created a 24-hour household work schedule that included tasks such as:
Cooking
Cleaning
Childcare
Caring for the sick
Earning income
Household repairs
By separating tasks into âmenâs workâ and âwomenâs work,â it became clear that although the contributions of men and women are equally significant, their recognition and valuation are not equal.
Participants reflected on their own daily routines, writing down who does what and when. In the end, we calculated how many hours each person works, who gets more rest, and whose work is considered more valuableâand why.
Reflections from Participants
⨠Nishat Tasnim
She said, âThis exercise reminds us that rethinking masculinity is not only a menâs issueâit is a pathway to building a fair and balanced society.â
She realized that women often bear not just a double burden, but in many cases a triple burden. Moving forward, she wishes to ensure equal distribution of work in her personal life and continue advocacy, policy dialogue, and awareness-building in her academic and professional journey, so that care work receives due social and economic recognition.
⨠Brinty Saha
According to Brinty, household work is still taken for granted as a womanâs responsibility in our society. As a result, women return home after office only to begin a âsecond shift,â while men enjoy rest.
She committed to advocating for the idea that:
âGender roles are not defined by birth, itâs all about our societal perception.â
⨠Jhumur Sarkar
Jhumur reflected: âWomen work much harder than men. Before going out for paid work, they finish all the household chores, whereas men simply rest after outside work.â
She pledged to practice sharing responsibilities in her own life, appreciate the labor of others, and stand beside the women in her community who continue to work tirelessly despite neglect and discouragement.
⨠Neloy Das
He said, âWhether a woman is a working professional or a homemakerâher work never ends. While men usually rest after returning from the office, women remain occupied with household chores. Yet, family responsibilities belong to everyone, and it should be about equal partnership, not just âhelp.ââ
The interesting thing is that in many families, men think they are merely âhelpingââas if the main responsibility belongs to women, and men are just assisting. But a home belongs to everyone, a family belongs to everyone. So the responsibility should not be about âhelpingâ; it should be about equal partnership.â
My Reflection âī¸ (Parvez Hassan)
Facilitating this session was also a powerful learning experience for me. Through discussion and practice, I realized more deeply that:
đ Shared responsibility at home is not just a womanâs duty, but equally a manâs.
đ We can overcome gender-based inequalities in work if we value each otherâs labor and share responsibilities fairly.
đ Masculinity needs to be redefinedânot as dominance or privilege, but as cooperation, care, and commitment to justice.
My personal commitments are:
đą To ensure fair distribution of work in my own life.
đą To build awareness within my family and community that care work is valuable and deserves recognition and respect.
đą To continue advocacy and community engagement so these ideas spread further.
Conclusion
This session taught us all to think differently and more critically:
Equality in society begins at home.
Making womenâs invisible labor visible is essential.
The true strength of masculinity lies in cooperation and fairness.
Our journey has only just begun. Discussions like these will help us move towards a more just, caring, and supportive society in the days ahead.

loved this blog bhai... thanks for sharing.
Excellent work Parvez Hassan bhai! I really enjoyed this activity facilitated by Prokash Biswas Bhai. While reflecting on the 24-hour map, I realized that my husband does a lot of household work, and I had never expressed my gratitude because I assumed I was doing the majority of the work. But now I see that we both contribute almost equally at home and at the office. Immediately after this activity, I personally expressed my gratitude to him. I also realized that I, too, do a lot of invisible work that I hadnât acknowledged before.
it is a great blog, I am learning many thing Â
Thank you priya apu
