Finding Belonging Through SALT: A Story of Trust

This blog is based on a real incident that occurred during a community SALT conversation. The
experience left a deep impact not only on the community members but also on us as social
facilitators. It is often said that childhood is like soft clay in a potter’s hands its shape depends
on how it is molded. Children are the leaders of tomorrow. Therefore, it is essential to nurture
them with the right values, culture, education, and discipline from an early age. While the
family is a child’s first school, the surrounding community environment also plays a powerful
role in shaping their lives. During one of the SALT dialogue sessions, a young woman from the
community shared her life story in an unexpectedly emotional and heartfelt way. She spoke to
us as if we had known each other for years, with no hesitation or fear only trust. Her story
revealed both deep pain and remarkable strength. Now 21 years old, she had once been an
active member of a child club. However, at the tender age of 17–18, she became a victim of
child marriage. Influenced by social rumors and pressure, and without fully understanding love,
responsibility, or the long-term consequences of her decision, she was pushed into marriage.
The emotional burden of social stigma and harassment left deep scars on her life. Even after
her marriage, the negative comments and social exclusion continued. During a sensitive period
when she needed support to adjust to a new family and environment, she was separated from
her husband and family for two years. Those years were especially difficult, leading her into
depression. Sadly, many members of the community continued to view her negatively. Time
changed, infrastructure developed, and circumstances evolved but people’s attitudes toward
her remained largely the same. Yet, despite all the hardship, she did not give up on her
education. She continued her academic journey and successfully completed her higher
secondary level. Currently, her husband is working abroad, and her family’s situation is
gradually improving. The most inspiring part of her story is her resilience. No matter how many
times society tried to pull her down, she gathered her inner strength, faced each challenge
bravely, and rose again.
This experience clearly demonstrates how SALT dialogues can create a safe, trusting, and
empathetic environment within communities. When people feel heard, they find the courage to
speak. And when suppressed voices are given space, they can illuminate the path toward
change. If communities cultivate the habit of listening, many hidden stories will emerge and
those stories can become powerful catalysts for transformation.
